Hello, GTPlanet.

Allow me to try something different. I am John M. of Houston, Texas, USA. This is an unofficial report of the Houston Auto Show running April 2nd to the 11th. Join me in my adventures (and misadventures). Don't expect any pictures, though.

Okay, here goes. This is going to be a big introduction. Try to keep up.

CHEVROLET
Entering at the GMC center, I quickly grabbed a bag (I needed one, especially one that could carry a lot of stuff). I moved on to Chevrolet and began my own personal tour of the Houston Auto Show at Chevrolet. The only car I seemed to like at the show from Chevy was the Corvette. And I'm talking about the C5. For a guy who doesn't have a license, almost any Corvette would be too much for me. The Aveo was told to be "surprisingly roomy." Well, I was sadly fooled. I was slightly comfortable in it. I don't know what audience it was looking for, but it certainly wasn't for skinny 6-feet tall dudes like me. Later on in my unofficial report, I'll refer to my height again with a weird story.

PONTIAC
Pontiac would be the one to have the return of the GTO, based on the Holden Monaro. I had a chance to check out the Vibe. I didn't feel any mad vibes in my soul. It's an alright car. Chrome gauges and a look that would be a little too much for me and my personality. When I thought a GTO was available to climb into on the showroom floor, it was a new Bonneville. The good thing is that all the lines have been minimalized wonderfully from the last model.

DODGE
Dodge was about the best American car company I came across at the show. I had a chance to finally climb into the Neon SRT-4. And when I jumped in, I could feel the boy racer charm flow through my body. It's a spitfire of a car. 200+ horses with turbo, an aggressive front, functional hood, and a tall rear spoiler. What youngster wouldn't be turned on by a sporty car? From little and sporty to big and American- Dodge Ram. And yes, it had a Hemi under the hood. If I bought an American truck, I'd go with the Ram or maybe the updated Dakota. The Durango is cool, but it's not me. Earlier, I mentioned my height of 6 feet even. I had a chance to walk inside the big empty space in the Dodge Sprinter utility van. I had my doubts, but surprisingly, I could walk from from the front of the van to the back of it without having to duck my head. Then this 6'2" or 6'4" dude came in and ducked his head. I was like... man. I'm tall, but... damn, man.

LEXUS
Now from pure American car companies to an American luxury division of a Japanese auto manufacturer. The SC430 caught my eyes. It was such a beautiful machine which is the Toyota Soarer in Japan. Thing is, I think the car sells for $67,000+ if you want to have it as a daily driver or a weekend machine. There was the HPS Concept that had nice lines to it for an SUV. I didn't know which Lexus had an aerodynamic undertray as shown in a commercial. I seen the Team Lexus #0 that won the 2002 Grand-Am Cup Team and Driver Champions. I don't know who the racer was, but he gave me a poster of one of the Team Lexus race cars from Grand-Am Cup and autographed it. I, of course, wished for future success for the team.

MERCEDES-BENZ
Now it's on to Benz. I had a chance to sit in some Benz machines and learn to love just why they are so luxurious and capable. I loved the little telephone and navigation packages. The boxy, recently released Mercedes-Benz G55 SUV was basically a Dakar car for the street. When I talked to a Mercedes-Benz of Houston associate, he said that the truck would have been better if it had an air suspension. There was a competition coupe there as well, a C-Class Sport Coupe competition coupe.

VOLVO
I didn't get in one, but I seen the S60 up close. To me, the car was low as a race car. I almost second-guessed Volvo's commitment to safety with the racy machine. After a quick stop, I moved on.

MAZDA
Zoom-zoom. It's time to get your Zoom on with Mazda. The part-owned-by-Ford company Mazda had some nice rotary cars. My favorite was the Mazda 3, especially the 5-door. The 6 was still a nice machine. And the Miatas and RX-8s were out in full force. There were also the Mazda trucks, the B-Series and Tribute.

JAGUAR
I was in love. Jaguar S-type, Jaguar X-Type, and even the Jaguar XKR were for "come on in" pleasure. Surely, I got my fix. The X-Type seemed to be pretty plain with the dash, but the Jaguar charm was still there. The S-Type has elegant charm, and its dashboard does not disappoint. The XKR is the closest you'll come to an Aston Martin, but for much less. The XKR is raced in Trans-Am and can be driven in Gran Turismos 2 and 3. If I pictured myself driving in it, I'd feel younger than I ever felt. On exhibit was the S-Type R. And as I told someone. How do you make a Jaguar better? My answer: "add an 'R.'"

INFINITI
Nissan's luxury namesake for America. I got into the G35, and I was impressed with the level of comfort and elegance. A car I thought was the Gloria Gran Turismo for America is actually the Nissan Cedric for America. Don't know what the Infiniti name is, but it is interesting to see this car for sale in America. I wanted to see the FX45, but didn't get a chance.

SUBARU
Time to get your rally on, GTPlanet. The Subaru section offered its Mustang Slayer, the WRX STi. I got into the 300hp Impreza WRX STi, and I could imagine myself being Colin McRae (before jumpshifting to Ford) or Richard Burns. I seen myself in a Baja as well. But, I don't think the machine carries my character very well. There was a new-school Legacy sedan there as well. I loved it! It was elegant, and like all street Subarus, they were all-wheel drive.

HYUNDAI
Tiburon in Spanish means "shark." So when I got into the machine, I could see myself going up and down I-45 and Loop 610 here in Houston. The cool factor was there, but not really me. It was the only car I came for at the section.

NISSAN
I am not a serious Nissan fan. I think some of their cars are a little too plain for my tastes. That still doesn't mean that I can check out some of the cars. I have a confession to make. I take back the 350Z. The car is comfortable to sit in, and with all the stuff in front of you and to your right, it is very sporty. I loved it, looking at little kids wanting to get in the passenger seat and this one cutie (around my age) who also liked it. The newer Maxima is 260+ hp and rear-wheel drive. And this car was enticing and sweet. It was like candy, and I was a sweettooth for its appeal. The Altima is a hot car on the outside, but it's a little plain at the wheel. I also strapped into the badass Titan. It was bulky and muscular and was pretty cool.

HONDA
More than 60 years, and Honda continues to innovate in the automobile market, as well as in many other markets it participates in. Normally, when a person thinks of Honda, the first that comes to mind is the Civic. In fact, people who poke fun at Japanese cars like to think all the sporty cars are bascially slow Honda Civics. While I'm not going to start any flaming on the make, let's get to my experience. I got into the Element, and I thought the car was pretty cool for a machine that doesn't have any carpet. I felt my sneakers kind of grip to the floor of the car, like I was on the basketball court or a clay tennis field. An interesting thing about the car is that you can't see the transmission on the floor. The Honda Accord (2-door) had pretty big gauges and easy-to-read lettering. It's charm on the outside carried into the inside pretty well. I sampled the Insight, and the car was plain and only carried two people. The Honda Civic is the number one tuner car of choice in America. I got into the new Civic Si, and I could see why the car is so hot. The Si had a nice rally-style shifter on the dashboard. Such a fun factor. "John, did you get into the S2000?" I saved the best for last. The S2000 at the show was the newer model of it. It is so sporty with 240hp. I can see why the car is so fun even though tuners seem to like using the tail lights for their tuner Hondas.

TOYOTA
Now on to my personal favorite Japanese car company. The Celica was as racy as I thought it was. I liked it pretty much. The second-generation Prius had nice lines and exciting features. Had some fun girls join me with their dad in the car. Then I seen the MR-S. I thought it was more of a Ferrari with the MR2, but this one is more of a Porsche. I think the newer Echo looks better, but still a tad ugly. I think if they brought the hatchback Echo, it would sell better. Also, the new Solara was there. I like the car's styling except for the rear lights.

AUDI
Another German car company now. This one the brainchildren of the Audi R8 (somebody PLEASE beat them at Le Mans or ALMS!). The Audi TT roadster was my favorite car there. It was fun and cool. Then some dude came by and said that I looked good in the yellow roadster I was in. But, I guess I bought his claim.

VOLKSWAGEN
I enjoyed getting into the New Beetle. My only concern was the cramped space in the convertible at the driver seat. I couldn't adjust the seat for my skinny and tall self was having trouble stretching my legs in it. I said to myself about the VW Golf R32 "I wonder if Japanese car faithfuls will accept the name 'R32' on a VW Golf..." This was the weirdest moment for me. Someone said that "I was a lucky man." And then this guy told his girlfriend to take a picture of me, and so I did. I raised up the Peace symbol with my fingers and shown off my dorky impression of feeling very proud to be in the car. Ahh, it's good being dorky sometimes.

Well, this is only 1/2 of my experience. More to come in future posts including BMW, Mini, Acura, Scion, Maybach, Lotus, Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, the Mustang 40th Anniversary exhibit, my first Aston Martin I seen upclose, Saleen, and an Italian car in red that WASN'T a Ferrari. More to come, folks!

I'm going tomorrow and I'll be taking lots of pictures. The people doing the Lotus exhibit are 5 Star Motorcars. I used to work there :P. Pretty cool people. They also have an Aston dealership.

Hey, nice thread you got going. Hopefully Shob will put up some pics for us soon. ;)

You didn't happen to see an SLK at the Mercedes exhibit did you, John? I really like the new one they've come out with.

Awesome write-up.👍

Would be better with pictures, though.:p

I'm working on the rest of my experience at the Auto Show, but as a quick reply, I seen the SLK at the show. I think I even got into one, but the newer model, no. I like the newer model, especially based on the beautiful Mercedes/McLaren supercar of late.

If that's your opinion, then maybe you should learn to read. However, if it's really too difficult for you then I'm sure JohnBM01 would send you the simplified 'big print' version if you asked nicely.

Sorry guys, a LOT of my pictures are just horrible. My pictures are around 600-700 kb. Does anyone have a place that I can upload them? I'd be glad to show several that are nice.

In May I'm off to the NEC International, I'll get aload of pics from for you all and post them here.

Allow me to continue my unofficial Houston Auto Show report. But first, here is a bit of information I did not include in my last post:

VOLKSWAGEN
The Phaeton V12 was at the show for viewing pleasure. With a high price tag, it's looks are very impressive. I was thinking that the W12 would be its own supercar, but the horsepower for the Phaeton with the W12 motor were impressive. In fact, one would hardly fathom it's a Volkswagen.

Okay, let's continue.

BMW
Now on to BMW. I got into the newer M3. I mean, I didn't know if I was in a luxury car or in a pure sportscar. BMW always seems to manage both sides so well. And like M-Spec would say, "look fast, stay stock" or something like that. I didn't get to get into the X5 or new X3, but I'm sure they would be as luxurious and active.

MINI
Someone out there please thank John Cooper for making such a fun car. I got into not one, but three different Minis. One in blue with checkered livery on the white parts, a Cooper S in red, and a Cooper S in British Racing Green. Being in one is something to behold. It is a wonderful experience. I can only imagine what driving one would be like. I'd feel younger than when Gran Turismo 4 comes out.

ACURA
I didn't get to get into the NSX because it was closed off. I did take a picture from the front and the back of the supercar. I got into the RSX and the tuner culture love the RSX. But to be honest, I didn't really feel moved by it. The RSX doesn't really maintain have the character of the Integra of the past. I got into one, and almost another.

KIA
I have to be honest. When I seen the blue Kia Rio in "Sports Car Revolution" on the Speed Channel, I didn't know about the car's size. But when I got into a sedan version, I soon realized that the car IS a hatchback on the show. Point proven, and that's all I needed to know from Korean make Kia.

PORSCHE
Porsche, the most realiable choice for a GT Race Car. I got a chance to get into the Porsche Cayenne. Now, I can see myself in a big-powered Dodge Ram, but the Cayenne is a monster. It has 450hp, turbocharged motor, and I can imagine taking this around town (granted I get a license). But as I been hearing, the car been recalled so much for overheated brakes or something. What a beast. I wanted to get into the Porsche Boxster, but I was hoping to get into a Carrera. There was even a Porsche Driving Experience 911 on display. The Boxster S was its own exhibit.

MAYBACH
Maybach showed off one of its cars. I can't remember the name of it. I've never heard of it, but it must be very luxurious. But from an angle, you can't really get into it just by watching on the side.

MASERATI
Maserati was interesting to take a look at. I seen a Maserati called the Quattropointe, I think it's called. Then I had a chance to talk with Ferrari and Maserati of Houston. At first, the person I talked to kind of taught me something. I think I remember him saying that Risi Competizione is based here in Houston. I don't know if that is true or not, but I do remember seeing a Ferrari of Houston Ferrari Challenge car next door to Davy Jones KartZone. Maserati has a nice, blue GT car from the Rolex 24 of this year. I even told the person about the MC12 from the Geneva Auto Show priced at $735,000. I didn't know much about the make, but Maserati has some nice machines.

FERRARI
The prancing horses in red. The most dominant team in Formula One. Makers of the most beautiful sportscar of the 1990s, the 333SP. I would come across the 575 Maranello (?) and the sweet Scaglietti. Now, I base my report based on cars in that certain location, but later in my tour, I seen two 360 Modenas. One in street trim, the other as a Ferrari Challenge race car. Could I get into any of them? Too good to be true. You can't get into every car. The ones too good to be true aren't touched by anyone or have locked doors.

ASTON MARTIN
Aston Martin is one of my favorite car companies when it comes to luxury at a price. I seen my first AM. It was a DB7 Volante droptop in blue. Since racing them in Gran Turismo 1, I see one up close. And I loved it. I'd die young just to get inside of it. The creature comforts alone would be overbearing to 21-year olds like me.

LOTUS
Light weight, great performance. Other than TVR, Lotus has their cars done right. I seen my least favorite Lotus Esprits and then the Elise Later. The new Elise is a bit too aggressive. I think the Toyota MR-S looks less agressive and packs 20 less hps. They had two Esprits from what I seen.

SCION
Meaning "descendant," Scion is being released across the country ever since being around in California for maybe a year (darn you, California!). The Xa and Xb were out in full force. Only three cars were there. The Xa, and then two versions of the Xb. I got into the Xb first, because I think the Xb will sell much better than the Xa. Some people don't like the Xb because it's too boxy and ugly, but in my view, it's actually pretty fun. It's like the Mini. You know, a car with a serious fun factor that can't outrun Mustangs and 'Vettes. So I was in this bright orange Xb, enjoying the car from the driver's seat. Noticed the carbon fiber trim on the instrument panel and all the trendy cool that only a Generation-Y car can bring. From the driver's seat to my right, I seen (besides people looking inside the Xb) a tuner version of the Xb in this Midnight Blue-like color. It had NOS, a big speaker system in the back, TV screens at the front, and I think it was dropped a little bit. Then when I got to the Xa, it's more aerodynamic, but I lost interest in it. I also picked up some sampler CDs with some alright, bumping beats.

SUZUKI
Some of the ugliest cars in Japan (except maybe the Alto Works), but the makers of the monstrous Escudo Pikes Peak car. And don't forget about their two-wheelers and ATVs. I had a chance to see if the Aerio was indeed as feminine as I thought its outside was. Turns out, it is a little too girly for me. I wanted to get into the Verona, but... nah.

SALEEN
I seen the Saleen Mustangs, all of which sporty and mean. They were cool. But red HOT was a kind of candy red Saleen S7. Yeah, you heard me. Saleen S7. America's McLaren and is actually a great American exotic. I took a picture of the front of the car and the dashboard. But other than that, that's it from Saleen.

40TH ANNIVERSARY MUSTANG EXHIBIT
To be honest, it was just a display of Mustangs past and present. Some of them more interesting than others. I seen my favorites, the 60s Mustangs. There was a nice, yellow Mustang that presumably raced Trans-Am in its heyday in the 60s or 70s.

OTHERS...
I seen a red car that wasn't a Ferrari. Turns out, it is a beautifully aerodynamic Lamborghini Murcielago. To be in front of the car was pretty damn cool. You may have raced it in Need for Speed 2: Hot Pursuit. Behind the Murcielago, I seen the Ferrari 360 Modena. I took my inexpensive PenCam and took a bunch of pictures, 76 to be exact. The final picture was the Cadillac Cien, but it got too fuzzy, so I deleted it from my camera and my PC. I sure enjoyed mingling with the city of Houston. Been talking to people as they look in the cars I been in. This cute girl was in a few of the cars I was in, so I enjoyed having fun. Houston has some fun people. The different associates representing the Houston auto branches were very knowledgable and provided a lot of information. When I went to Lincoln, I was so amazed with the features of the Lincoln LS. It may have beaten BMW in performance, but in luxury, it was no Jaguar or Maybach. Personal comfort was exquisite. Or perhaps, there would be a few cars I didn't get in that would change my mind. I didn't get into some of the luxury Acuras because I wasn't seriously interested. I wanted to try out the F150, but didn't really get into it. The SS-R truck would have been cool. In fact, free photos of you in the SS-R could be had. But I wanted to tour the entire show floor. When I was in the yellow Audi TT Roadster, this one guy joked saying that I looked good in the Audi roadster. After thinking about it, I imagined myself riding I-45 across town. I knew that if I wanted to really show off my cool nature, I'd head down to Rice Village and maybe go to my favorite sushi restaurant, Japon. Then go across the street to Planet Anime. Afterwards, I watch the sun go down as twilight comes, and I come home. Then this one girl with his boyfriend (I guess) took a picture of me as I was in the Volkswagen Golf R32. He was saying that I was a "lucky man." I still didn't know what he was talking about, but nice to go away from the show being photographed. Makes you feel special and loved, even if you are "lucky." Children loved the show as much as the adults. They want to sit in the car and see what it would be like if they were to sit shotgun. Sometimes children would want to ask if they can come in, and they did. I even opened the door for them so they can jump in. One little girl was shy and went to her mother. Then three... I guess preteen girls, got into the Honda Element (I think it's a cool car). So they were hanging out enjoying the features and everything. Someone laid the driver's seat all the way back, and as I joked, if you are a guy and got dumped by your girlfriend and you had an Element, you can basically sleep in the car (I don't think the police will let you get away with it, though. So do this at your own risk, you male Element owners). I had a tough time choosing between the Pontiac Vibe and the Toyota Matrix. Since I don't see myself in any other Pontiac other than a Trans-Am or a GTO, I liked the Matrix. The Civic was pretty cool, and I'm not sucking up to Honda just to tick off "rice fighters." The rally-style shifter on the dashboard is a cool touch to the inside of the newer Civic Si. So at almost every car stand, I took pamphlets representing the different companies from Mazda to Porsche. I have to say the Scion Xb is not a bad choice for a daily driver, especially considering that it is a GREAT tuner car base. Give it a few years, it might even compete with the Civic tuners. I would still like to see a mod for it that makes it look like a truck like in "Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero." it would be interesting for that car and the Honda Element. And I hate to say this, but the boxy Xb is cooler than the Hummer H2. It gives up more weight and power to the H2, but it is a great daily driver.

I really enjoyed myself at the show. The next Houston Auto Show should come up around the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. The next show will be from January 28, 2005, all the way to maybe February 6th. See you next year at the show!

By the way, I cannot upload my 75 pictures because they are all pretty big. They are at 1024 x 768, totaling about 140+ MB. I still have them, but it's just too much to show off. And if Shob wants to work on his pictures a little more, then that's fine. As of the date of this reply and my last one, the show goes on until April 11th. So, that will do it for me here.

Im going back in a couple of hours with my girlfriend. Hopefully there will be less people there so i can focus harder on getting better pictures. Maybe even a pic of my gf in the Elise...maybe even the Astons. Heheheh.

That would be "go fast. Look stock." :)

Hope you get a pic of the Elise, Shob, with or without your girlfriend. Gotta love that car, and though the lines are quite aggressive looking, they still grow on you.

It was still a pretty good show. I don't know. It kind of felt a little empty on cars to see, but, I think it was still a good show. I know I was at Reliant Center to see Hot Import Nights there last year a week before Le Mans. My pencam (which takes fuzzy pictures sometimes, will have to contend with the HIN Imports, if I make it there this year. And with dark light, taking pictures will be a challenge. Hopefully they'll have a demo version of Gran Turismo 4 up there. That is a BIG maybe.

I have to say the coolest car I been in was the Scion Xb. I mean, I know people don't like this boxy ride, but I think it's youthful, creative, and can make for a not-so-bad daily driver. I mean, it's as mean as an American SUV, but stylized in a way only Japan can bring. Of course, Scion is the latest motor arm of Toyota. The only sad thing at the Scion stand was that the tC wasn't on display. Now, the Scion tC is a racy sedan from this make, and if they shown that car (it goes on sale this June) or at least a concept of it, I'd be in love with the machine. I still hark back to the suprising comfort of the 350Z. Despite the off-camber talk after driving it for a while, I can see why the "kids" like the 350Z. I personally think it's an alright car, but after sitting in it, I'm impressed. I really am. I think the Volkswagen Beetle was cute to be in. It's actually pretty fun, even for a guy like myself. I got the Beetle as a race car in Gran Turismo 2 and have two Beetle Cup cars in GT3. Call it girly if you wish, but it is about as fun as the Mini Cooper, even if it gives up about 20-50 horsepower.

I mean, that's what I think. Comment if you wish.

Lol! OK, point taken. By the way, I like the limp wrist icon ;) "Ooh! Handbags!"
