Much is made of the Linux community being "Open Source". This means that you as a user have the power to change the source code, recompile, and enjoy the benefits of a fully-configured system, even down to source level.

So, Linux users: have you amended your source code, recompiled it, and successfully used the new code?

Please note, I am specifically excluding the following:
- Downloading and installing a new module or package (i.e. an RPM)
- Downloading and installing a new device driver

Do not vote unless you are an active Linux user

I have successfully downloaded and compiled source code modifications made by others. Thats me. I patched my kernel for ACPI and NTFS file systems in my last install. I also try to get most of my (commonly used) packages as source, since compiling on my machine will mean that they are optimized specifially for my CPU. A few times, I had to make slight modifictions to get the source code to compile, but 90% of the time I dont have the energy to wade through thousands of lines of code to find out why someone elses app won't compile for me.

I also write my own applications, but do not really modify existing projects.

I'm not going to vote, because I don't use Linux, but I will say that I do Open Source coding for LiteStep. Yeah, I know, not as involved as Linux, but it still takes a ton of time. In fact, I made my own theme from scratch. It's on my deviantart site, but that's besides the point.

I have also fixed many a theme that I have gotten elsewhere's. I'm working on a module that will allow LiteStep to boot with ObjectDock, a quicklaunch bar that's much like Macintosh's. I kind of like simulating other OS's, for instance Macintosh.

I Have Only Used Pre-Configured Packages.
Yeah, but i think i'll stop using linux for a while, mainly becuase my pc shutdown for no reason and linux corrupted my hdd, which it took a while too fix, but yeah.
