There are so many options and features in LBP, and while the in-game video guides are exceptionally well done, I have still come across quite a few things that are not clearly explained, and so I thought maybe a thread dedicated to help explaining many features, as well as offering tips and suggestions and even a FAQ might be a good idea.

The next three posts I'll use as a quick index linking to each FAQ submission, guide, tip, etc that you all post in this thread or from other sites that you think would be helpful to our GTP community.

Looks like a nice helpful thread here.

One question, can I use my save from the beta on the final version of the game? I got it today but my PS3 disk drive is messing around with me. But I don't really want to have to do all the tutorials again when I load it up.

Nope you star over from scratch.

I'll get this thing kick started with a "Guide" based on something that just recently came up.

How to send and receive "LittleBigPlanet Gifts" to your friends.

How to Send

First of all, a LittleBigPlanet Gift is an item that you have either made or collected while playing LBP that you send to a friend for them to use in their own levels, Pod, or while playing the game.

As far as I can tell, you can send any item you have created to your friends, but not all items you have collected, or been given to by someone else can be shared.

Some items that were created by others that have either been given to you as gifts, or found in prize bubbles in the levels they have created may have been "locked" so that they can only be used by the person that found them or who was given them.

In this way, it is possible to share items you have made or collected to just your friends, with the knowledge that they can't then share them with others. I'll explain this feature later on.

A quick way to find out if an item you have is locked and thus unable to be shared with someone else is to look at the thumbnail pic of that item. If you see a little padlock icon attached to the thumbnail of that item, then that tells you it's locked and only you can use it.

Now many items you collect in LBP are not sharable, like costumes. You can check to see if an item in your collection can be shared by highlighting it in the PopIt menu and then pressing the square button. This will bring up the menu options for that item:
  • Page 1 - Main Options
    • Heart/Unheart
    • Upload
    • Send To My Friend
    • Video (guide)
    • Delete

  • Page 2 - Sorting
    • Newset
    • Category
    • Theme

If on page 1, you do not see the option "Send To My Friend", then obviously this means this item cannot be shared. Simple enough? :)

However if you do see that option, then by pressing that you will now see a new menu with a list of all your friends, and at the top you'll see you'll have the option of whether or not you want to make this item Shareable.

If you leave it checked, then the person you send this item to can share it with others as well.

Now all you have to do is pick the person in your friends list to send the gift to. Keep in mind at this point, you are limited to sending a gift to only one person at a time. Hopefully in some future update MM will allow you to send the same gift to multiple people at the same time.

Once you select someone from your friends list, you'll now have the option of adding some text to the message. I HIGHLY recommend you take advantage of this, for reasons of which I'll explain later. For now though, I recommend you type in exactly what it is you are sending, instructions on how to add it, and where it will be located in their PopIt menu.

OK... now there's the question of how the recipient of these LittleBigPlanet Gifts can add them to their goodies bags... which one would hope is easy enough, but as it turns out MM didn't make it terribly obvious.

I will finish up your last post there, D-N.

How to receive LBP Gifts:

It shows up as an XMB message, but you can only read the message, not open the file, which shows as a Game Data attachmet.

  • So, you have to open it in game.
  • Once in the game hit START to bring up the pause menu.
  • Select LBP Messages.
  • Select View Messages.
  • This will show you all the unopened LBP Gift messages you have
  • Select one to open it and then select the Game Data attachment.
  • It will copy the file into your LBP Game Data files.
  • When it is finished it will give you a message saying that your LittleBigGift has been placed in whatever category it belongs to (stickers, objects, etc.).
