I'm basically out of ways to speed up our site...so I'm taking my last, and most epensive (:() resort. I've just placed an order for a brand new Dual AMD Opteron 242 server, with 2GB of DDR RAM and a 160 GB hard drive. The server is also located in a new data center in San Jose, CA, so if any of our problems are network related, hopefully they will be fixed as well. To put it simply, this is really pushing my abilities to financially support the site, and if it doesn't help our situation we are faced with a serious problem. So please, wish me luck and keep your fingers crossed that this helps.

And before someone asks, our old (current) server is a Dual Xeon 2.0 Ghz server, with 1 GB of RAM and a 73 GB drive located in Scranton, PA.

I'll be the first to thank you for the great effort (and expense) you put into this site. You give us GT players a place to go.
Thank you.

Is there any way we can help? Can I (we) donate money to help run the server?

Jordan,

It's a great site you have and a great place to discuss all things Gran Turismo. Uprgrading the server is just a bonus. My fingers are crossed for a faster site!

Good luck.

Yeah, the new server should help the speed issue a good deal. Thanks for this one, Jordan, I hope everything runs smoothly *knocks on wood*

The speed's have improved, there's no point at the moment to upgrade to a larger server. As the week has progressed, GTP's been getting faster for most of us.

As always, many thanks from all of us! Here's to hoping all goes well... :)

BTW, the server was only slow for me on the first two days of the redesign... right now it's puttering along at the same speed as GTP5, which was plenty fast. Is it slow on your end, or are you just getting complaints? When I click on a link, there's about a 5 second pause as it connects to the server, then the thread shows instantly (aside from avatars and a few other images, of course). Before, it was taking about 20-30 seconds, which definitely was slow, but 5 seconds is very fast.

Jordan, I'd certianly kick in some cash to help with the finances. As it is, with GTP lite, the site has really picked up speed in the past few days.

I still get a handful of 404s and dropped posts, but it's improving quite well.

Good luck with the new set-up.

If you would really like to, you can help out here. Please understand that it is completely voluntary and anonymous, there is no need to donate if you don't want to. But, of course, I would greatly appreciate it.

There are many problems with the server we are on. Even though the site may be running faster, Apache and MySQL are causing many strange problems that have even left the professional server administrators puzzled. I don't feel confident in its stability or reliability.

Oops! Thanks for the heads-up, spock. :)

Everything is much appreciated, Jordan. 👍 Hopefully everything will speed up a lot (seems fine to me right now though) once you get everything moved over to the new server.

Ah, that sucks. Good luck with the server move and everything! Thank you! We are all previlidged to have a webmaster like you!

...we are not on the new server, yet, Racy. :)

This site is the only thing that keeps me awake in most of the lectures at school. Thanks a lot man.

Any ideas as to when your new server will be up? Also, what's going to happen to the old one?

Thanks for the well-wishes, everyone. :) The server should be set up within 48 hours, I don't know what specific time it will be ready. I'm leaving for Indianapolis to go to the US Grand Prix on Wednesday, so if it takes a bit longer than that I might not be able to move the site over until I get home on Monday. The old server will probably be resold to a new customer of our hosting company.

Erm, I don't think the site is slow at all. Sure, it was slow at first but now it is somewhat reasonable. My internet connection isn't that great though. Hopefully I'll be upgrading to Cable soon(I'm currently looking at networking options for if we do).

Nice, enjoy it. Thanks for the great site aswell, sorry you have to dig deep to keep it running but we GTP-ers REALLY appreciate it. I don't know what I'd do without my daily dose of GTP;).

Thansk again!

Does donating mean I get the right to be a ***** and outright say :

Jordan, You really should've gone Opteron..

Still looking forward to the new server though !... As always - I am impressed by your efforts 👍

Cheers..

Do your UK details work with the American site?
Yeah, it worked fine. I didn't know if it would, but gave it a go anyway and it accepted my email and password no problem.

Well, you know, I've always been an Intel fan myself. But your comment made me do a bit of research and I was shocked at the results! I was so impressed, that I actually put in a request to change my order to a Dual Opteron 242...it's only slightly more expensive but it should be worth it. I hope they will allow me to change since our Xeon is still a few parts short of completion!

Done :D Does this mean I'm a part owner now? :p
No, sorry, you've got to wait for our IPO before you can claim part ownership! :p Seriously, though, I just can't thank you enough, daan. :)

Thankyou very much, Jordan..... The 56k'ers don't seam to be having much trouble.. However, I'm on DSL, and using GTP6 (full version).... It is still just as slow as it was a week ago..... I haven't noticed any improvement in speed....

If you haven't noticed, this is my favorite site, so I applaud you for going the extra mile, to keep us members happy..... It is very much appreciated.....

;)
