Wow, it's been a long time since I've been here. Life's been busy and I havn't drifted GT3 in quite some time. In celebration of my return (for those of you who actually remember me) I made a video of my drifting as it is coming back into the game after so long....but sorry, it's not a fancy video. :scared:

I'm drifting what has become one of my favorite cars to drift. Almost a perfect balance. The car just likes to rotate smoothly once it starts to drift. Example, on the long medium turn in the back of the track, if you look at my steering control, I go all the way around the turn and other then setting in and out of the turn, I never had to touch the steering wheel. This is the longest turn on the course.

I think the Subaru is a fairly unique choice in drifting too, at least on GT3 as I've only seen it in one other video and it was only used temporarily because someone made an Initial D tribute video.

Either way, I've babbled on long enough, time for the vid.

Let me know what you think of my newly re-awaken drifting.

EDIT: I appoligize for the weird camera shaking focus thing, my camera just refused to focus in properly and I don't have my vid capture card hooked up right now so this was the only option.

Welcome back...

My vid, "Countersteer Zero" has a number of different Subaru's... 23 or 24 AWD's total...

Downloading now...

Nice video, iammike. Quality is a bit lower than expected, but sill. Good Job.

Delphic Reason: That video of yours is really awesome.

Yeah, quality was low cause that was an extremely quick throw together, recorded it with my Sony digi cam, transfered to my computer, compressed from 112MB to ~4MB and uploaded it.

I need to get my vid capture card up and running again to really bother with making anything better.

@D Reason: Great video man, incredibly smooth drifts. Somebody likes their Subaru's. :)

that ok as long as you show us what you got, no matter how the video quality is ,by the way nice drifting with the Impreza dude, keep up the good work.

hey, good stuff, enjoyed watching it. And the quality wasnt too bad, considering.

My only suggestion is in regards to your line.
I thought it was great around the majority of the track, but turn 1+2 could have been pulled off a bit better IMO.

It's clear that you have the ability to hold a long smooth drift (loved turn 8 btw, thats how it should be done!), so why not cut an early apex on turn 1 with the back end kicked, hold a wide line with huge angle into turn 2, then pull the drift back down to the apex, and exit turn 2 wide. Make 1+2 into a single, dual apex corner.

it looks like you did attempt to do this, then just lost the drift angle by either countersteering too much (there was 1 little flick i noticed, and you lost the drift only a second later), or not getting on the gas soon enough after the first drift was induced.
From what i could see, if you had pinned the gas as soon as the tail stepped out, and avoided that flick to the right you could have held a good looking drift through both. Getting on the gas as soon as you got sliding would have allowed you to take a wider line with massive angle into 2, and you wouldnt have had to countersteer, get off the gas, and brake to avoid a rub on the inside of turn 2 as you did.

When i drift those two turns in either FR or AWD, i dont get off the gas once i got the thing sideways until I'm exiting turn 2 and have to check up a bit to keep myself out of the grass so i can get a decent entry into turn 3.

Then, if you want, its not too much of a stretch to link the first 6 or even 8 turns (if the car has the gusto to get from 7 to 8 in a drift, that is).
Linking the first 6 or 7 shouldnt be beyond you.

hrm, maybe i overcooked that a bit. A little lengthy when i look back on it.
Great video, though, enjoyed it, mainly just those first 2 turns to work on imo. 👍

nice drift video...it made me go dust off my ps2 and starting playing again..i really liked it.

let me ask you guys something.....when you make a drift video like that, does it take lots of tries just to get it right?? or are you guys just like "oh well let, me go make a drift video before i have supper"

to do a full lap like that, it takes a little time. Speaking for myself, it takes me quite awhile before i start liking whats going on with my drifting.
Granted i dont release videos (i have no capacity to, but hopefully ill get some X-mas money to buy a ATI-TV-Wonder-Pro!!!), but i do save replays with the intention of releasing them when i get a capture card

Each car responds to each course a little differently because of their weight, power, center of gravity, etc etc, and of course, the settings applied to it. So naturally, after I decide on a car and venue to do my drifting, i end up doing a lot of minor tweaking to both the car settings, and my driving style and line.

have a look at some of the challenge videos. The contestants are given 2 weeks to release those. Its not a 10 minute job.
Of course, some people will be more adept at this process than others. But speaking for myself again, if i'm working on a new car where I havent made a setup for it before, I probably do in the area of 50-70 laps before I think I'm doing anything worth keeping. For those laps Im playing with settings and different lines and aquainting (or reaquainting) myself with whatever car im using. That may just be me though, and I'm a little anal and compulsive.
Naturally, for a car-course combination I'm familiar with (ie, S15 and Apricot Hill), the process is much faster. But there's always room to improve and try new things.

now that was for a full-lap.
if you're just dong a clip video, i imagine the job is much quicker. I wont say its easy, but its easier to do 5 laps here and there and save a clip of 1 corner where you did a decent job.
On the other hand, much more time is spent on the computer doing the editing, on these videos.
(then again, I havent done any videos, so take my comments with that in mind)

It looks like you're doing OK... However, you need to work on your control... You don't need as much countersteer as you were using... Yet, if you do use countersteer, it needs to be implemented precisely, making small fluid adjustments...

Stop by IDM... We have 3 AWD excersises (thus far) and I think they could really help you...

http://lsdrift.com/iboard/index.php?showtopic=307 (first 2 excersises)

http://lsdrift.com/iboard/index.php?showtopic=371 (current running excersise)

Keep up the practice.. You're on the right track...

BTW, good advise TankSpanker...

;)

TankSpanker: Honestly, turns 1 and 2 were a complete screw up on my part but I've never cared if I showed my falls as much as I show my skills so I just went ahead and used it. haha I used to be better then this but when you walk away from the PS2 for about 3 or 4 months then come back, it take some time, that vid was after about 2 or 3 hours of reaquanting (god that spelling looks hacked) myself with the tracks and the car.

Everyone else, thanks for the good words, makes me feel like staying in it and getting at least back to my former level.

D Reason: I'll look into those 3 excersises and see what's up. I've still got a lot to learn I think when it comes to AWD drifting as the majority of my past drifting was always done in a Black MR2.

hey, no probs, just trying to pass on a helpful word :)

and that spelling is hacked. Its 'reaquainting', with an 'i'

is it me...or do any of you notice that when you dift with AWD the car tends to slide off the road...its like the road isn't wide enough....could this be because i should use the e-brake to get the back swinging??

Im thinking that its the speed or the line that ur entering.

i agree wit NK4E. if ur entering at a higher speed, then it seems like u drift n a straight line n thus, ram into the wall (ive learnt from many experiences hahaha) so yeah i usually try n enter a bit slower than normal n then just wish for the best line hahahaa

I agree with the other guys, just keep practicing. Eventually you'll find yourself compensating for things like that without even thinking about it. I got on SS11 last night for the first time in a long long time and managed to go a full lap without touching a single wall on only the second lap. I did go into one turn to fast and the very thing you speak of happened to me....but eventually you'll pick up on how to correct for it and continue the drift. It helps to have a very well balanced car that almost drifts for itself.

If I get around to it tonight, I've actually got a vid of the lap I'm speaking of so you can see what I'm talking about.

EDIT, speaking of the video, here it is. http://members.cox.net/claus_valca/ss11.wmv

If you look at turn #4 (the first hard 90 degree right hander) you'll see that I enter way to fast and I have to scrub speed off.

awesome vid there....makes me want to go play now...and thanks for the little tips everyone
I think i got it, i was drifting with my ghost (yea i had my ghost on), and there was this lap when we were side by side drifting the whole time....it was wicked. i did it just the way the Japanese do with them orange cars. at one point we came this close >< but we didn't touch......
i have a somewhat dumb question....how do you guys make videos???

lol u mean the D1 racers....i love the D1, too bad i cant watch it in australia

yeah about the ghosts, i really cant drift wit them. they make me lose my rhythm or sometimes follow the line that i did on the previous lap where i might hav hit the wall or somethin so then i do the exact same thing ago. its probally cos im too unco to pick a better line hehehehe but yeah that was a good lap on SS11. makes me wanna get the camera out n record some laps on laguna wit my S.S hachi roku

Lol nice I like how you had the GT3 song on and the shaking lol real porfessional. Joking! Pretty nice I wasn't here when you were and welcome you back I respect you as drifters as they should be. Because I can't drift :dopey:
