I know that there is some contention about limiting peole on this board. Registering to view and other such gripes.

After seeing that we've had a few brown-outs of GTP, it's affecting the site as a whole. I've noticed an influx of "guests"

Others have noted that the Guests are mainly bots scanning through the forum, looking for keywords for search engines.

While I'd not like to eliminate the guests, Is there a way to limit the amount of Guests? It would unfortunately block many new users, as the bots are a HUGE percentage of the guests. Say it's 200 bots of 250 guests, and 50 real people. If we were to limit it to 100 guests, that'd likely mean 98 bots and 2 people.

Is there a way to "reject" auto surfing bots? can we add meta tags to base forums to stop the bots from surfing through every thread? (I'm not certain that is the correct terminolgy, but then again, very few of you would know what a 5 ply membrane roofing for low slope roofing is)

Thanks,

AO

Well the bots are doing their job. Every time I search for something car related or gran turismo related, a post from this site comes up. Well, most of the time at least. The bot problem is probably only going to get worse as google and other large search engines get bigger. I think.

I find 5-ply membrane roofing to be overkill, but that's just me.

Edit: It seems I forgot how to spell just about every word in my limited vocabulary

That's exactly what I have planned to do once we get moved to the new server. See this thread for more info. :)

yes, a new server means more up-to-date technology, which means a higher gigahertz reading on the CPU, whih means more memory, which means a larger page file, which means a faster machine. that's actually the first question like that I've answered regarding the server on the matter of speed. usually it's "when will Jordan update the server?" (which I still get too often to count). What I'm curious about is technical specs for the server (e.g. memory, ram, OS, processor, processor-speed, # of disk-drives, etc.).

Thank God!!!!

The new server will make this site move faster, right?
Yes.

Our current server is an AMD Duron 1 Ghz, 512 MB of RAM, with a 20 GB hard drive, which is completely full. Our new server is a Intel Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz, 512 MB of RAM, with an 80 GB hard drive.

Will all these posts count after the site's fixed?
I'm sorry, but I don't understand your question.

Pentium 4 is much better than Duron in my opinion. :D Your 20 GB hard drive is FULL? WOAH!

Oh, yes, I'm updating post counts (post counts everywhere) right now.
