Linksys router problem

:grumpy:

Ive got a linksys wrt54g wireless router, hard wired to my computer. Earlier today i noticed i started getting a little popup in my tray that kept saying "a network cable has been unplugged" and it'd only stay up for a couple seconds and then go away, but it was doin it like every 30 seconds. So i checked all my cables, and decided to unplug the power for the cable modem and router and let it sit for about 15 seconds and then plugged them back in

When i did, my cable modem came back up fine, but my router did not. the power and diag lights flash on, then the rest of the lights flash on, then they go out, repeat. If i try to plug my computer back into the router, it gets a connection for split second, then drops, connection, drop, etc. Because of this, i cannot communicate w/ the router (as far as accessing the router homepage)

I'm thinking firmware is corrupt, but I cant get in to update it if i cant communicate w/ the router. Linksys had another way of doing it, but it says to download the tftp.exe program from thier ftp site or whatever, which i tried, and either their site is down, or i just cant get into it, SO i cant even get that program to update the firmware that way. Ive tried a hard reset on the router and that does nothing either.

Any suggestions?

Wouldn't be firmware, it's a hardware issue. Router's probably toast. Could be bad power supply, if you're lucky, and you could just get a new power brick (with the right voltage, amp rating, and connector.)

I have the same router, but I'm definitely not getting it as extreme as you. It maybe a different issue altogether. I'll quote most from what I posted on another forum:

Me
Ever since I got my new PS3 yesterday, the wireless has been really unreliable. Whenever you browse anything, whether using the network or not, the error pops up saying "You have lost communication with server. A DNS error has occured." I cannot remember the error code, or if that's even worded right, as the pop-up only appears very briefly. It seems to happen much worse when I'm playing something that isn't using the network, like offline in games, or demos like GTHD. I would ignore the problem, but it happens literally every 10 minutes or so, so if I do a race, my stats won't be uploaded to Polyphony's severs because I'm signed out. Sometimes it won't even sign me back in automatically, sometimes it does. While playing online gaming (MotorStorm, R:FOM), the connection is much more stable, because it can last up to an hour, but it does happen eventually, thus causing me to quit the match. My download speeds are as fast as they should be for downloads (4mb/s broadband), so it's definitely not a signal issue as far as I know (around 70-80% signal FYI)... Just the internet browser is VERY slow as times too, which doesn't make any sense.

Now, details of my network. I am with Virgin Broadband (yeah, I'm from the UK. If you need me to post on a more appropriate forum, tell me), with a cable modem and a WRT54G Linksys router. 3 computers are connected to the network - 2 being wireless, and my one being connected directly by USB. We also have an Xbox 360 which feeds wirelessly off the same router too. We have NEVER had any problems with all the machines running at once, apart from needing to open a couple of ports for Xbox Live. Nothing like the PS3's network issue has ever happened.

But, this is the interesting bit. Now with the PS3 connected, our network keeps going up and down now every 5/10 minutes or so on our computers, at exactly the same time as the PS3's does. It maybe a coincidence that something is wrong with the router/ISP, but it maybe a PS3 issue with it, so that's why I decided to post here, to see whether you guys think it is a PS3 issue or not - and maybe a solution with it.

I'm REALLY impressed with the console so far, by the way. It's a shame something like this is setting the experience back.

I just realised I actually haven't upgraded the firmware yet, so I think I'll give that a try. It's still on v1.00.2, when it's into the v4.**.** now... There are literally almost 100 fixes since the original firmware.

I honestly wouldn't bother finding a new transformer for it when the router in it's self is now dirt cheap (it happens, sadly...). If it's still under warranty, give linksys a call and tell them what's going on. If it's not, either buy one of the plentiful ones around the 'net or ask if they do repairs for a cost.

You could always try connecting to it with something wireless to see if it really is toast. You might also want to try leaving it unplugged somewhere cool for a few minutes and then trying again. (but don't copy me and put it in the fridge).

To be perfectly honest, I think it's probably done its time. In my experience, they tend to go after about 2 years of solid use. There are flukes, but generally if my router breaks after 1 year or so I just go and buy a new one. Plus technology will have improved since when you bought it.

(Oh, and sweet ride :D)

PLEASE don't do that unless you're sure the one the router downloads is newer. Mine screwed up after 2 days of ownership because the "latest firmware" it was installing was older than the stuff it came with.

Bah, took the risk anyway. :P It was clearly newer, as the latest firmware came out 16th January 2007, and we bought the router in 2005, and haven't touched it since... But now, the internet on the PS3 is almost as quick as a computer (and loading speedtest.net on my computer is much faster too), so I'm glad I done it. 👍

Just waiting to see if it fixes my issues with disconnecting, though. But it seems another modem reset this morning has fixed it anyway!

I left it unplugged all night and just plugged it back in. the power and diag are both just flashing at the same time. you guys really think its toast huh :indiff:

G.T. In my searching around last night i kept reading that older 1.00.2 firmware had some problems like you were describing, so that newer firmware should have fixed your problem. sounds like it did. you probably shouldnt experience anymore disconnecting w/ it.

wish my fix was as simple

Yeah....I think the routers toast. I just looked at it about 15 minutes ago and noticed all the lights were normal, so i plugged back into it, was able to get into the router page and update the firmware, but I had no internet connection thru it. Tried a different ethernet cable to connect the cable modem to the router, still nothing. The network piece was fine, i could even get into my 360 (which is hard wired to it also) and stream music from my computer and look at pics from my computer and stuff, but no internet connection. Same w/ our other computer thats wirelessly hooked up to it. In the network, but no internet. But then after about 10 minutes it died again and all the lights started flashing. So...i think its probably done
