There should be some sort of like a quote button on each quote. Instead of people always going "this" or "+1" and so on. another website im on has this feature.

Just a small suggestion i thought of that would make posting and browsing gtplanet a little bit better.

If I understand your suggestion, something like that will be coming to the site soon, but it's not supported by the forum software at this time.

I suspect you mean a "like" button. So that people can click it and, beneath the post, it says "x, y, z like this post" instead of just quoting the whole post and making a post of their own to say "+1".

Yes. thats what i mean.

Yep, saw that button on other forums, e.g. racedepartment.

I believe I've suggested the same thing a verrrrrrrrryyyyyyyy long time ago.

I think it'll be a good idea, but don't add any value to it (such as the rep system that people took advantage of).

Heh :p

Anyway, to the original point. Would it be a good idea to have a mark next to your names, stating how many likes you've gotten. It could gauge to some point how much of a valued person you are here on GTPlanet.
People will find a way to take advantage of it, you'll get pairs of members liking each other's posts no matter the content. So it won't be very accurate.

Jordan, I think XenoForo has a built-in 'like' system, and I think the layout's pretty good (especially since there's real time alerts to quotes, likes and mentions). Or do you prefer VB?

No. GTP already had a reputation system once. It was ultimately removed because it caused problems.

Why do we have to copy Facebook? If you want to use Facebook, go to Facebook.

Will there be a way to turn it off if we don't want to use it? I'm registered on another forum that uses a system like the ones being described here, and in the end, I stopped posting because I got private messages every time someone liked what I posted. All it did was clutter up my account.

It's pretty much like that on every forum that uses it. When left alone, there's usually a core group of members who will develop the ability to influence the attitude of the entire forum, and whatever they like is what gets posted. Whatever they don't like gets ridiculed, and the whole thing becomes a bloated mess feeding off itself as it reinforces its own stereotypes. I remember seeing it on another forum, and it became a competition among users to see what kind of reputation you could get. Then the administrators removed the feature, and the community responded so poorly that they made the stupid decision to bring it back with the ability to hand out negative reputation. The whole forum became a clique and, last I heard, it had to be shut down.

I sincerely hope there's a way to turn it off. I appreciate that some members would like this feature but I for one would not.

Especially if PMs/emails/notifications are sent every time a post is "liked".

We were headed in that direction right here on GT Planet with the rep system. That's why Jordan had the good sense to remove it.

I thought that the rep system (and "like" buttons) is a good idea at its core but it gets misused and abused.

Another forum I visit has this feature. It still doesn't stop the "+1", "me too", "I agree" etc posts.

Indeed - we already have a multiquote and an edit button, but it doesn't stop double-posts. Even when explained in the FAQ.

That's the reason it wasn't implemented when I suggested it.

No, people caused problems to it. It generally worked fine.

I'd imagine the notifications could be turned off, but like the rep system, there's no requirement to actually use it.

It's never going to be perfect, since there's going to be those who deserve the positive attention, those who don't, a small percentage of users who will log-roll each other, and those who will just like everything for the sake of more attention/back-scratching. But I'd guess that most people will moderate themselves, just as they do now. I guess we won't know exactly how it will pan out until it's unveiled.

On one hand, something that promotes positive reinforcement may motivate users towards making good posts, but on the other hand, there's going to be a slight trend towards "clique-by-click" that may become inevitable if liking limits aren't created (which we had during the Reputation Level/Quality Posts-era)...it's not possible to truly like everything unless you're Buddha or Jesus Christ.

I'm on another forum where there's a Like button and I hardly every use it.

I'm on another forum that has a system like that. But over there it's "Nods" because that's what motorbike riders do when they pass each other. :D
They also have a nod limit for either the day or week, can't remember which, it works pretty well and you can quickly tell who has actually made a quality post and who's just posted rubbish.

That's already happening at GTP as we speak. Certain members think their word is the law, act like it actually was that way, and simply steamroll everybody else because everybody else is wrong. Regardless of what's being discussed, if you disagree with them, you're wrong. You have no choice but to either back off or take the broadside. If you back off, they've won and the same thing continues, and if you take the broadside they can play their favourite game which is - surprise surprise - being right while everybody else is wrong.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the system gets abused if it's implemented. People are really imaginative when it comes to being a big name on an internet forum.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Even after a week of when I joined (September of last year) I could see this happening. Now it's even more obvious, I could give you quite a substantial list of members who do this, with a select few who seem to do it every single post.

This.

But that was to be expected, when a group of people (in this case a very large group) come together there are always people like that.

Not to sound stupid on this, but I have a question about the "like" button.

We all have heard that the "like" button on Facebook is contaminated with malware / spam, sore of a feeding frenzy for scammers who take advantage of the Javascript. Has Facebook cured this or is it still an issue ? I don't know, I don't Facebook and have not seen or heard of an update or fix about this.

If implemented - would it be on a different platform, or something more updated than what Facebook is using ?

I was on a forum with that had this. They had votes where if you had 5 or more votes you'd get a little notice on the bottom of your post. ["Popular" post - Well aren't you a special :censored:ing snowflake] And when you get -5 or more... you'd get a notice similar to the first one. ["Unpopular" post - Basically you're a 🤬] (It was a Minecraft/Gaming forum) Soon members of the community abused this system. Guess how? The forum had a Mumble chat server (I personally think we should get one) and people hung out there. If you disagreed with their opinions, however, they "rep-...ed" you, which meant that they'd get a bunch of people from the Mumble and continuously downvote all of your posts. Eventually the admins made it a firm rule that if anyone were to be found abusing this system, they'd be banned. In fact, some of the people that did this, regardless of how long they've been on the forums and how many people liked them beforehand, got banned initially as a warning to everyone.

I can't make any promises until the actual "Like" system comes out, but the staff will do its best to prevent harmful and willful abuses of GTPlanet's site functions.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but were the two main reasons people abused the Rep System: 1) People would -1'd anyone they didn't like and 2) Abused the +1 to get a bunch of Rep?

If we had a like button without a 'Total Likes' count on it, problem #1 would be solved because there isn't a -1, and problem #2 would be solved because there won't be any number to show off your total likes.

This could be easily avoided by not putting a -1 button into place.
