It seems the big three now have a new competitor, one of the worlds biggest PC makers has developed a console which will launch at the end of this year. Its called the eBOX (boy that was original!), and its first market aim is China where other consoles have trouble because they either are too expensive or they don't offer games suiting certain cultural tastes (like the problem Xbox has in Japan). Also there is a massive opportunity for console growth there.
It wont be limited to China though because this console will also be launched worldwide. Apparently it has been in development at Lenovo for quite a while and has its own dedicated spin off company to support it (eedoo). It has Kinect like functionality.
We don't much about it now but coming from Lenovo you know it wont be half baked. I seems to be going for the casual Wii market I could see this turning out like something you would expect the Wii2 to be. The president of eedoo has said the following statements...
“may be slightly lower than Microsoft’s Xbox, which retails for $299.99.”
“Our product is designed for family entertainment. Ebox may not have exquisite game graphics, or extensive violence, but it can inspire family members to get off the couch and get some exercise”
In addition to this news 16 global developers are signed up and the console will come with 30 free games bundled.
History shows us a long list of console train wrecks! Will it be suffer the same fate as all those other 'mistakes'? If China likes it probably not, I might even become the greatest selling console in history.
