A couple of months ago I created a thread about my laptop's fan making screeching sound with overheating problem. A week prior to the fan problem, the fan made a very weird on and off sound and the laptop gets really hot that I have to shut down every couple of hours. Just 3 days ago I boot up the laptop like normally but it didn't get that far. The fan no longer spins and I was taken to the American Megatrends AMI BIOS screen I believe saying I have a fan error accompanied by 2 short beeps which I really have no idea even after Google-ing it.

However, I can still boot into Windows but wouldn't want to take the risk of frying my motherboard or processor. The fan has failed but what does the 2 beeps is all about? Could it be I'm having more than one problem?

That code can means.

PARITY RAM FAIL: reseat the ram or replace.

Thanks for the reply mate, if I remember correctly the only error I noticed on the screen is just the fan error. If it's a RAM failure, I may have to draw more cash to fix it. Now if the RAM failed, means I couldn't boot into Windows right?

If the RAM has failed it does not mean you cant boot into windows but you will get blackscreens, bluescreens of death, freezeing.

Download Memtest86+ and burn it to a CD or mount to USB

Thanks for the link mate, yesterday I tried to switch on the laptop and within 5 minutes the laptop get pretty hot so I abort any process whatsoever. So I decided to take the laptop to a doctor. Made some Google search on the fan and now I know how the fan looks like. Still wondering how it could get damaged...

When you turn on the notebook do you hear the fan spin up?

Fan could be dead or if not that the heatsink assembly is loose.

The fan no longer spins. Before this it has made a loud and annoying screeching sound. I've taken the laptop to the shop and I have addressed them all the problems including the possible memory problem. Well, the fan could fail anytime though :P
Thanks for the help mate!

Why don't you just replace the fan? It's not hard to do. That should have been fixed a couple months ago when it first starting messing up. :)

Well, I'm not really a computer geek and since it's an old laptop, I could also have a heatsink problem or more because a couple of months ago I made a thread about my laptop going overheating really badly. Around 50 degree celcius idle. I consider that as very hot...

I think it's better to let the experts do it. Furthermore, I also asked them to clean up the cloud of dust in the laptop

An update that I have received my laptop from the store....

So they didn't seem to be able to find the short 2 beeps, but they reckon it's nothing serious. They replaced the fan, cleaned up the dust and checked the RAM (which turned out fine). Now I can feel the difference with no more overheating problem, no more screeching sound and everything is now fine.

So thanks to you guys that tried to help me. :)

50C is fine when ideling but 80 when watching things on youtube is another matter.

But the 2 beeps could have been the fan issue.

Hope it continues to work.
