is your PC linux OS'd?

It was. I was running Mandrake Linux 8.0 for about 6 months. I finally decided that Linux wasn't ready for the desktop, and re-installed Windows 2000 Professional. I used to dual boot, and even tri-boot with BeOS (most awesome), but I found that I rarely used the others. Windows 2000 is very stable, and any desktop application for Linux or BeOS was just a copy of one for Windows. Linux is the "free server OS". When you pit it against any other web serving software/OS, the price is unbeatable. Windows 2000 Server is over $800, and isn't as stable as Linux. Solaris requires Sun hardware, and the package deal is going to cost you an arm and a leg. Mac ... ha ha. The other option is BSD, and BSD rocks the house. Unfortunately it doesn't make a good workstation either.

Windows on the workstation, Linux or BSD on the general server (file/web/mail). If you're on a big network with a bunch of Windows workstations, you might as well have a Windows server for Windows Networking. If you're doing high end database stuff, Solaris is your friend. Everything else can go away.

Sadly, no. I am on the verge of purchasing a new camera, though. Has anyone had any experience with a Nikon F2? I think that's the one I was looking at a couple weeks ago.

Interesting to hear a well-expressed rational viewpoint about operating systems. Well played! I've been running 2KPro on my machine at home for ages, and keep being asked why I'm not running Linux.

Yeah, it's the whole "best tool for the job" thing. You don't drive a nail with a shovel, and you don't dig a hole with a saw. Everything is designed for a purpose, and every project has a tool assigned to it. Use the right one and you'll save everyone a lot of headache.

My webcam is 'fully operational'. It updates every 15 seconds, but you'll be pulling that image strait from my computer ... so it might be slow at times.

Gee, I guess I could link it here too! (:

I love my optical mouse - especially with my laptop, it's so much easier with it working on any surface...

I saw that web camera shot last night - I thought about PMing you to say that it looked like the place was on fire...

surprising for some dude who sounds so cool to be a geek !

Hey now, geeks are people too! (: I am probably the most well-rounded person you will ever come across. I put people and morals ahead of everything else. Friendships are the most important thing to me.

If your view of 'geekdom' has been damaged by some jerk sys-admin, tell your boss, PLEASE. The industry needs more people, but first and foremost they have to be good people. I hate that system administrators are known only for their computer skills and large paychecks. The SNL skit with the computer tech that screams "MOVE!" at his co-workers is funny, and true, and annoys the CRAP out of me.

I had two geek roommates last year, worked with one of them (actually, he had my current job before me). By chatname - Mayco is a server application genius, but he's never been much of a people person. He's a nice guy, but he can't handle people who 'just don't get it'. Fade is a bit different. He just hates people. That's bad, real bad. We keep him in the back room with the servers (:

Everyone thinks I'm so great because I'll actually talk to them. I show a little personallity and suddenly I'm not the big scary tech. Mostly I make the users fix the computer and I just watch. It's a learning experience for them and they love it. I also explain things to them instead of just telling them to get out of my way. I'm on a firstname friendship basis with everyone (roughly 55 employees) where I work, and I have no enemies. I've been there three years (anniversary this week), and the only person with complaints about me had a nervous breakdown and was fired - I don't concider that to be my problem (:

I helped Jordan move to his new webhost. He deamed me "Holder of hands". I thought this was very fitting. I don't usually end up doing the work, I just hold someone's hand while they read the instructions and do it themself. And they PAY me for that ... amazing.
