Its quite hard to review this film. The Writer/Director, Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Last Boy scout) is without a doubt a great writer, a superb writer. This is possibly the funniest film i have seen all year. No wait, it is! The only problem is the rest of the film just isnt very good. Let me explain.
Robert Downey Jr (Harry) is a theif who accidently gets an audition for a role in a movie & meets up with Val Kilmer (Gay Perry) to give him detective lessons for his role. & then the rest just sort of falls into place, with the (gorgeous) Michelle Moynaghan in there somewhere too.
The 3 leads are great, no denying that. Robert is a great actor. He also provides naration, but he is a self knowing narator so alot of that is piss-taking out of other films & cliche's in films. Val is great, & him & Rob have perfect chemistry together, just like Mel & Danny in Lethal Weapon. They know comic timing & i was on the verge of tears many times at some of the lines. The script truely is hilarious! The problem is, that the film itself just isnt very good.
To be honest i'm not really sure why it isn't that good. Its pant wettingly hilarious, the actors are great & it has a great sense of itself so it is taken seriously. But the film itself is just well.... a bit limp. The only problem i can identify is that its far to complicated for its own good. It dosent need to be.
Its such a shame, because the script is pure genious it just deserves a much better "film" to go with it. Oh and dont beleive the reviews this isnt "noir" as they all keep saying. its a buddy comedy! pure & simple.
