i dont know if this is a repost, but if you have those kryptonite U-locks, return them asap.

turns out the lock can be busted with your average everyday Bic-pen. the dolts who created it made the whole thing invincible, but apparently forgot about the lock itself.

if it is a repost, then what can i say...im sorry. i did a search and got nothing.

just want to help fellow membes out! 👍

This would have been great information....eleven years ago!

I lost my $300 bike due to someone shattering the very same type of lock on my Schwinn. True to their word, Kryptonite refunded me the price of the lock (about $40 back then). However, it didn't offset the fact my loss of bike, nor shipping cost (about $5 of the heavy broken pieces. Not to mention, waiting 90 minutes for a police report, since cops don't give highest dispatch priority to bicycle theft.

Needless to say, I use a wire-style combo lock now. No thefts since 1993.

My brother once got sick and left early from school one day, leaving his bike there. Well, he was sick for over a week, and one day my dad, my brother and I were coming back from the doctor when we happened to drive by the front of the school. All that was left was the front wheel of his bike, with the cheap, K-Mart lock still attached.

And to think that before that, during the BMX craze, we used to use those four-digit combination chain-locks for our bikes. True, if you wanted to remove them you'd need bolt cutters and about 2 seconds of spare time, but at least you'd have to lug the bolt cutters around and they wouldn't fit in your pocket! Plus if you got stopped by cops you couldn't say you were using them for any other reason other than to in fact cut bolts...

Thieves these days have no integrity. They're lazy and try to take the easy way out. At least in the 80s when your bike got stolen you knew someone else must have worked at least a little hard to steal it. Nowadays all you can say is, "Well, I guess they had a pen with them, so that's the end of that!"

he locked it on the front of the bike? bad move.

you should always wrap the lock between the frame and the rear wheel and chain, then lock it around something that wont be moving anytime soon.

this way nobody can jack your bike by taking off a wheel...and they wouldnt be able to steal the rear wheel.
:D

...and, sorry to hear about your bike pupik...

Yeah but the point is that they at least had to take the wheel off, whereas if he had this Kryptonite device the whole thing would be gone, and we'd likely only have found the lock itself on the ground!

i'd rather buy a new front wheel than a whole new bike...

I have had like 3 bikes stolen in my life time and none had to do with locks. One time I parked my bike outside my friends house when I was like 10 and this truck came buy and grabbed it while I was inside. The other one was taken out of my garage with one of those scramblers and the last one, I got jumped when I went through a really bad neighborhood in miami two years ago :) That was pretty funny looking back lol

I only had one bike stolen before. by the damn neigbors.(sp?) I hated living In town, Now I live in the rural areas where nothing is stolen from me.

That's the type of lock I use. No thefts, but I never ride the thing anymore....

Bike theft? pfft. just last week some really really stupid person stole my combonaiton lock. i just about crapped myself when i saw my bike sitting there with no lock. i mean...holy crap.

If someone wants to buy just a new front wheel, they should have to register with proper ID at the store, which would then turn the information over to the police, so they could track anyone who's buying a lot of front wheels...it would help in cracking bike theft rings...
