Heres the link to the website that explains what goes on if you've never heard of it before.

Cars in general section ;)

Oh, and... I'm going to want to see some pics :)

Thanks, moved to the right place now. My friend who I will be going with usualy brings his camera so after the 12th of may and once he uploads the pics he will most likely take i'll post them up here.

Who named this? Did they not know the term Japanese is offensive?

Really? we're going to go down that route when we're talking about something that's been around for near enough a decade now?

Sorry if you find it offensive haitch40 :(, but nothing I can do it about it. Japfest is the offical name of the event and with this year being their 10th anniversary I assume they've had the same name for all 10 years. This is'nt the only car event in the UK that uses the word "Japanese" there is also Japshow http://www.japshow.co.uk/index.html

The term "Japanese" is commonly used by Japanese car enthusiasts and is not ment to cause offence.

Yes I am going to rage. :p

I myself am not offended but I just wondered why they called it that as the term came from the war.

Anyway I love Japanese cars so get some pictures people.

I did find it a bit of a strange choice at first but I presume it's just accepted as the events name now.

I'd like to see some pictures too :p

I was going to go with the Yaris Club but they have already sorted the tickets. I did go in 2006 though when some guy stacked his GTO into the tires while trying to drift

When you are talking about "Japanesefest", yes, definitely expect to raise eyebrows with some people. It is a derogatory term, and that's been established for a couple more years longer than a decade.

While I'm not going to take it to heart if someone call me a Japanese, trust me, I will take note. ;)

Sorry, I understand the point you're making and do agree it's a stupid choice of name.

The point I was making though wasn't supposed to be agreeable with the naming, it was more along the lines of 'haven't we heard this conversation before?'.

I say again, I'm sorry if the name of this event causes you offence. It's the offical name of the event, and many other car clubs and events, even teams use the term "Japanese" in the UK.

I guess it could be blaimed on what is acceptable in different cultures, i'm not saying the term "Japanese" should be acceptable when refering to a person, but when refering to Japanese cars the term is commonly accepted in the UK as just an abbreviation of "Japanese" just the same way as European cars being abbreviated to "Euro cars".

Anyway hopefully after May 12th the disscusion will focus on the pictures of the cars at this event insted of the term used to describe them.

I went last year, it was okaay i dont really like static meets. Got bored after a few hours and went Santa Pod :D

Static?, do they not hold it at Castle Combe anymore?, anyway.. it's been ages since iv'e last been (remember seeing an MX5 spanking Skylines, Evo's and Subaru's around that track), haven't been to the Pod in years either.
Gone are the good-old days of JAE at Billing Aquadrome... and yes i know it was static, anyway.. looking forward to the pics.

And yes, they do really need to change that name from Japfest, never have liked the term Japanese and will never use it (well, apart from just having written it there).

Yes they still hold it at Castle Combe race track, I wasnt sure what Slick Rick ment by "static meet", but they allow track time as long as your car meets the regulations and they usually have a drift display / demo performed by Team Japspeed (Uh Oh theres that term again :indiff:) Last time I went they had a few Team Halfords BTTC Civics on track blasting around only to be upstaged buy an unknown guy in a GC8 Impreza blast past them all

This is how I interpret it, but there again i'm not Japanese or part Japanese so it's not really for me to judge. I read it as an abbreviation of something like "Japanese Car Festival" and in no way suggesting people should use the term "Japanese" to refer to other people. Then again, they could've just called it something else that wouldn't potentially cause offence at all :)

No apology necessary, and the point I am making is, this would & should come up every time. Again, regardless of what the naming is trying to achieve, it is derogatory, and it is controversial, at least where I'm from(Japan & U.S.).

Personally, I expect people to stop bringing this subject up when the term "Japanese" change meaning, or the show change its' naming. Many people are OK with it, apparently. But there are also those of us who are still caught up with such naming, and that's just the way it is. :dopey:

I'm from the UK and the term is controversial there too. Still, not having a go at the OP. It isn't his fault that the show has such a derogatory name.

It's a ridiculous name and the fact it hasn't ever been changed speaks volumes about the 'Max Power generation' of England.

So are we gonna discuss the show or the title of the show?
Like I said, goes with the territory. They chose the offensive name, you can't just go for the shock factor, and complain when people pitch crap about it. I will be moving on as long as I don't draw anymore comments or questions about it. I joined the discussion only because haitch40 was questioned for what I found to be such a sensible post.

And in regards to the OP, like F1 fan, on the record, I also like to say that I have nothing against this thread, thread title, or the OP. It's not like he came up with the name!

lol whutt.

The event is in the Netherlands too, with the same name. Never raised an eyebrow. 'A Japanese' is used by everyone here refering to something that's Japanese.. Nothing wrong with it.

Back on track...

I used to be a marshall at Combe when I used to live in the UK, Japfest was a really busy day (and busy for us lol)
You get to see a some silly quick cars, the Norris Evo is normally flying about.
Well worth a look, even if you are not into the Japanese car scene (I am a VeeDubber) but its worth it to watch the action on track (normally FTO's falling of the track)

Fine, but 'Japanese' is traditionally a derogatory term in the UK, a remnant from WWII. It's just an unimaginative and boorish name to attach to a car show, in my opinion. Also, we're not talking about a show in the Netherlands here.

Small world. Having grown up a stone's throw from Castle Combe and having my family home in the same village as Simon Norris', I can vouch for how quick his Evos are (when they don't blow up)...

I have never been to said festival before but I designed a couple of liveries for tuner cars that went to the event a number of years ago.

haha, I haven't seen a Norris evo in years, I see they still blow up all the time then? :sly:

Ah yes Rue, the Norris SWB (Bogie), speaking of the Norris Evo.. didn't Top Gear blow up 1 of his cars too? (years ago i think) and refuse to pay for the damage caused?, or was it just a rumor?
