Hi there,

short question... how to win the last nascar challenge :S

im stuck @ rank 11 since i cant reach any slipstream there
when i played the game first i turned abs off and it was no problem, but since we have to take 1... i have no clue..

any tipps or hints?

Turn brake pressure down to 0/0 using the in-race menu - limits the efficacy of the ASM.

Other than that, just stay smooth through the corners to keep your speed up, and never lose the slipstream or you're done. The hardest part is the first lap... if you can be close enough to get a tow after the first corner you should be good. It's tricky but not as bad as the pit-stop challenge.

Follow JJ, and be as smooth as possible.👍

In my experience if you're 1.6 to 1.8 seconds back out of the first turn then you will eventually catch up with the draft. Then it's a crapshoot to see who gets to the line first.

When the race starts, stay behind the Jimme Johnson Lowe's car and pass the red Montoya Energizer car.
When you get onto turn 1, stay on the outside line because that is where the draft is! After you get off the turn, you should be able to remain in the draft and make your move.

As for setting up your ABS and stuff...well that won't make much of a difference.

Follow the #48 car of Jimmie Johnson, don't lose his draft and you'll be there right with the big pack!

kk, ill give it a try!
oh my bad... meant jeff gordans nascar school... not the a-spec event, my bad -.-'

The ASM kicks in when your car begins to slide, typically because you're trying to turn too hard. The inside lane will do that quite a bit, so while you don't have any draft, you'll want to run the higher lane. The other benefit to this is that you will have more speed down the straights as well as compared to the A.I.s running the inside lane.

I have struggled with this too, managed third a few times. Ill try the brake balance 0/0 and the high line when not in draft. 👍

Following Jimmy Johnson works (90%)..👍 That last 10%, is up to you. :)

If you are more than 1,8 behind after the first corner you can start over again because there is no way to catch up. Follow Jimmy J in the beginning but dont be afraid to pass on the outside in the second laps first corner. You have to get past Jimmy or he will block you. When I did this I got so angry on Jimmy that I could throw my ps3 out thru the window. Than I found out the way on the outside and dive to get speed and that was not so hard.
Good luck:)

Set ABS to 10. I know it sounds weird but you don't brake anyway and for some reason cars on 10 run faster than on 1. I know this seems counter-intuitive but there you go.

Set controller sensitivity higher. I set it to 5. You don't want to be jerking on corners (wahey!) as it kills speed.

Draft the car which starts immediately in front of you. I know he soon overtakes someone else and it's tempting to draft the other person but don't switch. Follow that car. You should overtake your first car soon after the first slight bend (if not just restart). First split should be around 1.8 or so (if not just restart). Take first hard bend high and then continue to follow that same car you were drafting earlier. I know he is way ahead of you now but just follow him. He will start moving around the track, moving more to the middle ... follow him. Even though it makes almost no logical sense because you should be able to draft any car from the lead pack ... keep drafting that same car the whole time (obviously at least until you overtake him).

I just trophied this after a LOT of pain and many, many, many repeated attempts. I got silver -- I probably could have got gold but I didn't want to risk overtaking the lead car in a tight space and getting DQ'd -- I probably would have thrown my controller into the TV as it was the first time I was even close and the idea of trying to do it again was too horrible so I just slowed down when I got into second. I would have taken bronze and happily never played again. The NASCAR challenges are the only reason I will never gold the entire game -- I never want to play them ever again. Jeff Gordon's repeated inaccurate comments almost drove me completely insane "that was a pretty bad crash" ... I didn't even know I touched anything! Ugh.

Probably the least fun I have ever had with any level of a video game ever (or at least up there with the guy in Unchartered 2 I kept shooting in the head but couldn't kill him because I had to punch him instead).

Keep drafting other cars.

Just been busy with Jeff's nascar school, got gold's on all of them but the last (even the pitstop challenge where on every try you have to sit through the damn animation again).
Managed to get silver on the last one mentioned here after 1 hour trying.

All i can say now is : AAAAARRGGGHHHH!!! hate hate hate! (ears let off steam, and get reminded of that top gear episode where they drive through texas with "nascar sucks" painted on the side of their car).

Brakes set to 0/0
ABS set to 10

Both those will reduce the effect of the ASM which is pemanently on... this means you don't lose as much speed through the corners compared to default settings.

You also need to keep very very smooth through the corners to reduce the amount of time that the ASM kicks in... every time it does, you're losing speed.

And the MOST important thing... draft(slipstream) accurately. This is the fundamental skill required for Nascar.

Nascar doesn't suck. It just requires a very specific and different skill set compared to the more accepted forms of motorsport.

I bet all the challenges gold but can seem to pass this one. Thanks or all the advice also!:)

GT5 has made me appreciate that Nascar might be more difficult than I gave it credit for ... however it also made me hate it even more. The idea that something that pointless and boring is also incredibly difficult makes it all the more baffling to me. Origami at its highest level is incredibly difficult and the people who do it are extremely talented -- also monumentally boring to watch.

So good news Nascar you have won some degree of respect from me.

Bad news I am now even LESS likely than ever watch your nonsense circles.

Each to their own however and if you like it then knock yourself out. Takes all sorts.

It's not all about oval racing. There are some courses which are "proper" circuits, with (gosh!) right-hand turns too! :scared:

And the racing is a lot closer than F1, which I have followed for over 35 years now.

Perhaps because of this, you're only seeing the pack of cars going round, and missing what each individual car is doing. :odd:

Keep in mind that the real thing is a far cry from racing 11 idiots who slow down way too much, slam on the brakes when you get close, and have a rocket-powered slipstream boost. No goofy ASM either.

Juan Pablo Montoya once said something like "the driving is the most boring I've ever done, but the racing is the most exciting I've ever had." i'm sure the quote isn't perfect but you get the point.

Not that I'm a NASCAR fan.

And running into jet dryers on the track is the most bizarre thing he has ever done, lol. (yea, I know it wasn't his fault and knowing everyone is alright, it is pretty funny)

I had just turned the race on and 20 seconds later...whammo.... That was pretty crazy, glad he is ok.

For me, I try to watch the last 20 laps of a NASCAR race unless it is a road course. Then I watch it all.

I have tried the suggestions in this thread to to the last NASCAR challenge, seriously I cannot get out of 10th place. Does not matter who I draft, 10th is the best I can do.

I should also add that I am using the DS3, not a wheel so that does make it even harder.

Turn up the volume. If you can hear the wind, you are not drafting right. (You're going to hear a little wind from time to time.) The less wind you hear the better your finish is going to be.

After many tries you start to learn where the line is that has the draft.

Make sure you are about 1.8 or less behind on the first split, otherwise reset.

I'd just like to say that I really hate this challenge too. Gave it about 20 goes last night and my highest finish (by two spots) was 8th. I guess I'll try the 0/0 brakes and ABS 10 and see if that helps. I have a wheel which I figured would make things easier... but it hasn't helped much.

One word...draft. Until you learn the draft you will never win NASCAR @ Daytona!

You gotta be accurate with your drafting, it makes all the difference. Maybe this vid helps.

A textbook run, almost identical to how I got it. Plus it's learning which cars to avoid contact with as some the slightest brush will get you DQ'd, and others you can just about get away with belting the driver with a crowbar and kicking his panels in. Like the run at Indy, it's about learning the AI patterns. DS3 here as well, and once you get the hang of it it's not that bad. Frustrating to get there though
