This is the car in question... A 2003 4.2 with ~50k miles. I was wondering if any of you have any experience with the face lifted S-Types? (Or S-Types in general) Sorry if I'm being really vague but I've only looked at it once and it was not for long because it was cold out.

As I like to say: If you're getting a Jag, better get two so you can drive one while the other is in the shop.

They're pretty unreliable to be honest.:indiff:

Have you any personal experience with them? If maintenance is kept up is it still quite bad? I guess buying a Jag is a gamble. Either nothing will ever go wrong or your car will be lemon-ish.

My mom would most likely be keeping her Outback for winter driving but I don't want to put her through many problems.

You'd be better off with its Lincoln brother. At the very least, if something goes wrong with the Lincoln it would very likely be cheaper to fix.

During the era of the S- & X-Type, maybe. Jaguar is now offering a pretty well covered warranty for their cars.

The S-Type isn't noticeably more unreliable than average and though it does have underpinnings which are, to some extent, shared with the Lincoln LS, so does the Jaguar XF which succeeded it.

The most unreliable model is the S-Type R, which eats gearboxes. Since you're looking at the 4.2 and not the R, not an issue.

And yes - though I haven't owned an S-Type, I have experience of a 3.0 V6 and an R.

My stepdad used to own an S type which was generally quite reliable, I think it was pre-face lift but I'm not sure as my memory fails me, the problem wasn't it going wrong often but more the bill when it did go wrong being far from cheap.

Indeed - that's a Jaguar thing. My dad need to replace the wing mirror on his XJ 3.2 Sport - £555.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking about trying to get an extended test drive or maybe a return policy (many places up here offer like 30-60 returns).

Have always had jags and have never had any problems, currently have a 3L V6 S-Type, il's a wonderfull car, I strongly recomend them.
