Jackie Stewart calls for Mosley to resign

Sir Jackie Stewart has called on Max Mosley to resign, following what he calls 'detrimental' decisions by the FIA President.

According to Stewart, Mosley is responsible for many of the scandals that have marred Formula One this season as he launched his personal crusade against McLaren and its team boss Ron Dennis.

Starting with Stepneygate and ending with last week's decision to send a special scrutineer to the Brazilian GP to watch over McLaren's treatment of Fernando Alonso, Stewart says Mosley has been shooting F1 in the foot with a 'semi-automatic rifle'.

And the triple World Champion believes it's now time for Mosley to step down from his job.

Negativity

"There is an escalating awareness that Mosley is being called into question over the proper governance of the FIA and his authority is being undermined, to an increasing degree, largely because we are in the most exciting F1 campaign there has been for years, and yet the papers are full of negative publicity," Stewart told the Scottish Herald.

"As far as I am concerned, it looks as if we are shooting ourselves in both feet, not with a pistol, but with a semi-automatic rifle, and the governing body is damaging the reputation of the whole sport and bringing it into disrepute.

"They are acting in self-interest and I believe there has to be greater accountability. Perhaps Max Mosley has been in the job too long. I definitely think that he should consider his position and that a new president should be head-hunted from outside the sport, so there is no conflict of interest.

"This has nothing to do with me and Max - nor am I acting in any way, shape or form, on behalf of the McLaren team - but I honestly think that decisions are being made which are detrimental to our business and we have to accept that it is time for a change."

So it's not just because Mosley called Stewart a 'halfwit' just the other week then?
 
He did? Big mistake!

Max Mosley may have had some radical suggestions (He campaigned for the Rally 3000 regulations, or whatever its name was), but all this in F1?

And, what would it turn out to be if the person being head-hunted for the job did not have enough skill to attain competence as the president of the organization?

Jackie Stewart is an eloquent man; I liked how he used the term, 'semi-automatic rifle', but this seems to be a very radical step, seeing that no immediate predecessor is in sight.

That guy just reeks of awesome. And really, he's only said what I'd estimate 90% of the dedicated F1 viewership is thinking - but with the typical Jackie Stewart panache.

Even putting aside the recent McLaren 'witch hunt', there's still years of pro-Bridgestone and pro-Ferrari treatment to look at.

Then there's also the constant rule changes (I believe some which were actually outside his authority to change) routinely dumped on teams with little notice that supposedly make the sport 'more economically feasible' to low budget teams.... seems to me that if a consistent set of regulations were kept for more than two or three races then the teams on the cusp of bankruptcy might stand a better chance of surviving by not having to spend design and R&D dollars on new parts to stay legal within the sport. End result is that the backfield teams are more unstable than ever.

I commend Mosley for the level of safety he's brought into F1 (same may certainly be said of Jackie Stewart), and for his role in the whole FISA/FOCA thing of the 1980's. But I do agree with Jackie Stewart; Mosley has overstayed his welcome.

I see the political side of F1 being quite interesting over the next few months, particularly as the current Concorde agreement comes to an end.
 
Round 2 begin, Mosley hits back

Max Mosley has reacted to Sir Jackie Stewart's criticism of the FIA, its president saying that Formula One's governing body does not exist to win popularity contests.

Stewart slammed the FIA earlier this week in the wake of the decision to send a special scrutineer to the Brazilian Grand Prix to watch over McLaren-Mercedes and ensure that team-mates and championship rivals Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton receive equal treatment.

The three-times former world champion accused the FIA of "damaging the reputation of the whole sport and bringing it into disrepute".

Stewart also called for Mosley to consider his position, saying that perhaps he "has been in the job too long".

Fairness

However, Mosley has now hit back at Stewart, defending the FIA's decision in the name of fairness.

"Jackie Stewart's latest comments are as misconceived as those he made prior to the McLaren World Council hearing in September," he told Autosport.

"During a highly charged and controversial season it is of course understandable that many in the United Kingdom feel great sympathy for the plight of McLaren and Lewis Hamilton.

"In the same way it is understandable for many on the continent to feel great sympathy for the plight of double world champion Fernando Alonso.

"However, it is not the role of the FIA to court popularity by supporting one party or the other.

"It is the role of the FIA to ensure that the rules of the sport are respected and that fairness is applied consistently for all competitors."

I presume it's also the role of the FIA to promote the sport in a positive light. :rolleyes:
