So beginning this past Tuesday, my Acer's screen has had an issue where the screen has gone very dark. It hasn't so much gone out as it has just dimmed down a lot to the point where I need a flashlight to even see what's on the screen. When it starts up, I can Acer and boots up but after a few minutes, it begins having this barely visible flicker until it dims very dark. It still works, I just can't see a thing. I haven't touched the screen settings so I have no idea why is doing this.

Try connecting your laptop to external monitor via HDMI or VGA or whatever its display out. If the image is ok on the other monitor then the LCD monitor of your laptop must be busted.

Tried it and it shows up so it indeed appear to be just the screen (although my dad thinks that my laptop is dying).

It is most likely the backlight on the LCD panel.
Depending on age of the laptop it is either a CCD back-light or an LED back-light.
Laptop screens are easy to replace and about $90 or less depending on the type of panel used.

Replacement just involves removing the bezel, undoing the screws holding the panel(some screws also hold the hinges on so be careful with those) then carefully pull the old panel towards you, there will be a 40pin connector that will have to be undone.
Installation of the new one is the opposite , but on the back of the old panel there will be a part number that you might need in order to get the correct replacement.

Similar thing happened to my HP laptop. Turned out the connection between the screen and the motherboard was loose. Luckily it was still under warranty and I got it replaced. Replacing the screen & connections is pretty trivial on most laptops, and parts are relatively cheap. Watch a couple youtube videos and you'll be fine.

I got mine back in 2010-ish so its been about 5 years. Its a Acer Aspire (5734Z-4836) if that helps with figuring out the screen.

a 2010 will be an LED.
Look for some replacements on ebay for your model(you might have to give the seller a buzz to make sure it is correct).
The replacement doesnt have to be a genuine acer just compatible, since acer get them from someone to that model you can easily find the same panel cheper.
Look at the cost, and weigh it up.
Spend <$150 on repairing it, spend $0 and just use the external or buy a new one with warranty that is faster.
Just depends on how much you are willing to spend on this unit, being old something else might fail soon.
And if you want to keep the unit, make a backup of the recovery, many people do not do this and them they freak out as it will cost $100+ to get re-imaged at the service center or to get the discs shipped out to them.
