I just got a "Free" Ipod Nano 4gb (got one when i bought something else..) which is the only reason i have it, since id never buy one. Btw i dont own any other mp3 players, my PS3 + computer does the job. Anyway as usual i have to use itunes and of course it doesnt regonize the names of the songs i have... I want the list to be ordered by filename, is that possible or just wishful thinking because atm the list is in no proper order.

I think i'll just give the ipod to my mum...

Nope. iTunes throws everything you add to it into a database then it sorts it alphabetically, file names are completely useless to iTunes, All it cares for is Artist/Album/Song, and will usually organize imported music into folders that way.

I got some fundamental questions cause I'm not sure...

1. If I buy songs through iTunes what format are they in?

2. Can said purchased songs be played in Windows Media Player?

3. Can they be added to other devices like my Creative MP3 player and Sony Ericsson phone?

Why the hell would you want to do that?

TAG YOUR MUSIC!

(if you're truly stubborn, get a batch tag editor and tell it to add the filenames to the description or comment field of the tag, then sort by that)

iTunes songs are "Protected AAC audio files". You can burn up to 7 copies of each song/album on to CD (legally) and listen to them on up to 5 different computers/devices (which you 'authorise' when you attempt to play them).

Unfortunately, I don't think they will work on a non-iPod player in their present format. I downloaded a new album just last week and the files appear as 'Unsupported Data' on my PS3 :grumpy: Whether they will work on an authorised PC but using a different media player (like Winamp/WMP), I'm not sure but I'd be surprised if they did.

Don't you guys find it ridiculous that you can't do anything you want with the purchase you made? You should be able to download it, make as many copies you'd like and play it on as many devices you like, like when you purchase anything else in this world. DRM is so damn frustrating. It's slowly going the way of the do-do, but I still don't know why people still put up with it.

If you go to the iTunes store and there’s a big “+” symbol next to the price, that means the track is DRM-free, and you’re allowed to do whatever with it. If not, that means the music label is forcing Apple to keep the DRM.

^It's why I don't buy anything from iTunes...

Far be it from me to pass up a chance to criticize apple, but this actually doesn't matter much. You burn the song to CD (which you were going to do anyway) and then rip it right back in mp3 format. You don't have to take the disc out of the drive, and itunes will do the whole job by itself. Doesn't take long.

That would be illegal, however... intentionally circumnavigating DRM (and even ripping a CD) is still illegal, however much it shouldn't be. I'd like to meet the genius who devised DRM and congratulate him on his remarkable idea. Any idea that actively punishes honest music buyers has to be a good thing, right?

Yeah from TM's answering of my questions its put me right off. I wouldn't have minded paying for the tracks because I know they would be good quality, but the fact that they have this protection on them and you are limited in how you can play them it has really put me off. No wonder people use P2P if it is going to be this much hassle, and this limiting, when paying for them legit.

lol, ur a criminal. :p

I heard that before. Yeah, no thanks.

Forgot to ask also, does anyone know anything similar to iTunes that does not have the same restrictions on the file?

your local record store, perhaps

(edit: not meant to be supremely sarcastic or anything)

Not helpful for single tracks tho. Thats the main reason I was pondering iTunes, dont want to have to buy a whole album just for one song.

When you download the winamp client you can get 50 songs from eMusic for free. I don't think it has any restrictions to what you can do with it but it's mostly indie bands stuff.

Has that been tested in court or is it just declared against the rules by the retailer?

Use a program like id3tagit to redo all the tags for the album and artist. From there, iTunes will default the id3 song title as the file name, if I recall correctly.

Yes, iTunes is a pain for not allowing folder/filename sorting. One of my many complaints against it. But alas, I must use it since I have a touch.

And I could rant days on DRM as well... but that topic has been beat to death. I'll just state I don't buy music from iTunes.

Err, quick question.... does iTunes somehow know what you're browsing in Firefox?

I went to the iTunes store shortly after making this post, and searched for a Zappa song. But underneath, in the general recommendations, there's a link for Umphrey's McGee's podcast... now, I've never heard of Umphrey's McGee before in my puff, but magically it turns up 'randomly' on my iTunes recommendations list? Bizarre coincidence, or is iTunes sneakier than I thought??

edit: It seems it is just a bizarre coincidence - apparently they are heavily influenced by Frank Zappa... :boggled:
