lack of moderators/stationed moderators

as of tonight i have begun to realise there are more than a few spammers in the making on the gtplanet forum. tonight the example is here: Spammer example
i cant help but feel that the problems may be because of either of the two following reasons:

1) not enough moderators active
2) plenty of moderators, but all online at the same time so there are gaps when spammers could easily come on and post malicious content.

the topic above i have used as an example is titled "GT4 to be recalled?" and this could be extremely misleading.

i would like to suggest, if the reason being is number 2 above, that the admin recall all moderators and make a list of who is moderator and where they live. that way they can see what timezone they are in and possibly arrange it so there are the same number of moderators on all the time. say have a few from all across the world. this worked at a previous board i myself moderated, named street tuners garage, a similar sized community for nfsu.

i hope you take this into consideration and that we can stop the spammers. thanks alot
 
As of recently, we've actually got the timezone problem down pretty well - with the addition of two new European moderators (yes, you British effs! UK IS EUROPE! HA!)
 
That thread only needed one person to say "This is not the thing to post blah blah blah" and a moderator would've been along later to close the thread and deal with it. It's other members that make these useless threads turn into a problem. You yourself have 3 posts in that thread and I fail to see how they are all neccessary.
 
No offence, but this is somewhat why daan and Touring Mars were assigned to GT4 Moderators. So they could help at US night time.

And even though they were assigned to help, that doesn't mean a moderator can always be on no many how many there are.

Just inform the member of something or report a post. Afterwards, let the moderators take care of it. They'll take care of it sooner or later.

I appreciate your comments, but did it occur to you to push the Report To Moderators button? That automatically dispatches an email to all the staff, highlighting the problem post and thread.

That would probably have been more constructive.

Considering that we've banned 3 advertisers and a spammer today, I think that the current staff is on top of the situation. We just need a little help from the public, just like any other cops.

Don't hesitate to use the Report button, and also, in this case, a following user to have posted a big CAUTION SPYWARE message in the thread until it was dealt with.
 
What troubles me is, Why does none of the newbies use the SEARCH feature. My suggestion we post a Read This in every Subject. And/Or When people register they should READ the fourm rules. Even though im not a Admin or Mod i know how flustrating it is ( Im mad myself ).

You can't make anyone use the search button no matter how hard you try. Heck there are tons of overlapping threads created after the member searched but the terms they used were not quite perfect to get good results.
 
I always report threads as the mod know, I'm more then likely downright annoying with it. But I feel like sometimes we could use a few more mods, and preferably people who have nothing else better to do but be on the forum all the time. I know trying to select mods must be a royal pain, but I think a few more wouldn't hurt. Plus it would ease the load on the staff right now, since I know others of you have lives unlike a few of us.

admittedly, i didnt think to press the Report button because ive never used it, forgotten about it so i did what i usually do, warned others about the thread and pm'ed a moderator.

i agree with BlazinXtreme that there should be even a couple more moderators to sort out timezone differences. apparently we need more european moderators so lets get hiring lol
 
I think the problem with any forum is that there is normally a shortage of mods. GTPlanet doesn't have this problem, but the problem is that you can't always have a mod on at exactly the right time. That's unavoidable with any forum though - moderating isn't a person's full life. They most probably have work, familly, and other responcibilites. It's not so bad on our school forum, because people who attend school tend to have more time on their hands.

Here on gtp, i use the report button for things like advertising, but i rarely come across that. However, newbies posting in the wrong places can usually be sorted out by a "Hi, welcome to gtp! You need to be posting in the such and such forum. Use the Mod tools to move your thread to the such and such forum. Enjoy your stay!".
Mod's aren't needed on every bad topic, because members can, and usually do, tell the new member what topic he/she is looking for, or how to move the thread to the correct place.

You can have as many moderators as you like and there will probably still be gaps. We all have other commitments, work, families, etc etc. We have more active moderators now as we've ever had. There are mods located all over the world in order to close any gaps that may happen.

But if someone wants to spam and/or post crap, there's not a lot we can do until it's posted, and then we get them. The threads may take a wee while to be moved/deleted and the user warned/banned, but we will get them.

As has already been mentioned, users continuing to post in a soon be be deleted thread does nothing other than bring it to the attention of more people, who then post in it themselves. If you see a thread of spam/adverts, just press the report post button and tell us about it, but don't post in the thread yourself, unless it's to tell the spammer that whatever he has posted is not allowed. If another user has told the spammer off, then the best course of action is to walk away.
 
It's amazing that thread went on as long as it did - I can't figure out why people do that. If I find a similar thread on another forum I just ignore it. My life is too short, and it's much easier to hit the back button! Anyway, to the suggestion at hand: More moderators would not solve this problem. No matter how many moderators you have, you just can't expect them to read each and every single post only minutes after its posted. It simply isn't possible, nor is it really that necessary. In this case, 8 people felt the need to add their useless complaints to the thread before anyone actually made an attempt to contact a moderator about the thread. After attention was brought to the issue, it was taken care of in about 20 minutes. That sounds like a pretty good response time to me, especially when the dedicated "Report to Moderators" was not even used! I think the problems here lie with our users, and not our moderation staff. We can moderate all we want, but if people want the site to be of a higher quality, they have to uphold their end of the obligation and ask for help when they need it.
 
i had to use the report button twice this morning because of 2 threads started clearly advertising something. :D

I think the mods do a great job, they respond as quick as they can, and sometimes people do exaggerate the problem (im guilty of this) so imo sometimes the people who rpely are as bad as the people who posted in the first plac.e

Well said Jordan, ill hold my hand up and admit i didnt do my part, though this should be a lesson to all of us who did post in that topic. i respect the moderators and the job they are doing, and i also respect that they can't be on the forum 24/7. i just thought maybe we should look into the timezones and check that MOST times are covered and there isnt a big gap. thanks for your comments everyone.
 
There isn't a significant gap.

We have, at least, UK-based moderators and US-based moderators. This covers 0800-0000 GMT, just for the Brits. Assume a similar band for the US-based moderators (roughly 1300-0500) and that's 21 hours a day of total coverage, 11 hours a day of extreme coverage and a 3 hour "lull" when only Firebird is online.
 
This thread is pointless. The mods are doing a great job and I see no need to change anything. Keep up the good work guys! :)👍

If you include admins, super mods & "normal" un-super mods, there are 22.

But we still do a great job. 👍 :dopey:
