I guess they won't exactly die out, but we'll probably never see any monsters like these again...
 
I'm curious about that too. If they weren't building the RX-8 for a few months now, what were they still building the motors for? Parts?





Still, a shame to see it go. Hopefully they can finally get that new design they've been kicking around forever now together.
 
But the engine does have its attractions. Light weight and high power (for that weight) being 2.

Just think. The rotary has had ~60 years of just Mazda improving it. How good would it be if it had over 110 years of every single car manufacturer throwing billions at it to make it more reliable and efficient. How efficient was a piston engine in the 1950's? 💡

I think the problem with rotaries is that piston engines have been developed and redeveloped countless times for over 100 years now and the entire industry is geared toward designing, improving, building, and maintaining those piston engines.

Rotaries haven't enjoyed the same love. At the current rate, it'd take thousands of years for rotary development to reach the point piston engines have reached in 100. Luckily Mazda is one of few car companies passionate enough to continue developing the technology. Now they're working on gas and diesel versions both.

Mazda has probably, at best, around 100 engineers working on the rotary engine. Realistically, it's probably no more than a handful of anti-social 'mad-scientist' types working in a shed with almost zero funding. Think about how many thousands, probably tens of thousands of engineers (including those at Mazda!) that continually develop the piston engine every day. It's remarkable the Wankel is as advanced as it is.
 
Rotary Supercars
We hadn’t heard any news from little known German manufacturer Rotary Supercars since news first broke in August last year about the company’s plans to release a supercar sporting an eight-rotor wankel rotary engine reported to produce 2,800bhp and 3,494Nm of torque.

site has been updated to include a full sized flash video claiming that Rotary’s first entrant into the supercar market is “coming”, before flashing to the teaser you see above.

No information has been released with the teaser image but from the computer generated picture it’s evident just how futuristic Rotary Supercars is planning this car to be. It’ll feature an extremely low and streamlined body with a large tail signifying that this car will indeed be mid-engined.

Isn't that the same company that "announced" a car with similar specifications but provided no proof of any of it actually existing besides a badly photoshopped picture of a Ferrari 599?
