Learning how to not oversteer

Really, I think its a problem of entering corners too fast.

I drive an RX-7 (Upgraded to the max, except for the suspension which is still stock, and I'm using the Super-Soft T8 tires, ends up just over 700 horsepower) in GT3, and I have a problem with taking corners. I always tend to hit the outside wall. What happens is, I'm braking the enter the turn and then begin turning, but the car doesn't end up turning that much. Instead it just starts to spin. If I countersteer, it turns a bit more (Am I drifting now?) and begins following the turn, but at too wide an arc and I hit the outside wall.

Am I simply just taking corners too fast? Or is there something else I should change? If I'm simply entering corners too fast, can anyone give me any tips to get me out of the habit of entering turns to quickly?

Sometimes, though, I manage to drift through a corner just perfectly this way, but I have a hard time countersteering the correct amount. I either do it too much, causing me to straighten out and then understeer into the outer wall, or I don't do enough and begin to spin out. Any tips on that?
 
Take a look through here. and upgrade your suspension. 700hp and a stock suspension is never going to work out well for anyone. It's damn near impossible to drive.
 
The steering on those rotors suck. Try other cars if you can. Otherwise keep working on your rotary POS.

Off topic - You are a Maths freak. Aren't you? I've been tought that Soh Cah Toa ****. It's so friggin boring.

Maybe TCS & ASM will help a little.

I'm using a TCS of 1. That helped a LOT for stability. I'd rather not set it higher, as there are time when allowing the back tires to spin has helped me out.

Whenever I think of ASM, I think of the inability to maneuver well. Maybe I should try a setting of 1 or something and try it out.

The problem is, I'm not sure what I should do with the suspension. I mean, I know what everything does (ie, I know if I give the rear a bit of toe in, oversteer will be reduced, and giving a bit of negative camber can help cornering) but I'm not really sure exactly what I should do. How much toe in is too much? How much negative camber should I use?

And don't diss the rotaries! I love my RX-7! If I had the money, I'd buy a REAL one.
 
First, go buy a full suspension. Then, click on the link in post #2.

Read the information carefully, then experiment with it. :)

At 700 hp I'd put tcs up to 2, personally...Then there's the whole steering thing. Remember to brake in a straight line. If you do all your braking in a straight line, you won't be sliding out on corner entry. Then, lay off the gas a bit when coming out so you don't slide when coming out of th corner. And.....when you get ur suspension, set up a stiff front end and soft rear if you still oversteer too much.

I really don't think TCS 1 on a 700ps car is good... my cars which have that power have a TCS of 2 or 3...

A little ASM will also be helpful when you are at a very fast speed.
(Especially at the chain little corners on Complex String.)
 
I don't get why everyone says that you should change cars. From what I've heard/seen/experienced, the RX-7 is one of the best handling cars in the game. Granted, it's not a race car, so it won't handle 700 hp very well. But, it should handle it at least as well as a supra, skyline, camaro, mustang, or other car in the same range. I'd say that it's just fine to stick to the RX-7 for now and just play with settings. And as always....just try to drive smoothly. Straighter lines are good(er).

haha, great wording man... i love it. Anyways, it's my first post in the main forum so hope i don't embarass too much, but ok, like everyone said... you need a new suspension. There is a lot os setting information around on gtplanet, for example, in the gt3 section... in the settings sub-forum, there is a sticky. That helps, and well, about your corner.. i think this might be what is happening

First is... when trail braking, (braking and entering the corner at the same time) any car on stock suspension in my experience will understeer quite heavily as long as the brakes are on. This is somewhat counter-intuitive for me because if brakes are on, the front wheels should have more traction, allowing for better cornering... but yes, if its just spinning, get a feel for when the car starts to spin, and a split second before, release brakes all together, but don't get on the gas, that'll cause a spin-out

and.. about the drifting... the weight transfer is key... if you feel like your spinning, getting off the throttle will shift the weight to the front wheels, giving them much better grip and will keep you on your line aroudn the corner and not into the outer wall. Since the rx-7 is fr, throttle control is the key if you ever feel your tyres start to slip.

last thing about your entry speed is to look for things to help you find out when to start braking! Fr's generally cannot handle excessive trail braking or they will spin out. Lets hope some of this info was helpful and that i haven't gotten my racing ideas/physics all wrong. if i did, let me know everyone!

Alright, I installed the full customization suspension and used some settings I found on another thread (Don't remember what thread, but it's really old) for grip driving on the RX-7. I've also started braking a lot sooner.

Now, I can do nearly flawless (Flawless meaning not driving off the road) runs on Complex String, going through the slalom at over 100 mph. My record time on Complex String is 4:18. The area I need the most improvement on is the series of 90' corners. I gotta just keep practicing that to find the quickest way through it. I should take the advice and increase the TCS to 2 or 3, because a lot of my problems in that section come from hitting the gas after braking. I find myself often shifting into a higher-than-normal gear to control my acceleration and make sure the tires (Why do people keep spelling it "tyres" ? Is that a european thing?) don't start spinning. A higher TCS would probably also help me a lot in the beginning of the series of turns after the 90' series. Trying to turn without spinning in 1st or 2nd gear is nearly impossible without delicate feathering of the throttle.

I don't plan on ever using ASM. I've never been sure exactly what it does and so I can never predict exactly when its going to kick in and what its going to do. Whenever I use it, I tend to understeer heavily, and I'd rather have a slight oversteer than a massive understeer.
 
I've tried an ASM of 1 many times. It worked well.
But after all, good settings must match the driver's habit. :)
 
Ok, i've heard alot of different things on this site and im sure you have your own ideas about vehicle physics and tunings. Without going into the deep details lets start at the begining. cornering is defined as a constant deviation from a strait path, in other words, rotation. so in essence cornering is the act of inducing controlled instability. as you allready stated you want a bit of oversteer in a race car. that means you want the rear tiers to break fee just before the fronts so that in cornering the front tiers pull you toward the inside while the rears slide to the outside. (but to an ever so tiny, impercievable degree) A phenominon you've ben experiencing to an exagerated degree. you have to balance the grip between the front and rear based on weight distibution and the size of the contact patch so yes you need a tuneable suspension. the purpose of stiffening the springs is to reduce body roll because body roll produces weight transfer, and weight transfer produces body roll. its a viscious cycle. think about it. if you hold a board in your hand and tilt one end up you can feel that the low end is heavier. the force of inertia attempting to pull the vehicle back into a strait line causes weight to shift off the inside springs and onto the outside springs causing them to expand and compress respectivly. this reflects as the body leaning to the outside further removing weight from the inside and loading the outside. the goal is to maintain equal weight between the inside and outside because weight over the tier increases its traction. when both wheels are equaly loaded we have the most available traction to pull against the lateral acceleration in cornering. stiffening the springs makes it to were the weight over the spring makes less difference to its extension. as the initial weight shifts the springs change less stoping the body roll and the viscious cycle, keeping the tiers loaded more equally. Wow ok now back to the balancing thing. basicly as per the spiel above, the stiffer the springs the more traction that end of the vehicle will have. So, assuming a 50/50 weight distribution you want to set the rear springs slightly softer than the fronts. this will do two things for you. one, it will stop nasty spinning caused simply by the rear having way less grip than the front, and/or cause more weight to be transfered to the rear during acceleration, loading the rear tiers and helping to put all that power down. (which is probably your problem if you end up spinning when you get on the gas. dont worry about the dampers, you only need to adjust those once you get into the really radical spring rates, like 15 to 20 lb/in. leave the camber and toe alone. ok so much for leaving out the deep details but belive me i could have dove in even deeper. its har to talk about vehicle physics without explaining it out. I hope theirs not like a word count limit on posts or annything. :nervous:
 
You are just going in too fast. Make sure you take a nice line and brake before u turn in.

RX-7 handles awesome. 700HP is alot for stock suspension but still driveable.

I would set your TCS to 1 and ASM 0 (or 2 if you don't like to oversteer.)
 
Hmm, if you are expecting oversteer, you could try turning in a little later than you usually do? Just an idea.

That way if the car gets sideways, you will be less side-on to the track than if you take an early turn in, and you will have more time to recover.

It sounds like you are having trouble with the finesse of steering inputs while turning into the corner. Usually one can get away with an early turn in by kind of 'coaxing' the car into the corner, this often requires you to be smoother on the steering, and do things in stages rather than suddenly. But the advantage is that using this way you can kind of brake 'into' the corner, so you can brake later and gain time in the braking zone, and still take the corner quickly as long as you have the car turning well before you reach the apex.

But if you brake a little earlier, take a wider turn in, you can get away with more violent steering, and still take the corner in a smooth, fast, manner. You will lose time on the way in, but you will probably gain some on the exit, simply because you can get your foot down sooner.

Also good advice is to come off the brakes smoothly. You will unsettle the car less. And make sure you keep some throttle input going as you take the corner, this means you will have less work to do with the steering, and again can allow you to be smoother. At the end of the day, being smooth (smooth = fast as you aren't really drifting, I assume you are simply sliding a bit) is as much about how you use the throttle and brakes as about how you steer the car. If you only use the steering to keep a good line, and don't pay much attention to brakes or acceleration, you will find it hard to be smooth in corners.

Yes! Yes! Been there, done that! Turned my hair three shades whiter doing it too. Talk about a slug on an ice skating rink! Three attempts, finally won!

To add to the topic, though, just remember that fast in = slow out, and slow in = fast out. Brake early, cruise through the apex on gentle throttle and nail it as you straighten up. Guaranteed to help.

BTW: check your brake settings, too. They can really unbalance you, especially if you're trail braking.

take notice of peoples setting advise
i couldnt drift to say my life until i found this forum i went through the setting with a fine toothed comb
what a difference now i can drift with the best ! 👍
i was confusing at first but it all came together
if peeps tell ya to change car stick to your guns until you have had enough
