In honor of VB's retirement.
Modern supercars have pushed the envelope of performance so far that they require all sorts of technology to keep the average driver from instantly destroying themselves and the car. Hence all-wheel drive to deliver the power, self-shifting transmissions and, of course, traction and stability control. But to the hardcore driver, all of that stuff just gets in the way. Today, Lamborghini has unveiled a special-edition Gallardo that cuts through to deliver a purer experience - the Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni.

Named after Lamborghini's famed test driver, who has helped shape the brand's cars and performance standard for four decades, the LP550-2 is a RWD-only Gallardo sporting a lightly de-tuned 550hp version of the 5.2L V10 found in the recently launched Gallardo LP560-4 and LP560-4 Spyder.

The transition to RWD was not simply a question of moving the transmission to the rear axle, however - the vehicle had to be adjusted and tuned in every element of its driving dynamics. This includes springs, dampers, stabilizers and even the tires. The aerodynamics were also adjusted to take account of the change to the power flow, which explains the re-designed front end.

Furthermore, though an e-Gear transmission is available, the driver's Lambo also gets a gated manual, helping to cut weight to meet the two-wheel-driver's 66lb (30kg) weight reduction goal. To help keep the rear end planted when controlled oversteer isn't desired, a re-worked stability control system can maximize for safety or allow greater slip angles than standard when switched to CORSA mode. A 45% limited-slip rear diff also helps send power evenly across the two rear tires.

Zero to 62mph (100km/h) dashes will take just 3.9 seconds, top speed checks in at a cool 199mph (320km/h), and a with a dry weight of just 3,035lb (1,380kg), the LP550-2 is set to take its place as a top performer despite its 'lack' of AWD.

The Balboni branding also includes a special exterior and interior treatment, with a center stripe reminiscent of sports cars of the 1970s. The Special Edition is available in eight colors, from Bianco Monocerus through to Verde Ithaca, or Arancio Borealis to Nero Noctis. The Scorpius wheels retain their dark grey finish, while the brake calipers come in black, orange or yellow, depending on the exterior paint finish.

The basic color of the full leather upholstery is black. Both seats, however, feature the color strip in white. The center console is completely upholstered in Polar white leather to create a powerful accent. A badge below the left side window bears the signature of Valentino Balboni and the production number of the car.

Only about 250 units of the $219,800 LP550-2 are to be built, though, so if this is the sort of thing that sets your blood flowing, you'd better get in contact with Sant'Agata soon.
Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni

We knew that Lamborghini will eventually make a stripped out lightweight version of the new Gallardo LP 560-4, but news surfaces recently suggest that another version of the baby Lambo is in the works as well which will have 550 hp and will be two wheel drive. So presumably it’s called LP 550-2!

This is not going to be the SuperLeggera version of the Gallardo, mainly because the SL model should have more power than the standard car and it doesn’t.

It’ll have 550hp but it will be lighter than the 560-4 model because it’s only rear wheel drive so it has many mechanical parts less. On the downside, it shouldn’t be as poised and delicate to drive as the 560, however power only going to the rear will make much more fun, maybe a bit of a handful but quit thrilling!

If they ever put LP550r in production it’ll be limited to only 250 units and it will be cheaper than the LP560 by almost 10 percent, so it makes more sense to consider it as a discount version of the Gallardo rather than a light weight track-focused car such as SuperLeggera.

Am I the only one who thinks these Lambos are ugly?

A proper RWD version will make things very interesting against the Scuderia, and I look forward to future tests if/when it happens. That's a lot of power to throw out the back though, I have to wonder how the chassis will react to it (likely fine, no doubt).

Why would it be less poised and delicate? Wouldn't a lighter RWD model be exactly that from being more agile, prone to oversteer, etc?

I don't find them ugly or irresistable, but they really are dragging out every edition they can think of now. What next? Noddy edition?
This isn't an edition. This is an all new model for the lineup intended for those who want a RWD model instead of the AWD.

The only thing I don't like is the offset racing stripe. It looks like some idiot was trying to put it on without centering it.

Point taken. I love how absurd the Scuderia is (that's why I prefer it to the LP560-4), and even to some extent, the GT2 over both... But I guess the overwhelming feeling of brutality, even moreso than the Ferrari, comes to mind when a neuvo Lambo goes RWD.

I think the LP640 and the LP550 are the two best looking Lamborghinis(next to the past models). I've always been a fan of Lamborghini but these two models make me drool a little bit everytime I see a picture of them.

Question though, is that stripe going to be in every LP550-2 because it's alright but I prefer solid colors.

I know, I used 'edition' to cover all. All new? lol. Too little too late Lambo!

It will be. As I learned this morning, the original plan was to market the car off as a cheaper model. However, it's now added on the Valentino Balboni name to the model & has become 250-limited model which now explains why it costs $20,000 more.

It's another attempt to grab sales, but knowing some enthusiasts, it probably will work as they intend it to.

Edit*
Well, as I just learned, the reason for the change of making it limited & adding VB's name is because Valentino officially retired from the Lamborghini world. This is Lamborghini's way of honoring him, with a purist's 6-speed, RWD Lamborghini.

*tingles goes down spine*

It's unfortunate this will only be a special edition. A RWD 6-speed manual sounds like alot of fun.

I just noticed that gold part of the stripe. That looks odd to only be on the one edge of it. I'd say that Lambo could sell a special edition unpainted car that just had primer on it for an extra $20k each.

Just reading about this car being a RWD car makes me dream about it being in drifting competitions. :)

However, I still prefer the front end of the previous Gallardo over this one anyday.

Have I missed something? I thought you had the choice of a conventional six-speed manual or an E-gear in both Gallardo's and Murcie's?

You did in the past. As the MY 11 year draws closer, though, the company has made E-Gear standard due to the people who actually bought the option. The company (& you'll see this in Ferrari & possibly Porsche) has found it more cost-effective to stock 1 gearbox, which in turn, allows the company to focus on just engineering rear ends & transmissions to new motors for only said gearbox. In other words, the 6-speed manual will soon die out for Lamborghini within at least 3-4, maybe 5 years.

As for the current time, the 6-speed is now a special order at best, at least for the LP560-4.

That is both a sad and scary thing to hear. :guilty:

Agreed. I saw the LP560-4 at MPH08, stunning car. As soon as I saw it in the flesh I loved it. I would buy one in in a instance. 👍

Unfortunately though, it's the way the motor industry is heading.
People want motorsport performance for the road, and then these people see Race cars with paddleshift and want it themselves.
Stupid, unfortunate, true.
