CHAPTER 1
A thousand galloping horses..., infinite torque..., raw sound...
Jay woke up with a start, the sound of the Dodge Viper he had just been dreaming of driving. His head immediately sank to the dusty floor of GT Auto after he had woken up.
He felt like he had been sitting on hard stone all night... and he basically had been. He had always dreamed of being a racecar driver, and he was well on his way. But the labor work had to come first.
"First you work, then you play," said his late grandfather consistently, every day. Those words still rang true and Jay's head as he gathered his wits about him, trying fruitlessly to collect himself and avert his thoughts from the Viper he had heard rumble.
He grabbed a nearby rag, which was absolutely filthy, and got up. There was a small sink over near the corner of his work cell, and he dampened the cloth and washed his face.
He started when he heard the sudden and crisp rip of an engine he recognized only from television... the Lamborghini Murcielago LP-670 SuperVeloce. He dropped the rag where he was and slid clumbsily around the room until he got to a large garage door, which he was about to open, yet slightly prematurely raised before his eyes to reveal a magnificent, completely new Lamborghini, painted an incredibly vibrant yellow.
Jay swore aloud when he saw the machine. Was he still dreaming? No, he didn't seem to, as he pinched himself rather violently. Beside the car was Leo Motorsports owner Mark Forester.
"Morning," he said, chuckling to himself. "Aren't you glad you came to volunteer?"
Jay swore again. "Heck, yeah! Where in the name of God did you get that beast?"
"Oh, a good friend let me borrow it. He said it needed a little fixing. But remember, you still have to work on the Alfa Romeo. I don't want to see you stealing looks at this thing and lagging off the job. No, you better do your duty. This, that is working on old cars like the Alfa Romeo Spider Duetto, will pay off in the long run. Don't worry. I've run teams for many years, and we'll go to LeMans someday."
