Aston Martin has confirmed that the Lagonda brand is to be revived and a concept car will be ready next year. Aston CEO Dr Ulrich Bez said that new Lagondas will be more luxurious than Astons and will have a different character to a sportscar.

Most people will remember the seventies Lagonda, a tech-fest with challenging styling. Bez said the new cars will use the design language of the past but will be thoroughly modern.

Next year Lagonda celebrates its 100th birthday and Aston will celebrate by unveiling a concept car. The first production models could be in the showrooms by 2012.

Bez said: "We have now investigated and concluded that the revival of the Lagonda brand would allow us to develop cars which can have a different character than a sportscar, and therefore offer a perfect synergy.

Lagonda will use a unique design language as Aston Martin does. We will take elements of DNA from the past but will be very future orientated as we are with Aston Martin. With Lagonda offering exclusive, luxurious and truly versatile products with high quality and usability and suitable for both existing and emerging markets, I believe we can be present in more than 100 countries in the world."

So let me get this straight: Astons are already luxurious, and that takes away from their performance abilities. They want to make a car that is more luxurious and will be even more of a luxo-barge than the Astons? And call it a sports car?

I wonder how they'll pull this off. Continental GTs, S-Classes and Phantoms hardly qualify as "sports cars." And a big V8 or V12 isn't going to make it be one either. It'll have to handle well, and it seems that handling and luxury are generally mutually exclusive.

The article says that the Lagonda won't be a sportscar.

No, that's the whole point, they already make sports cars so they want a new direction that is less sporty and more luxury.

Bring back the wedge!

So I guess this will be Aston's Maybach esque division...

i always thought the original Lagonda was a fantastic design. I really hope the new one is as dramatic as the original.

Yup, pretty dramatic. Actually this isn't the original, it's from the second year of production.

I'll be interested to see this ultra luxury luxury Aston brand. If that makes any damned sense. :D

Wait...they made a coupe?

Apparently they also made a hearse :p

Looks like a swept back Volvo estate!

But seriously I want the new Lagonda to look like the 70's 80's one.. doubt it will happen though.

It would be epic if they brought back the Lagonda in that kind of style! I've only seen one, ever, and it was the opposite of "pretty." I'm interested to hear more on the concept, whatever it may be, from Aston Martin. But as to why this is anywhere near a "good idea" for them right now, I guess I'm not certain. Just give us the Rapide first, please.

I could see the Rapide being the first car in the Lagonda brand. Could give them an excuse to make it a little more of a gentleman's express.

Its a bit like the original V8 Vantage... Its pretty in an ulgy kinda way if you get what I mean.. :sly:

Well this was the last thing to carry the Lagonda name.. the 1995 Lagonda Vignale Concept...

Do you think the new one will draw any styling cues from this one?, which in its self draws from curvy classic models..

I thought something sounded a bit odd about this business venture...

"You're twistin' my melon, man!"

Yeah, anyway... Where does this brand rejuvenation fit in with the imminent Rapide? I'm a little concerned that Aston are going to go and shoot themselves in the foot here by rivaling themselves.

I disagree, Aston want to keep the AM side of things for sports cars, mainly coupe's and performance vehicles...

Lagonda will be their new luxury, comfort, 4 door saloon division which will probably offer the Rapide as its first vehicle...

This way the brands are not crossing over... one is fast luxury and the other is cruising luxury... I could see rich people owning a Lagonda for everyday use and an Aston for something special on the weekend. So Aston gets 2 sales!

Think of it as the differences between AMG and Maybach... (without the saloon AMG's)

Just build something like that and we'll call it even.

Ahh, now you see I thought it'd go the other way. Aston would still sell the Rapide (as a rival for the Quattroporte, Panamera etc) and Lagonda would go and develop a (still fast, but not sporty) ornate, marble dashboard sort of car to rival the Phantom. But, if they do go down that route, they'll have to ensure that the Rapide (as an Aston) is as far as possible from the Lagonda model. What worries me is that the 2 won't be different enough, and we'll end up with 2 Flying Spurs style cars competing with each other. But if they play their cards right, it could work well for them. Let's hope it does :)

It won't offer the Rapide, Lagonda and Aston will be distinctly different, the Rapide is distinctly Aston Martin. The whole idea for ressurecting Lagonda is for the bigger cars, the cars that will be trying to take sales away from Benley's bigger cars.

I'm a little concerned that Aston are going to go and shoot themselves in the foot here by rivaling themselves.

GM did it and still does. I'm sure Ford and Chrysler steal sales from themselves a fair bit too. Even the Germans sell cars under the same brand that you could cross-shop with each other.

Apart from them not being new and being pretty frequently used in the car industry ;).

I almost feel like only one who when he hears the name "Lagonda", he thinks:

Odd considering people older than me always think of the awful AM Lagonda.

By the way, the Rapide fits in with Lagonda...because the Rapide is one of the original Lagonda model names, along with the Rapier.
