Earlier this year, we cut some cake and popped some champagne to celebrate Media Molecule’s sixth birthday! We’ve had an awesome time during the last six years, seeing how the experiment we started here in Guildford has grown, giving rise to a thriving LittleBigPlanet community. This year will be no different, filled with DLC, plus new experiments from the LBP family for you to play with.

You already know about the fantastic LBP work that Tarsier Studios and Double Eleven Studios are doing on LittleBigPlanet for PS Vita, and now we are delighted to announce today a new LBP collaboration with the hugely talented team at United Front Games who will be leading a new project called LittleBigPlanet Karting! We’ve all seen that UFG has a wealth of racing experience and they’re also intimately familiar with LBP’s cornerstones of “Play, Create, Share.” With LBP’s powerful and diverse toolset in their capable hands, LittleBigPlanet Karting is sure to be an adventure that both LBP fans and kart-racing fans alike will enjoy! We are eager to see what you think of this union and especially excited to see what happens now that you can create in a 3D environment — it’s the start of a whole new LBP world! Have a look at the debut trailer to see for yourself.

Thank you to everyone at Media Molecule, we greatly appreciate the warm welcome into the LittleBigPlanet family. The team here at United Front Games has long been huge fans of LBP and all of the exceptional work done by everyone at Mm. Sackboy has become one of the iconic gaming characters of this generation and to have the opportunity to make a LittleBigPlanet game ourselves is truly an honor.

It has been a joy to collaborate with all of the folks at Mm. Since the project’s inception, they have been great partners in getting to where we are today. Looking ahead, we can’t wait for all of the LBP fans out there to get their hands on LittleBigPlanet Karting. The LBP community is unparalleled in the gaming world for the passion and creativity they bring and it’s going to be exciting to see where they’re able to take this new journey for Sackboy.

Our goal with LBP Karting has been fairly simple – provide a fast-paced experience that captures the best of classic karting gameplay, married with the unbridled creativity of LBP. This new adventure will be accessible to players of all ages and have all of the variety necessary to satisfy both the hardcore and more casual players.

This is an LBP game, so we could never talk about it without mentioning the Create tools. LBP Karting is set in an entirely 3D world that will enable players to create rich and varied gameplay experiences. Tons of familiar LBP gadgets will be present, along with a new toolbox specifically tailored to allow for building in LBP Karting’s 3D world. Along with fan-favorite racing and battle modes, players will be able to modify the rules of the game itself to create completely new modes and challenges. All of this is wrapped up in a community experience that should have LBP fans feeling right at home.

Well, that’s all for now, but we’re looking forward to sharing more news on this exciting new game in the coming weeks so stay tuned for more info and get ready for the new world of LittleBigPlanet Karting in 2012!

That's more like it! MNR was lacking a bit of polish, hopefully with Media Molecule on board it can finish the job off. Looking forward to it.

Don't we already have LBP with wheels?

ModNation?
Tree'd by dhandes. I'm guess you could say that ModNation has LBP elements, and LBPK has MNR elements :indiff:

The thing with MNR was that they were hoping the creation side of it, would keep it fresh. It then turned out the creation side was poor, cumbersome and fiddly.
LBP creation is easy to get simple things done efficiently, yet rewards spending time with it.

Hmmm... I guess I had the opposite reaction to the create features for LBP and MNR. While the create tools for LBP and especially LBP2 allow for much more creativity than MNR, they are also far more challenging and time consuming to learn and use compared to MNR.

For instance, I was able to make and play replica real world tracks in MNR in just minutes, where as even a pretty basic level in LBP took me a few days to finish.

That said, both my kids (now 7 & 9) enjoy making levels in LBP and tracks in MNR, but they can definitely make a very entertaining and fun track in MNR much more quickly than a decent level in LBP.

The problem I have with the create / share feature in MNR is that compared to LBP, the options and tools and limited and thus, there isn't a huge variety in community tracks and thus over time it get's boring - certainly when compared to the incredible variety in community LBP levels, of which there seems an endless supply of completely unique levels to play.

When I first heard about LBP Karting my immediate reaction was like Daniel, and that MNR is in many ways just that, so I didn't see the need or interest in this game. However, that changed when I saw that it was the developer of MNR, United Front Games that was working with Media Molecule on this project, which suggested to me that this would not be a simple retooling of MNR.

Having read more about it, and seen some of the images and clips, I'm quite intrigued by the possibilities this game might offer.

If they can combine the huge variety of gameplay and creations tools from LBP with the mechanics of MNR, such that the gameplay and tracks will be far more diverse compared to MNR, then I think they'll have yet another huge hit on their hands.

I certainly am looking forward to seeing how all of this develops over the next few months.

I just heard about the pre-order bonus from GameStop, which not only includes the Kevin Butler Sackboy Costume and Executive Golf Kart as well as the United Front Games General Costume and Arcade Cabinet Kart, but it also includes a Headstart Pack, which unlocks over 900 items. Almost missed this, as the deal ends tomorrow I think?

Not defending the game, but IGN isn't the final say on a game. I mean, they gave WRC 3 a 5 and it's FAR from that.

It doesn't look terrible to me, but I will wait for the inevitable $30 price point in a few weeks.

I think this game is fantastic. A good friend picked it up (I haven't yet) and I've played it for a good few hours and I've really enjoyed it. Much more so than Mario Kart and Modnation Racers. This game has actually taken me away from Halo 4.

You saying this is better than the great Mario kart James? Them is big boots to fill lol.

I fully agree that the WRC review was very poor.
Unfortunately it wasn't only IGN who was guilty of that. Many others did also.

Not so sure about "many", but certainly not the majority. So far the majority of reviews as compiled by Metacritic gave LBP Karting a rating of 80 or higher.

I picked it up, but we are waiting until the weekend to play, but based on the aggregate of reviews (and not any single review) it sounds like a great game.

The many I was referring too was regarding the generally poor WRC reviews. Sorry for confusion.

Well we unwrapped it this afternoon when the kids got home for school, and my first impression has been great. Has all the charm of LBP and far more features and tactics than MNR.

However, I was very disappointed to see that it appears offline the game only supports two player, and not four player like LBP & MNR. I only played a little bit before the kids took over, so maybe I simply overlooked some setting that allows for more than two players offline. If so, and someone here knows how to set it up for four player offline, please let me know, as we would enjoy playing with the kids and obviously their friends would want to play with them like they have been with LBP & MNR. Thanks!

For me personally, yes, I have enjoyed this game more than any recent Mario Kart (though I am very fond of 64 and previous versions) but it is so much more than just a Kart racer. It's a LittleBigPlanet game, but as a Kart racer so it has everything you'd expect from a LBP game but it also has extremely solid karting physics (arcade, of course) that surpass Mario Kart and ModNation racers for fun factor.

All this is my opinion and as such yours may vary. Certainly worth a look if you're a kart racing fan.

OK, so it appears 4 player offline is available, but not in story mode. You can still play the same levels in the story with more than two players offline, but you have to select VS mode for each level.

So far it's a big hit with the kids, and they definitely like it better than Mario Kart and MNR.

Next week I'll test out the 3D performance.

Had this game for a couple of days now. It's great and you should definitely consider buying it if you haven't already. But there are a a few minor disappointing things which aren't that big of a deal in most cases. One is the sticker model, I prefer the one from older LBP games. The sticker model in LBPK makes it hard to apply stickers to a certain piece of clothing and not anywhere else. Same goes for applying stickers to karts.

Second disappointing thing would be not being able to change pop-it colour to match your sackboys color scheme. Again, not so much of a big deal. But lastly none of your stuff is transferred over, not even materials or stickers. But don't worry, you can earn a few LBP2 stickers back in LBPK, and about 3-6 LBP1 stickers.

Oh, the 3D create mode feels weird if you're used to creating levels in 2.5D.

Is the level creating in this game especially deep/difficult? That's the only thing I see myself sinking a lot of time into, other than 4-player races if that's possible.

Sony really should have done a better job marketing this game. I forgot it was even out. That being said, how does this game compare to MNR? I loved MNR so if it's a more polished version of it I definitely will.pick this up.

So does anyone know if 4-person local play is supported?

Finally rented this over the weekend. Only had a chance to play for a few single player levels. I would have tried out the multiplayer but it had the stupid online pass. 👎 What I played was quite fun and similar to Mario Kart in a good way.

Great that you enjoyed the game while you had it. By the way, the online pass was intended to discourage second hand buyers because the game company will not make a profit from their products being re-sold, or re-re-sold.
