Last Saturday, I went and picke up my new car. A 1991 Honda Civic Hatchback DX. It has been sitting in a friend of my father's driveway for about a year. It needs some work, and I'm willing to do it. The real problems are follows. A dent in the front pannel on the driver's side, needs new battery cables in order to run, I need to replace the seat and the carpeting. My dad has the idea of going with a CF hood and side pannels, I've seen them Ebay for as low a $175. Is that a good deal and how much do they usually regularly. He also wants to put CF pannels up front because ot the one that is dented. Is this a good idea and do then make them for my year? Finally, what is a good cheap racing seat. My dad just wants to take them out and buy ones that are used. Buy I don't. So I want to know what is the cheapest racing that I can get that is both confortable and fuctional. Thanks. When I get the chance, I'll post some pictures.

Right now, it's just going to be the stock seat belts that I'm going to use. Maybe, over time I might switch over to five points, just because of the fact that they are so old themselves. But for now, it's jsut going to be the stock belts. As of what I'm going to use it for, its going to be my daily driver/show car. I just do want it to be a trailer queen, because that would be a lame idea.

Where do you live at? I've got a '91 Si that I think I'm going to be parting out here pretty quickly, I've got seats and carpet :)

I don't think I'd bother with the carbon fiber stuff, from what I've seen the cheap panels are going to be a different material with a thin layer of carbon fiber over them. Probably not a whole lot of weight savings, the only advantage is that they look like carbon fiber if you like that kind of look. I'd bet you could find somewhere else to spend the money that would make a more noticable difference in performance.

Seats, you might want to look at seats out of a Civic or CRX Si. They're really nice, supportive seats. You could probably pick up a set fairly cheaply. Maybe not quite what you're looking for, but they're worth looking at if you haven't already. Plus they wont look completely out of place in the car :)

Anyway, it should be a fun car. I drove the Si for about a year before a guy in an F150 decided he wanted to run over it. Other than the engine and some minor stuff I think the DX is the same as the Si.

He's not doing it for performance he's doing it for..."show." or as i like to call it...

ANYWAY...what are you putting racing seats in for if you haven't done anything to the car yet? If you want a show car put a stereo in it, not racing seats and CF. A good show is

#1. Meticulously clean
#2. Eye catching - NOT symmetrical. It has been proven that the human eye is more sensitive to seeing things are somewhat out of place. Ie. suicides on one side, scissors on the other.
#3. shiny, shiny, shiny. People like a good shine, some reflection, and lots of lights. Don't go overboard tho. Especially underglow. Neons anywhere but under the car. Please. For the sake of god.
#4. a good show car can blow the skirt off of any woman that walks by. Invest ikn a stereo.
#5. THEN the racing seats. Before then, get them re-upholstered or something. Thats also much cheaper and looks great.
#6. Body work. It's not a necessity but it absolutely helps. When it comes to the body however, symmetricity is kind of important, otherwise it looks as though the kit was constructed sloppily (if by hand) or not put on properly.
#7. Colour. Lots of colour.

If you want to create some sort of image for yourself, turn it into a sleeper. Not a ricemobile. A sleeper daily-driver is so much more []D [] []V[] []D than some car that looks like it was on "Pimp My Ride".
Well, from my point of view anyway.

You could probably just pull the seats out of an Integra, from what I have heard, they fit and are fairly supportive. If you get racing seats, just get one pieces, much more professional. Though not quite so nice to your passengers

Cheap CF means its not real, or as said above, just a thin layer over normal stuff. A good CF hood for that model will save about 40 pounds from what I know (which is talking to serious autocrossers with them)

Couldn't find any good pictures of the 2000ish Integra Type R seats, but they look about the same.

retsmah,
Where would I be able to find seats like that for my car. I would buy them of you, but I dont have the money right now and I live out in Jersey. Would I look on a place like Ebay or just go to a local junk yard and find them there?

Yeah, I think shipping would hurt sending them from here to new jersey :)

I've seen them for sale in online classifieds, I've seen several sets of Si seats for sale on craigslist.org. A lot of people with Sis like to go for the bright red aftermarket seats, so they aren't impossible to find. Ebay motors... local classifieds in the paper occasionally mention parting out cars... I really don't know where the best place to look would be. Any big Honda forums/clubs might be a good bet. Good luck :)

As someone else mentioned, you can look at integra seats too. 5th gen civic seats should bolt up without a problem, so I'd assume that a lot of the integra ones would too.

Try the sources thread. I'm pretty sure that Sparco, Recaro and other safety/accesories companies were listed. Order some online, tax free!

If you can find a 92-96 Prelude with good condition seats, you'll have more support than you need. :)

Not if you buy a mustang hood for your crx. I didn't know that carbon fibre was popular with CRX's...you should be able to find it, and it should fit...it's not like they make parts for cars that don't fit them. Are you doing anything to the engine?

If you're going to buy stuff online don't use ebay unless you're absolutely sure. Too many scammers and a lot of fake products. I would suggest going to http://jhpusa.com/catalog/index.php for honda parts since they make very quality (mostly jdm imported) parts. They have some seats on there that are pretty cheap too but I didn't really look around too much.

pimp racer
Yes you can buy Carbon Fiber parts for a CRX I have seen alot of ricers with them around but what would be the point?

Well, look at it this way.

The point of low-power, low-weight sports cars - even if they ARE FWDs - like the CR-X and MX-3, is the low weight aspect of it.

Say that a carbon fibre bonnet (or "carbon fiber hood") shaves 30lbs (nearly 14kg) off your kerb weight. So what?

"So what?" indeed, if you're driving a four ton Hummer H2. But on a 1000kg (2204lb) CR-X, that makes a difference. Now, instead of 170hp/tonne, you've got 172hp/tonne without any tinkering to the engine which may affect its operational lifespan. And that's just one panel, which cost you £120 in the short term, nothing at all in the long term and which you can screw on yourself...

 I know the effects of Carbon Fiber. Sorry for not being clear. What I was trying to say was what would be the point of spending alot of money on a car such as a CRX? IF I were him I would try and look for a Mazda Miata since they handle great from what I hear. I hear they are cheap and they also are not really heavy.

A standard CR-X would, in a straight line, leather a standard MX-5 (Miata) 1.8. Despite being FWD, the CR-X isn't the shocking handler you might expect it to be. If you're tracking them, I wouldn't expect there to be an awful lot between them. In the real world, and in the hands of a novice driver, the CR-X would be a far better bet (especially if there's any snow or rain about) and far safer (especially if there's any snow or rain about).

What's the point of spending a lot of money on any car? If you just saved a bit more, you can always buy a better one.

Heh I guess that is true. But I would still get the Miata. I heard they are fun to drive.

I think I'd test drive both rather than go on what I've heard :p

The Civic and Miata are both fun to drive... I'm guessing that you couldn't get a Miata for the price he paid for his Civic.

Well I would test drive also but his car is a 91 civic so I dont think the owner would offer you to test drive like a dealership would they? I dont know if they do or not since we never bought a used car.

You test drive used cars just like new cars.

Never bought a used car... you've missed out on all the fun of driving a half hour to find that the car is nothing like the owner described it and you've just wasted your afternoon :)

Ah yes. This past summer when I was looking to get my first car, I had called a guy who had a 90 or so Accord. He said it was in great condition and he had just had it detailed. So I got the address and my dad said he'd drive me, we got on the block and I saw this ugly car. There were rust bubbles on the fenders and paint peeling off the hood. I told my dad just to keep driving.
