Leaving your PS2 on

Hi!

I signed up today for these forums, but I've been lurking for a while ;)

Anyway, I've noticed that people are generally afraid to leave their PS2 on for more than a day? Why is this?

Are there any side-effects like heat, scratches in your CD, parts breaking - that's related to too much usage?

I've never cared at all how long my PS2 is on - and at the moment it's been on straight for about 5 days, as I'm in the middle of the Nurburgring 24 hour endurance. I think my 'record' is closer to 10-11 days, but even then I didn't notice anything "strange" in my PS2s behaviour.

Please enlighten me people! :)

I've noticed absolutely nothing, but then again i've left it on for the 3 24hr races only up to this point. (not consecutively)

i think if ur fan inside is working fine which you can feel, there shouldnt be any heat problems or any others, i dont think u would be doing your PS2 any favours by leavin it on for 10-11 days straight!

Welcome to the Planet! I was a long-time lurker until recently too. Feels good to finally add my voice to the site.

I think the current issue with leaving the PS2 on for a long time is actually focused on the new SLIM PS2 model. There should be threads on this elsewhere on the site, since I remember browsing them before. Apparently the slim models don't have sufficient cooling capability. My old PS2 has never had an issue with heat. But then again, if things are correctly cooled I actually believe that it is harder on the hardware when you turn it on and off all the time. It's quite literally giving an electrical shock to the components every time they are turned on. But that's just my opinion. :sly:

Do you have the slim model?

Maybe others can help clarify this or point you in the correct direction for a similar thread. I'll look around for the thread, but I am short on browsing time today...

As long as it's well ventilated it's fine. The process of turning the thing on and off probably does more damage than leaving it on constantly.

Thanks for your replies :)

I like your way of thinking, hehe :)
Come to think of it, when my PS2 was on for more than 10 days, I noticed some slowdowns/gfx lag in GTA:SA (which is the game I was playing at the time). Maybe it had something to do with the internal (virtual?) memory banks - I'm not an hardware expert when it comes to the PS. I do know, though, that my PC doesn't like to be kept on more than a week, as things starts to slow down.

Oh, btw, I don't have the slim model, I bought my PS2 in England about 2.5 years ago, and it's the standard black model.

Ya prolly shouldn't leave it for too long, as GT4 does run it at its peak, or so I assume. Also, it can get fairly hot if not properly ventilated, and it does contain alot of plastic, and the last time I looked, those two didn't go well. The disks too are sensitive to high tempatures, so a good rule of thumb would be to not leave it on for a super long time.

Being in a constant state is best for electronics. Like Race Idiot said, as long as it is ventilated you will be fine. I think PS or someone left their PS2 on for four days straight playing GTA:SA, you will be fine.

Shutting the PS2 down and powering it back up and shutting it down and powering it back up and so on will do infinitely more damage to it than leaving it on will.

lol. just dont be like a friend of mine and leave vice city on for a few hours paused with the tv on. his nice tv now has the map burnt into it. :dopey:

The prblems with inadequate cooling center around the slim PS2 because it has no fan. It relies on air flow in the room to keep it cool and naturaly the level of air flow has a tendancy to vary from room to room. Get a slim PS2 in a room with prety much stagnant air and leave it on for a day, what do you have? lets just say you may as well add a marshmellow and some chocolate to the silicon wafer and have your self a smore.

[EDIT]
Let it cool first though.

I've left my slimline on for about 3 days without any problems. There's nothing blocking access to the air and the air is pretty still (I don't have a/c, forced air heat, or any kind of fan running yet).

if you leave it on to long the laser gets dirty because the dirt hairs and dust melt because of the imense heat but you can easely wipe it off again

so no there isn´t a problem leaving it on to long

ure PS2 can go down when u step on it (like i dit when i tried to break my fal)

no i havent got any porb whit my ps2 but my longest stay on time is 3 a 4 days i dont think it can hurt

You don't have to worry as long as you haven't got a PStwo "slimline" like me. That gets hot to quickly. BIG ps2 is fine.

The Slim PS2 does have a fan, as Geeky1 notes in the linked thread. I can attest to this, as it screams away every once in a while while playing...

Computers are meant to be left on for long periods. I have a server at home that has been on for almost 2 years, except for short periods of maintenance. The PS2 is just a computer. Heat is the only possible problem, so make sure the fan is not obstructed, either by something too close or by dirt and dust. I've had mine on for up to 4 days and the case doesn't even get warm (I have the old style box, BTW).

I have left it on 24 hours a day for almost a month now. I have it lplugged into my battery backup/surge protector that my 'puter and aquarium is plugged into. I have my old PS2 hooked up the same way, when gt3 came out it was almost two months before it ever went off; that console has since been moved into the kids room and they use it still for movies and games - not a lick of problems. I was worried about over heating as I kept it on the carpet, but I've since moved it and keep it upright, still no problems......

My parents always bicth about it so I turn it off when I'm done using it except for the 24 hour endurance races, then i let it stay on B-spec all night..then turn it off in the morning

wow, 10-11 days? I did the 24 hr. Lemans race, had my ps2 on for, well, 24 hrs., had no problem with mine. But 10 -11 days? Despite being a not so great performance system, Im surpirsed the ps2 can stay on for that long.

As stated before, it is best for electronical devices can stay in a constant state, and they can do so for an amazingly long time. All the PS2 is is a computer, and you can generally get about 2 months uptime from even the crappy computers.

my reckord was .....5days strait doing the mile glitch in txr3 lol my ps2 has never ever been warm, the only problem is when it stoped reading gt4...then a cleaned and ajusted every thing lol. mabey the slims have a problem, but install a 5$ computerfan its fixed

So!

which console is better for 24h endurance races? Old PS2 or PS2 Slimline?

Thanks!

.. left my PS2 on for a week and my B-spec driver called "sharon" still couldn't get out of the sand trap.......... lol
