Saw this over the weekend and my god, this movie being 20 years old now still doesn't disappoint. It would've also been 20 years ago since I've seen it in a theatre. It was one of the few movies my family went to see twice.
In a lot of movies I noticed the 3D isn't as apparent or widely used, but in Jurassic Park they make good use of it in nearly every scene. The 3D was crystal clear, it never seizes to amaze me what these studios are doing with 3D technology these days.
The last movie I saw in 3D was The Hobbit, again in an IMAX theatre. IMO, JP is about on par with that movie or maybe a little bit better. They certainly didn't skimp out on the 3D details for a quick buck, it was a legit re-mastering of the film. Just about every action scene was enjoyable and lived up to expectations.
Though in this age of high definition, JP did show some age. The Brachiosaurus scene towards the beginning was the fakest looking scene in the entire movie, IMO. Not that it looks bad, I'm just saying if there was a scene to point out that looked super aged, that would've been it. Not exactly a good way to start off a movie famed for its effects. Some of the CGI in the kitchen scene looks dated too. But THE T-Rex scene looks, sounds, and feels spectacular.
High Definition also revealed even more movie mistakes and the ones we all know about are even more apparent. I couldn't help but analyze every shadow/reflection/corner just to catch a glimpse of the production crew. That was kind of distracting, but I had seen this movie like 100 million times so its just what I do now, look for things I've missed the first 100 million times.
I knew a 3D rerelease would garner enough attention for it to hit theatres. Unfortunately when I went, there wasn't but a hand full of people in the theatre (20 people at most) and this was 7:00 PM on a Sunday. The movie was playing in 3 different theatres, one in more traditional real D and another in standard 2D.
The movie still has its charm, as the audience broke out in a chuckle here and there. I remember in 1993, parents were leaving the theatre with traumatized children during the T-Rex/Raptor scenes. I agree its a bit much to see a full grown man be eaten off a toilet, or mauled to death by a raptor (happens three times in this movie not including the cow), children in peril at the mercy of a killer T-Rex. It amazes me the T-Rex kills so many things in this movie... a goat, a perfectly good Ford Explorer, a lawyer, a gallimimus (sp?), and two raptors all in plain sight, on film. It also attempts to kill two children, three grown men, and a woman and then is heralded at the end as the hero of the film...
And it is refreshing to see Jeff Goldblum in his prime playing one of his iconic characters, Ian Malcolm. They just don't have actors like this anymore! You know Hollywood can't be carried by the same lot of superstars from the '90s forever... Hollywood needs to up its game and REALLY look for some talent. This new Will Smith movie looks stupid and I'm not paying for it... this new Tom Cruise movie looks even dumber, not paying for it either. Its time to see fresh new faces, fresh new stars. This whole "lets use obscure foreign actors for every role" thing is really going to bite Hollywood in the ass in about 10 years when Tom Cruise and Will Smith are too old to make the movies we all want to see. Who else then will fill their shoes? I can't recall an actor in the last 10 years that left any impression on me. There were a few good roles out there for them, but they aren't consistently good, memorable actors or even personalities on par with the likes of Goldblum or any major star from the '90s. Not to mention, anyone with any actual talent tends to OD on some drug or another... could it be because this industry is that screwed?
Ugh, price gouging at the box office and concessions is really killing this industry too. $8.00 for a small box of corn and a cup of soda? Really?? And they wonder why people are ripping movies and pirating them. I don't pirate movies, I think you should always support something that interests you but then again I can sympathize when the moving going experience costs an arm and a leg now.
But anyways... Jurassic Park 3D was a fantastic experience, one which does meet expectations. No real complaints. Now... how about 1979 Alien in 3D?
