I'm just downloading it now, but will have to go to work before it's done.

I got it by going into folding@home...

The internet seems unaware of it yet, as I can't find anything about it...👍

Seems Engadget has the news.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/18/life-with-playstation-begins-today/

After making a false start earlier today, Sony Computer Entertainment just announced the official, global launch of its free, Life with PlayStation PS3 service. Initially, Live Channel will deliver worldwide news and information such as weather and live camera images from 60 cities around the globe -- more interactive content will be delivered in time.

I started Folding a couple of hours ago & didn't see anything, I'll try again tomorrow & see what happens.

edit
Gizmodo has it too,

Speaking of Sony, PS3 users can now try out its new Life With Playstation service, which gives you instant access to real-time news and information in a format that's much more graphically intense than anything you'll get on Wii News. The program is works in conjunction with Folding@home, so you'll be helping Stanford researchers while you much around Life. Download it onto your system by selecting the Folding@Home icon under “Network” on the XMB, and check out the Playstation blog for an interesting video explaining the service's features.

Touché.

I think mainly just Google hasn't indexed things yet.

It's on the Playstation blog and the official forums aswell...

Some people have found the update doesn't show up unless you log out of your account and back in again if that helps?

Found it by going to the System Update tab. Didn't get a message when I turned on the console a few hours ago.

Got it, and to be honest it does work well (even if it is a straight copy of the only thing I like about the Wii).

I didnt realise its manatory as some people have managed to get it with the 2.43 update without being part of folding.

Life with Playstation & Folding@Home are one in the same. When using Life with Playstation, Folding@Home is running in the background.

Well finall got hold of it and I have to say for the amount of time it took them to make it I find it quite dissapointing...

Firstly its very vauge, I was expecting local city weather and detailed forcasts...something like BBC Weather, you cant choose every city and the cities that do have webcams are only stills and not live images, plus they are really small. It could have also done with favourite cities and also local times. But I guess more stuff will be added over time.

The tie in with folding is slightly sneaky of Sony I find because this app should be independent of folding, the roar of my fan after a while annoyed me so much I quit it, kinda defeats the purpose of the soothing music!

Your contibution to the folding network should be optional not mandatory, it would be like you having to fold to use Home or something! Its forcing people to use folding just to get features you are entitled to as a PS3 owner! madness!

Ive heard you can go back to standard folding view, I havent figured that out yet but after all this hype for LWPS its a real let down, for me anyway.. Dont know how much use its going to get!

If its for Folding@Home only then I'm not intrested. Way to ruin what could be a decent downloadable addition Sony 👎

I'm not sure how it would ruin it exactly?

When you run LWP Folding@home is in the background, unless told you would not even realise its running.

Personally I don't have a problem helping sort of a few folds while I browse the news.

Press and hold square then it will bring up a menu that lets you switch between Life with Playstation view & standard Folding@Home view.

It doesn't bother me because Folding@Home is contributing to finding cures for things such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.

I don't mind contributing to cancer research but I prefer to donate directly to an organisation rather than using folding, as I don't pay the electricity bill im am not in any position to run my PS3 longer than I need too. I would have liked to have used LWPS without folding but unfornately this is not the case... maybe Sony in future updates will offer settings to disable it if the user chooses to.

I wish I could change the news RSS feed. The Google "News" feed is pathetic. It's nice to know that the news all around the world is irrelevant.

Well it doesn't ruin the actual item itself, it more ruins the fact that I thought this would be something you could just access say whilst listening to music. Folding@Home is something I was not registered to due to the fact I never particularly was informed what it was, so I didn't register. Sure I signed up to it now, but only because I wanted to see what this Life With Playstation was like. As Robin said for himself, I myself don't pay the electricity bills and my parents moan if the PS3 is left on stand by let alone if it is turned on when neither me or my brother are playing it. I can't see myself using Life With Playstation. Personally.

I don't get why you think you have to laeve the PS3 on for long periods of time just because LWP and F@H are connected?

Nothing at all in how LWP and F@H are operating means that you are forced to o anything like this at all, to all intents you don't even need to look at the F@H side of it. You could simply use it to look at the news and weather and then shut it down, it would not make a jot of difference.

Personally if I'm listening to music I would still use the music player and visualisations, if I want to check the news and weather I will pop LWP on. Sorry but I just don't get the logic of why this ruins LWP at all, and I'm the one who pays the electric bill in my house.

I also don't understand what some folk are complaining about. I installed this during the lunch hour here, and I messed around with it a bit. I learned how to play by own music in the background, zoom in and out during the earth view, etc., but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to zoom in on the news articles.

Is this possible while in LWP, because I simply could not read the content of the few articles that I was interested in.....this is at 1080i on a 65in Mitsubishi.

(Ps: I know how to do this (zoom in/zoom out) while using the built-in web browser)

Press X when over the city, and navigate to the story and press X again.

TBH I'm not that interested in it, I was interested in folding at home some time ago, but lost that within my first two work units. so this new feature really isn't going to add anything to the playstation experience for me. Anyway I can get all of this stuff without using my PS3 so its not really a major thing.

It was pulled out if noone noticed. Sony said it was a accidental release. Anyhoo this means the full version is pretty ready.

Seems very odd to roll out something as potentially big as this in such a way - was it really a mistake? If so, someone will not be getting their Xmas bonus this year methinks!

Anyway, it looks great for the moment, but there's so much more they can (and hopefully will) do with it... still, a thumbs-up from me, even if I had to solely rely on ceiling_fan's post and this thread to know anything about it whatsoever!

I'm posting from the internet browser on it, looks nicer but no customization (text size, window size, etc) because it was just meant for the news but it takes you to a fully accessible Google.

From,
Chris.

Actually, that is exactly what I have done....several times, and it opens the article in its own window. The problem is that although the entire story may be visible, the text is too small for me to read. (is old :guilty:)

Ah, I see, hopefully they'll patch it so you can edit text size or zoom in.

Chris.

I never understood this - how do you accidentally release something across the entire PSN?...
