Earlier today I bought the above mentioned car after reading on the master car list it could be race modified. I took it for a spin on Nurburgring and was almost shocked when I shifted into eighth gear!

What on Earth? Is it 7-geared before RM and then have one added or is it naturally 8-geared (and is it like that in real life - stupid question)?

How on Earth could you drive that in real life with so many gears? Is there a specific reason or did Lexus just decide to be 'different'?

Sorry for all the questions, and I guess I could Google the car but you guys are my 'Tesco Value Google', and what is a forum without threads and questions...

Yep, the Lexus IS-F has 8 gears in real life. The in-car dashboard computer allows you to choose how many gears you can use, but yes it does have 8 gears.

Ah so it's not just a standard stick-shift like in my Ford Focus then? 8 gears would be absolutely baffling :D

Sorry to bring up Top Gear (I know they're not the end all & be all of car reviewers) but I do remember Jeremy having a complaint about the gears on the IS-F, something about how it was always changing gears like it couldn't make up it's mind.

Yeah, in GT5 prologue it had 8 gears...

I wonder if that is on Youtube...

I heard that it had 8 gears on one of the Top Gear episodes, I still don't know why it has that many gears though.

Yep, it's an eight speed automatic transmission with a manual override in the form of up and down selectors on the gear lever and steering wheel paddles. Keep in mind though that it's not truly a paddle shift transmission like Ferraris and Volkswagen DSG's. There is still a regular torque converter. In other words, a slushbox as Clarkson would say.

And 8 gears aside, it is a great car, looks and sounds awesome. I bought one real early in the game and just won another one, which I promptly repainted. :)

one of the first cars with 8 gears, most newer Mercedes autos have 7 gears, even the california and 458's version of DSG comes with 7 gears.
If I'm not mistaken, the current bmw 7 series and lexus LS series also comes with 8 speed gearbox but they're not in the game.

That´s normal. With an automatic transmission, that is. Its really not necesary to have alot of gears, though. 6 well tuned gears are more than enough. Even 5, like the SLR.

Here is another one with 8 gears. Its been with us since GT4:

The next chrysler 300, Chargers and SUVS will soon have the 8sp autos. Having more gears helps with fuel economy. A 27 mpg 5spd SRT8 charger could possibly get 30mpg with the ZF 8 spd tranny.

i think a few more cars designed for fuel economy (kinda) have a new 8 speed, like i know the new vw toureg has an 8 speed, and knowing mercedes and bmw, some the s-classes and 7-series will probably have 8 speeds

Need to do some tuning to that Skyline (and probably the IS-F) to make any serious use of 8th gear. If you don't like your IS-F with 8 gears buy a 360 and Forza 3 as the car there has a 5 speed box! Bizarre as it is not even an option in real life!

The reason cars have so many gears at times is to give the cars more RPM upon shifting keeping torque and acceleration high. However, 8th gear in real life seems to be strictly for the 168mph 'limiter' it has.

The main reason for 8 gears is that those last ones can rev as low as 2000 rpm when doing 120mph / 200 km/h and therefore fuel economy is much better in constant speeds with strong engines.

I believe the IS-F Racing Concept only has 6 gears because most racing series don't allow anything beyond 6 gears. I think F1 is the only series that currently allows 7 speed gearboxes.

The IS-F is a pretty quick car, surprisingly. Easily competes with Maserati and BMW. Don't worry about it, too much, though. In real life, you'll usually never use beyond 3rd. Maybe 4th on the highway.

Usually the higher gears are more smoother and queiter. So as lexus and mercedes and bmw all being luxury brands, they usually have 7 gears for ultra comfortable highway driving.

Yep, lots of new BMW's have 8 speed transmissions now. 5 series, 7 series, the new X3 coming out in a few weeks...
It's mostly for fuel economy though, so it doesn't make it that exciting for a racing game. Not until we're allowed full gear ratio tuning anyways
The BMW transmission is made by ZF, I'm not sure who makes the Lexus box.

I just saw this car not to blong ago on battle of the super cars, being driven by taner foust. He commented that it had 8 gears. To bad I got torched by the m3 lol!
