The reason I ask is that I'm about to throw one against a wall.

You lot will all laugh at this, but I'm stuck on Licence B-8. I am one agonising hundredth (42.811) away from gold. I just can't beat that ghost! I always lose it in the final corner (when I don't hit stone cliffs trying to outrace the ghost). Any hints?

Why do I need to get 42.800 when NTSC folks only need 43.000 (in which case, I wouldn't be having this problem)?

 grrrr!

to answer your question they are pretty tough, just not invincible. I managaed to break mine by stepping on it and it snapped the right analog stick right off

They're not tough.

I've gone through five of them. My current one, infact, no longer rumbles, and has some loose plastic parts inside it. Not sure where they came from...

I think my best destruction, the reason why slips my mind, was I tossed it near ceiling height, grabbed the cord, and did this lasso spin and shattered it on the floor. Two more spins, and 15mintues worth of shop vaccing, gave me much satisfaction.

The current one is soon to become the tinkers work piece. Radio shack has micro switches, that I'm going to attempt to incorporate for faster shifting. Loosen the springs on the analog sticks, and mold a better grip on it.

Of course that's in all my free time....

B-8: Skyline GT-R Vspec II (R32,J) ~ This course has many blind corners. The rocky stretch in the first part requires bold driving with no fear of the rocky cliffs. Use the technique of releasing the gas to turn the car. The speed out of the last left turn has a big effect on the time. The fastest line barely grazes the cliff when coming into the corner and lets out in the depths of the tunnel.

Looks like I got a 42.999 on this one. Not great considering the gold time was 43.000 but I imagine I quit as soon as I got gold and didn't worry about improving it. I've spent some time on Trial Mountain and could probably do a little better than that.

From doing it over a couple times I can only point to spots where I found some extra time over where the racing lines indicate. I was pretty stubborn when doing some of these license test my own way and only found one test where sticking strictly to the racing line indicated in the game was more beneficial than taking a few liberties.

1. I found that if you start with the car at or around 6K rpms you'll get the most decent and consistent start. Hold the RPMs at 6k while the countdown's on then go to full throttle right at the buzzer. You'll go from 6K and bog a little to 4K or so with minimal tire spin. The idea is to keep the engine within it's maximum torque power band for take off.

2. The first turn. I like to cut into the inside sooner and deeper than the line indicates. If you got a great start, your car won't bog as you take this deep cutting line right next to the inside wall. This also enables you to spend nearly no effort getting the car straight and on the extreme edge to setup for the next turn which pretty much goes as indicated.

3. The fist rock turn. The key to this turn is to simply get lucky and not snag the front end of the car on the inside of the turn. You should be on the gas before you hit the apex, but don't mash the gas until you've "set" the car's disposition, or you'll just push through and hit the rocks on the outside rock on the left.

4. The second rock turn. If at all possible you want to come out of this turn to the right of the indicated line, it helps get setup for the final turn. To do it you need to properly manage the weight distribution of the car and get it centered. Like the beginning text of the test says, use the technique of letting off the gas to help get the car properly turning through the corners. This technique is very important for this and the last turns in the test.

5. The swinging tunnel yellow paint tunnel turn. The bottom line on this is that the sooner you get the car straight, the sooner you'll start gaining good speed out of the turn and the faster you will be going as you cross the finish line. I end up getting this one right about one in 15 or so tries, and odds are if you're fighting it, you didn't set up before the turn right. Entry is paramount to getting out of this one with the right attitude for good acceleration down the stretch. Like the first rock turn, go easy on the gas as you enter the first tunnel where you start the turn and set the car's disposition before mashing down hard and things should come together for you.

I hope this was helpful. I know it's hard to translate written suggestions into physical technique. There were a few tests I wanted to bash my controller on too, and just when I thought I'd gotten past all the hard ones a Tahiti Maze rally test made me freak out and smash my controller... I was literally 3 golds away from having them all when that happened. It's frustrating work and I think that whomever actually has the discipline to sit down and complete them all really should get a gold frickin' medal!

Well, they're tough, but I haven't tried the wall trick.

I've been going for all golds, and B8 was fairly frustrating for a while. Looks like Dolbytone gave a nice list.

I think it also helped to use a manual transmission and rev the 'ell out of the thing early on, keeping the torque up and using the throttle to push understeer a bit. Then shifet out of the tunnel.

The most important thing is to set up so you're accelerating as long as possible at the end. You should be on the throttle from at least the apex of your turn in the tunnel until the finish line. Doing that without hitting anything is the tough part. If you haven't, you might want to watch the demo from the in-car view a few times.

Hope that helps some.

I got a 0'42.748 on my about my eighth try. (second gamesave)

On my first gamesave it took me well over an hour to get it Gold.

It's not impossible mate. :)

Damn it!

In the PAL world, the gold time for this licence test is 42.800. My ghost was 42.817. Tonight, I managed to beat it. I was yelling "come on, come on" as I hurtled towards the line. Then I saw the time. 42.807. ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!

Oh the pain :banghead:

Oh man, nothing worse than incrementally halving the distance to a gold time. I just hope you don't end up tying it, now that's frustrating.

Yeah, I do. It's good in some ways (like it's behind you in the final straight and you switch to outside view to see how far behind). But it's also a pain when it's just a shade in front of you, can be distracting. But all things considered, it's a mark, a line in the sand that you must cross.

Its getting too expensive for me to break controllers when I get pissed off so I have to find new ways to take away my anger.

I DID IT!

42.694! :burnout:

It's all in the final corner. As long as you are clean through the earlier sections, making the final corner is crucial! I hit it just right. Before, I think I was trying too hard and either clipping the end of the tunnel (turning too soon) or scuffing the wall of the second tunnel as the corner levelled out (not letting off the gas enough at the entrance to the first tunnel).

I used the 18,000 starting money to tune up the MX-5 1.8i and have won 3 series already (Sunday, Clubman and Roadster). They really like giving out MX5s as prizes, got three of them now (and a Trueno).

Thanks once again for all your help :D , now for the A licence :shades:

I bought the GT3 bundle in August 2001, I got all gold in July 2002. What's cool about that? I know that it won't take that much time to get all gold for the next Gran Turismo game, because I'm much more skilled than before!

I wish you good luck

After reading this thread, I realized that the GT3 I own (I no longer have to borrow my friend's) has the more lenient gold times for the licenses (the USA version).

So, I went back to B8 and tried to beat 42.800...

About 3 hours later, I got 4 gold times, NONE of which would've gotten me gold on the other version. My best was 42.894, still almost .1 away...

So I gotta give BIG MAD CRAZY STUPID RESPECT to all and any who are nutty enough to go for all golds on the version you have! Simply judging by how long it took me to get .095 away, I'd say it would've taken me AT LEAST 3 *MORE* WEEKS... provided I didn't smash my console or controller first.

Fortunately, this doesn't fully invalidate my quest for my "perfect" gamesave. PHEW! I didn't use no gameshark, and I didn't kill the gold times, but I still put in the time and thumbpain to get them (the license golds) legitimately.

As a note on this particular test (B8)...

For automatic transmissions, I found it very crucial to supress upshift by using the L2 button for the first turn (into/through the tunnel). Doing so allowed me to maintain the high 60's, and even low 70's while going through the turn. I'd finally release L2 (allowing it to shift into 3rd) when the car straightened out, AND the tarmac became level.

The only other advice I can offer is this...

Get a friend in the USA to buy you a GT3, so you can have dem golds!! ;]

Best of luck to you. Have a great drive!

One of my dual shocks is held together with scotch tape its that buggered having been through the wars

but amazinly enough it still works perfectly except maybe for the vibration which is hell of a noisey due to all the parts flying around inside

I purchased an extra dual shock for 2player games. The one that came with the PS2 is the one i currently use. I would say they are really hard and durable. This one I have opened (to fix it after a hard hit) like three times. The left side is a lil bit shaky, I dont know what to put, maybe put some scotch type.

Yah, and everytime I run a rally race, the dualshock does as much noise as the sound of the tv.
