It's summer 2026 and I got my first PS4

Heyo,

as the title descriptively states, my brother gifted me his old PS4. I own a PS2, PS3 and some PC games from about 10 years ago, which I occasionally play with, but I'm really not in the picture anymore regarding which games might be worth my time. So I'd love to hear some suggestions

Criteria: Physical disc (I want to buy used), no PS+ requirement for the core gameplay, genre doesn't matter (co-op/splitscreen suggestions would be cool to play with my partner)

So far I know that I want to get The Last of Us II (haven't finished part one yet tho), but that's about it. I've been a big GT fan since GT4, but I'm not sure if GT7 is worth it since I don't plan to play online. Another one I'm contemplating is PC2.

Most of the content in GT7 is single player.

From what I've read on the forums, the single player experience seems to be a bit repetitive and dull. But maybe I'm getting the wrong vibes.

It pretty much follows the same format as previous games. The biggest difference is the addition of GT Café, which provides a set of menu books to play through in order to progress through the game and some rewards for collecting cars.

After you've completed the game you might find yourself repeating the same few races in order to grind for credits to collect all of the most expensive cars, but it's up to you if you want to go for the most efficient (and probably boring) way to earn credits or if you'd rather go a bit slower and do the races you enjoy instead.

One option is to create your own races with your own grid and earn credits by completing those. For example, I made a touring car race with a grid inspired by 1990's and early 2000's touring cars. It took a bit of time to create all the liveries and balance the performance, but I enjoyed every step of the process and now I basically have my own extension of the game. Once you've created a race you can use the same settings with other tracks.

What about Dirt 4, if you’re into rallying? The AI anywhere beyond the most novice spec is already at least a bit challenging to defeat for an absolute newcomer, but I find managing tarmac rally stages and controlling a 4WD car there pretty fun.

I have a few suggestions that you might enjoy.

There is ratchet and clank, which is a fun little third person shooter game. Not much more to say.

There is also Horizon Zero down. Very cool game and concept. The games happen in ~3000, and you have to fight machine (robots that look like animals/dinosaurs) with primitive weapons while you discover how the humanity got there. If you only do the story it is around 20h but there is a lot of side quests that can be done to so the game play can be really extended.

You said that you wanted something for 2 players and the first game that came to my mind was SackBoy a big adventure (spin off of little big planet) Can be played up to 4 players and is very nice to play.

Well PlayStation 1 to 3 still have the best fun factor than even PlayStation 5 and 6.

Thank you, as well! Horizon Zero Down was also recommended to me by a friend today. She also told me that the Star Wars Jedi Series is pretty good. Going to check out the other two.

Assuming you mean 4 and 5, I've really never tried the latest two Playstations apart from playing Minecraft for 15 min with my Nephew on his PS4. But I feel that's a general trend in gaming? Or I'm just being nostalgic.

If you missed it on PS3, then I recommend the Beyond: Two Souls PS4 remaster, as you can play in co-op mode (dunno how good it works, but it's in there).

Inside is a really good little indie game (get Inside & Limbo double pack if you missed Limbo on PS3).

Pick up a super cheap pre-owned copy of GT Sport before buying GT7.

Batman: Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight.

First one really makes you feel like you're the Batman. Good balance of action and exploration.

Originally a PS3 game, I think.

The last two have bigger areas to explore and more gadgets to use, but I feel they weight more on the action. But that is more due to the story.

Unfortunately I haven’t played DiRT 3 before, so I don’t know the answer to that question. In fact, beyond GT Sport, the only PS4 games of which I have really explored the gameplay is Sackboy: A Big Adventure (mentioned above) and DiRT 4 (less time spent playing than Sackboy; didn’t really progress into the Welsh mud rally stages, much less snow ones).

Regarding Sackboy, it’s a fun game, but not as imaginative as LittleBigPlanet 1 & 2. IMO you don’t get that aura of fuzzy warmth you do in LBP 1 & 2’s local multiplayer while playing Sackboy, and there’re less possibilities for light-hearted shenanigans in Sackboy too. Don’t get me wrong, though; there’s still plenty of fun to have in Sackboy (from funny mischief to actual gameplay), and if I have to rate the 5 console games featuring Sackboy, this newest game ranks in the exact middle, higher than 3 & Karting, so if you or your S/O like the first 2 installments very much then I think you will be pleased to know the newest one follows more in their footsteps (but with better colours etc.) and will enjoy playing it.

Edit: Oh yeah, the core gameplay content of Sackboy is shorter than LBP 1 & maybe 2, since I’m retrieving the cookie crumbs in my sea of memory, but that’s kinda expected anyway, since OG LBP has got those user-generated levels and the DLC that tie in with Toy Story & Metal Gear Solid, whereas the best Sackboy got was just costumes.

I have Red Dead Redemption 2 on disc for PS4?
For racing games, Grid Legends is about to be delisted but has a lot of single player content. As do The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest.
