I had my car picked out: a Nutria 1998 Mercedes-Benz 600 SL in the used lot. No five litre V8 for me; I wanted the six litre V12! The heated leather seats were still buttery smooth and the air suspension rubbed out the imperfections on highways. The smooth 394 hp V12 powerplant still had its confident and reassuring growl as it pulled two tons of German technology effortlessly. Despite my attempts, the dealer would not accept my fire-truck red Chevrolet Silverado SST Concept as trade-in, so I handed him the full 120,000 cr. and drove off in my new ride "Nutella" with B-Beatrice following in the truck.

It was not long before the oil pressure light came on. Thankfully only a 50 cr. oil change at GT Auto was needed; the old carcinogenic muck came out and golden GT Auto "special formula" went in. I still wonder how the technician managed to fill the oil from underneath the car. While I was there, I decided to have my car professionally detailed for some extra horsepower. I noticed the sport button for the air suspension stopped working ages ago and the car rolled in turns, so I had the system replaced with a conventional coil spring suspension.

Having all the little bugs in my car sorted out, I decided to look at Mercedes-Benz sponsored races. From what I read, I thought Legend of Silver Arrow would be easy. However, someone forgot to mention the SLR McLaren.

I started with Opera Paris since I finished it in the previous VW GTi Cup. I was not used to the heft of my car. The McLaren started in first and unsurprisingly finished in first. Even the Avantgarde fought me tooth and nail. :ouch: After several attempts, I was able to win after the McLaren got stuck behind two AMGs; I think they were tired of being left in the dust.

Fuji Speedway was a pain. Starting at fifth position, the McLaren would speed by the others and into first place. I found that having the McLaren start in fourth caused it to be stuck behind two blockers for a short while. However, the McLaren would not be stuck for long and blazed ahead for a nine second victory.

I needed more speed! The Mercedes-Benz tuning shop sold me...

stage 1 NA tuning, then
stage 2 NA tuning
racing chip
fully-customized gearbox
triple-plate clutch
racing flywheel
carbon driveshaft
brake controller

... but even with 500 hp it was over once the McLaren blew past me. I contemplated doing the first stage of weight reduction for 300 kg of dead weight, but "Nutella" was a Mercedes! Stripping out the climate control unit, the leather seats, the carpeting, the navigation system, etc. felt wrong even if the thing weighed more than a M5. A wing would look horrid.

I got lucky though. With the McLaren starting in fourth, I was able to speed up and brake to second place behind the CL 55 AMG at the first turn. Meanwhile the McLaren wedged behind the E 55 AMG with the 190E Evo II following. The Avantgarde took time to soak in the sights.

At Turn 3, I veered onto the rumble strips to avoid the belligerent CL 55 AMG, but got nicked in the rear slightly. At Turn 6, the E 55 AMG passed the CL 55 AMG. It did not take long before the McLaren slipped by the CL 55 AMG at Turn 8 and the E 55 AMG at Turn 9.

On the straight, I watched my rear-view mirror as the silver speck in the distance got closer, closer, and CLOSER. I panicked at Turn 3, cutting into the dirt on the right and then off to the grass on the left, and lost speed. I expected the McLaren to pass like the ten times before, but he did not.

Luckily, I could turn somewhat better than the McLaren and managed to gain a bit of distance by Turn 8. But once on the straight, the McLaren again closed to spitting distance. I heard McLaren's supercharger whine as I struggled to block. I felt a thump as the strong but lightweight carbon fibre body of the McLaren nudged two tons of 600 SL forwards. I was beginning to regret my decision about keeping all the German gizmos. For the final lap, I was able to keep better control through turns 3 and 7. When I reached Turn 9, I planted my foot on the gas and veered towards the middle. Even without the slipstream, the McLaren closed in. I veered back to block as I wished for more power! Somehow I passed the finish line at 5:16:160. The McLaren passed by Nutella about a second later.

The Avantgarde was last seen around Turn 8. :)

I'm getting clobbered on the Nurburgring though. B-Beatrice is a better driver, but she cannot pass the others very well. Battle skill of 83 does not seem to help.

Nice first report! 👍 +Rep (check the little red check mark at the top right of your post for comments! ;))

Definitely stick to driving these races yourself rather than having Beatrice do the work for you, but, it's pretty well impossible to block the McLaren for an entire lap of the Nurburgring, as you mention.
Unless you're worried about carrying off a high A-spec points tally, then the simple answer is to enter/exit the race (without starting the race so that you don't waste game days) a few times until you come across a lineup without the McLaren present. This way you'll probably be able to strip off some of the extra modifications that you've added and still have an enjoyable race with the other "Tortoises", without worrying about keeping up with the McLaren "Hare"!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks!

I tried reentering the race several times to find a grid without the McLaren, but my thumbs started getting tired. At that point, it felt like cheating. ;)

...and then if you find a grid without a McLaren, the race will all a sudden feel easy. :grumpy: :indiff:

Anyways, good stuff. :) I name some of my cars, too. 👍 Haven't done the Silver Arrow races yet tho.

True, and funny. I did this race in a Mercedes 300SL Coupe, but it was tuned, spoiling the fun somewhat, but not by much. I still lost...

Nice report, hamstrings. Look forward to the Nurburgring.

Ack! I just realized how it was impossible to fill the motor oil from under the car!

Nice going there hamstrings. Welcome to this neck of the woods.
Good race report. Nice reading! + rep

AMG. ;)
