Not much news as of yet other than this could be considered as the ill fated 914 replacement. Could even use the 2.0T FSI out of the golf GTI.

And with thgat I shall leave you with this unofficial panamera picture.

I think it must be tough to design a small, light weight car and not make it look dumpy. Because I have not seen one that doesn't.

Except stuff with out a roof (e.g. Caterham).

That last one looks good, but it doesn't look like a four door.

I do like that 2nd design alot.

First one seems iffy (quality and design wise, possibly a carmag?), but the seocnd one is flippin' gorgeous. Stunning 👍

As for Elise fighter, they already have the Boxster, which is doing a fine job of leading ahead of the Lotus.

If they're going for the Lotus weight/power mentality, they need to get a less Porky design.

... pun intended

:p

The first sketch is really weird; way too much going on in that design. The second one looks alright though; but the back looks very strange.

And Porsche doesn't need an Elise fighter. The Boxster is selling very strong and caters to a different group of people than the Elise, which is more of a trackday car as opposed to the Boxster which is a much more well rounded car.

Hssent Porsche been talking about a successor to the 914 for quite some time now? I mean, I would love to see a "affordable" Porsche available, but when you consider that their cheapest model is well north of $40K USD, how much cheaper could a VW-designed model be?

That isn't a good Panamera design, as it will be a 4 door coupe, I think Porsche released a semi-official "statement of intent" type design a little while back.

The 914 type car would be sweet.

Make it a hardtop and call me interested.

I don't know if it's a good idea or not. The Boxter/Cayman vs. Exige is a close match to watch anyway, I got it in a magazine recently. I think it was a Car and Driver. The Cayman was plenty quicker, but they handled evenly. Maybe Exige vs. Box S is a closer performance comparison. But one is a hardtop, the other a convertible.
Anyway, I've read rumors of bringing back the 948 and 928 and stuff. They said the 948 would have a v8 with 400 or so horses. Bad idea. Did the 928 have a 4 cylinder? if it did bring that back with about 220 horses. Never mind, there's no competition for that. How 'bout they add the Panamera, with the Cayenne's V8 and turbo 8, and just leave the lineup with 4 models, eh?

The hardtop on the Exige is removable, but doing so voids the waranty for the roof, and looks goofy:

Actually owners are allowedto take the roof off their Exiges to enjoy some open top driving. Lotus just makes a point that having the roof off hinders the Aerodynamics of the car. And yeah... it does look a bit strange.

It's a bit pointless to compare cars like the Elise/Exige to the Box S/Cayman. The cars from each brand have completely different goals.

I was going to say, they can't make the car a targa and then tell you you can't take the roof off. But yeah, it look's odd, I remeber the first time I saw an Exige with the roof off, it was a MK I Exige, it looked really odd without the roof.

You are correct. I was hearing a rumor that I just checked up upon, which happened to be incorrect. Although it is registered as a coupe, and you could get into some insurance scrums if any problems came up with you driving a convertible.

Another rumor is that the US Exiges are shipped oversea without the roof on, and they are put on at the two Lotus USA port facilities, along with the Starshield film etc.

A fairer comparison would be the freshly-today announced Exige S, 218hp supercharged variant of the normal Exige.

Now let's count the Elise 111R variations:

Elise 111R
Elise 111R LSS (USA)
Elise 111R Sport Racer (UK)
Exige (USA/UK)
Exige 240R (UK)
Exige Cup (UK)
Exige Cup 240 (UK)
Exige S (UK)

Wow.

EDIT: l4s: the car isn't sold a targa, it is a coupe.

It's sold as a coupe, but it's still a targa by definition.
