I have found that changing the configuration makes for easier control.
I set the accelerator to the large R pad.
Up shift / Downshift on the two L shoulder pads.
Brake = X
Change Views = ^
Emergency Brake = O
reverse = small R shoulder button
? = whatevers left on the box

I can brake and accelerate at the same time easier. Leads to tighter turns and more controlled pwer slides. I only change views occasionally, so I put that out of the way. Who needs reverse? Emergency brake is a quick slide from the normal brake. (a quick one tow punch here is useful with FF cars).
