License test oddities?

I've been trying to get gold trophies for all the license tests and noticed some odd things along the way:

1) The instructions preach 'slow in, fast out', but on just about every single cornering test I notice there is no way you'll get gold unless you brake late according to the driving line, and also approach from a bit wide of the turn, ie. two wheels on the curb or grass. To me that says 'fast in, fast through, and fast out'.
Slow in, fast out = silver or bronze.

2) On one of the braking tests trying to get gold I was racing the ghost car from my previous best (but failed) attempt at gold. Both my car and the ghost car came to a stop at exactly the same time and position on the stopping grid, yet I got the gold. Is it possible the ghost gradually speeds up pushing you to do better? Anyone else noticed this?

3) I try again and again to get gold on a particular test with no result then finally on a seemingly otherwise unremarkable run I suddenly get the gold. I'd swear sometimes if you just grind it enough times it's as though the game gives in and decides 'okay, you've done it 100 times, here's a gold for you'. It's like the clock suddenly decides to slow down a bit to give you a break.

4) For the Super license in all the races there is no way you'll get gold unless you smash other cars for braking, cornering and taking out the rabbit...which is a h*ll of a way to teach good driving skills I say! (Good practice for online Dirty Nascar racing though...)

I always say "Slow in fast out, its a good start but its still slow in." & "practice makes permanent but only perfect practice makes perfect."

On the cornering tests it also seems to me that it helps to get a bit of a drift going to set yourself up for the apex and you can't achieve that with 'slow in'.

For all their faults I love the license tests, quite possibly the best innovation in racing games ever, it shows people with no driving acumen at all how to be a pro at the game. I hope they never get rid of them, it sets GT apart from other driving games.

I've been doing the tests the past couple of days and I have noticed that the smoother the lines, the faster you go. You want to maintain as little wheel-spin as possible. Following the driving line isn't always necessary. Many of the cornering tests feel a lot slower, but are faster. This is because you aren't always on the gas or brake and coast quite a bit to maintain full grip.

This is pretty much how it should be. Going onto the rumble strip only slows you down, certainly at Tsukuba and Rome.

You also don't need to smash the opponents in the special license tests. They are frustrating, true, but I managed it before the update that allowed a certain level of collision to slip by unpenalised. I can compare the two as my gamesave corrupted a few months later and I had to do them all over again.

In the Super licenses test you have to be aggressive to get gold that's why I got 10 gold in the Super licence tests.:gtpflag:

In my continuing quest for all golds in the license tests (1 more to go, whew!) here's what I've noticed. IA-2 I tired again and again and failed even though some runs looked as perfect as could be. I noticed every time I hit the finish line the timer would glitch ever so slightly. I would hit the line and the timer would very briefly pause as if finished at say 30:300, then b-r-r-r-p-t, it would suddenly- almost instantly tally up another 0.023 secs!! Now, 30.323 secs...silver. Grrr! Same thing with IB-1, after doing it what felt like hundreds of times it seemed to me the car would stop and the timer would continue briefly for another couple hundredths of a second before stopping. I tried this one for what seemed like many hundreds of times and the best I ever got was 14.945. I tired every trick online, hitting the imaginary wall, nudging the wall, gearing down, sliding sideways, going straight, all to no avail. Then on a new day after 4 or 5 casual tries...14.885! Nothing spectacular at all, an otherwise seemingly mediocre run with no wall contact or anything. I swear the game gives in to you after a certain number of tries through some means of giving you an advantage and I have a couple of theories: A) In one's initial tries the timer cheats you like I stated above and on those difficult tests where every thousandth of a second counts it adds a couple hundredths of a second until you reach a threshold number of tries. B) After a threshold number of tries the timer slows down a bit to give you the edge you need to gold. Far fetched you say? Consider this. In Online rooms there is the boost factor available. When it's set to high, and you are down by half a lap the car appears (according to the speedo) to be running at normal speeds but you still catch up to cars obviously going the same speed. In NASCAR this means while your speedo reads 210 mph, you must be doing 240 mph or so, OR, the clock is running slower for you while you are doing 210 mph, OR, the track is suddenly a bit shorter so there is definitely some physics bending going on somewhere. Get my drift?

I seem to recall, on a large number of these tests, the sample video shown didn't actually show the car meeting the gold requirement. Nice! ;)

In all honesty, I didn't really have any major difficulty on the Supers. The only one that gave me trouble was the Trial Mountain event in the Maserati Gran Turismo S, but that stemmed from my not using ABS. The ones that really gave me trouble were the Schumacher S in the Concept 1 Tii and the Indy Road Course esses in the Z34 (with forced Skid Recovery Force).
