Alonso made a mistake...unimpressive it is

This - he caught Alonso sleeping on his older rubber.

There was no mistake, Alonsos tyres were shot, Kobayashi had fresh options and was eating tarmac like fat kid on cake. I think he over took about 4 cars in those final few laps. Exciting stuff indeed..

Are you sure? It's clear as day Alonso broke too late and locked the rears (I would call that a mistake), causing him to run wide, giving plenty of room for Kobayashi to sneak up the inside.

Mistake or not, passing a Ferrari in a Beamer is pretty damn impressive.

If engines were the only variable in the relative speed of each car then Kobayashi would probably be leading the championship.

Whilst it isn't an indication of his skill, the pass on Alonso was a relatively easy pass, at least compared to his pass on the Torro Rosso in the same race. And his passes at Suzuka etc.

I will give you that. But it doesn't change the fact he is the best driver to come into the sport for a number of years.

But, but, but...I'm not arguing against his skill one bit (I think he's fantastic and has great potential) - I'm only arguing against the fact that the pass he made on Alonso was an easy one, and all down to the fact that Alonso made a blatant mistake.

Don't get too technical folks. Easy, not-so-easy, hard, Alonso's mistake, shot tyres, Beamer, Ferrari .... I get tired just to read such indepth analysis of a pass.

In the end, it is simple. He DOES IT. Unlike others, Kobayashi goes for the gaps, and he doesn't care one bit if it is the champ Button, his excellency Schumi or the revered Alonso that open them. He is ...

THE OVERTAKER !!!!

:D

That's a bold claim, he may be fast but he hasn't shown his speed against a fast team mate yet.

That prediction was only made on under the possibility that if he was in a front-running car I could see him leading and winning many races on the basis of the disproportionately high frequency of overtakes made by him relative to everyone else. :D

An important thing to note here is that he's where he is now by absolute luck. What if Timo didn't crash last year? Kamui probably wouldn't be at Sauber, and would still be playing around in GP2.

Very True Peter. Although great careers have been born out of luck. Michael Schumacher, for example. He only got the call to race for Jordan in Belgium in 1991 because regular driver Bertrand Gachot was imprisoned for assulting a London taxi driver. Had that event not happened, Bertrand would have been racing as normal. Michael might never have had another chance after that and then we'd more than likely have no seven times world champion. My point is, you take what oppurtunities you are given. And then, you try to make the most of them. Because chances are if your succesful, nobody is going to care about how you got to where you are. Again, Michael Schumacher is a prime example of this. He was a flawed genius, his tendency to drive (or attempt to) other drivers of the track under pressure is undeniable. And yet because of what he achieved despite this, he has millions of fans worldwide. On the contary, he has many haters as well. Anyhow, I shall finish this now. Seems to me I may have accidently been too long winded with this. :scared:

Impressive Q1 for Kobayashi! Too bad it stop raining.

I've been a fan of his for a while, I actually started supporting Sauber just because of Kamui!
I think that if he was in one of the top few teams he would have a serious chance to fight for/maybe win the Drivers championship.
He really is a talented driver & if he doesnt get a good seat in 2012 I'll be surprised.
I just hope Sauber can produce a better car in 2011.

Only one banzai move this race, and we didn't even see it. Most were done on him.

I was really annoyed with Legard and Brundle today...

They kept saying Kobo was letting people past - they didn't see that he locked his fronts every time he braked at turn 1... The car looked horrid on the hards - once he'd changed tyres it looked better!!

So do I, although I'm not sure that is going to be an easy task for Sauber. For starters, they have not had so much backing this year. And that is where most of a teams revenue comes from. Lets just hope companies in Japan have been taking notice of Kamui's performances this year and are willing to sponsor them. Otherwise, Sauber may create a competitive car next year, but they will not have enough money to develop it further. Even without in season testing, Formula One is still a development race. If you are unable to keep with with development, you'll end up slipping backwards. However, if Sauber can produce a good car next year and keep up with development; we could well see Kobayashi on the podium next year. And that will really make teams further up the grid pay attention.

Sauber have had mostly full BMW backing still this year, this is why there are barely any sponsors....just like Honda-Brawn.
Nothing to worry about, Sauber also have good staff and excellent (though aging a little now) facilities at Himwil. James Key has been a good asset, the only thing they may miss next year is a experienced driver to help the development and testing of the car.

They won't be surprise title challengers next year, but they should be solid midfield runners again, enough to allow Kamui to keep showing his skills.

In other words, they went "In Soviet Russia.." on him?

Yeah, I was annoyed that they didn't show him pass Alguersuari. I'll credit Kobayashi on his 10th place finish though 👍

Has anyone got a link to the evasive manouver Kobayashi had to pull from behind the Lotus? One of the best demonstrations of car control I ever saw!

According to The Sun news paper, Kobayashi set the fastest top speed of the race by reaching 195 MPH. I didn't think the Sauber would have the highest top speed in this race.

This guy has some serious potential. He reminds me of Hamilton with his hard-charging, overtake-everyone driving style.

My 2nd favorite driver, he is quite amazing, and a driver who will over time draw more and more spectators who just come to watch him race.
I just wish the commentators would stop using 'banzai' and 'kamikaze' to describe his driving, I find it a bit racist to be honest.
