Okay guys, here's something a little bit different. It's called a Role Play, and this is how it works.

First of all, everbody signs up for a game. You create a character, join a team and we all go racing. Once a week - probably every Saturday - we'll do a new race. To decide the grid, everyone will post their best lap times. For the race, we all go off and do it in the single player mode (so that people from across different platforms can participate). In the time between races, we each do a race write-up. This can take the form of news articles describing what your driver got up to during the weekend, internal e-mails within the team and even a straight narrative if you feel you're up for it.

As I won't be able to buy (much less play) F1 2010 until November, I'll be taking on the role of The Scruitineer (essentially the dungeon master). This basically means I'm running the game, and throughout the season I'll be throwing out various story arcs for you to explore. You'll have to deal with dodgy sponsors, bitter team rivalries, being released by your team for someone else, injury, a shortage of sponsor funds, team orders controversies and rogue Russian government agents.

In order to join, you'll need to write up a character bio (your character should be just that - a character; you cannot play as an actual driver). It should contain all their vitals and a brief backstory as to how they got to the point where they got into Formula 1. Do not include a team. Teams will be randomly assigned once everyone has joined up (and besides, at some point during the season, people will be changing teams). Remember that this is not so much about who wins the World Championship, but the actual characters. Anyway, here is an example of a character bio:

-------

Hristofor Vodenicharov
Affectionately known as "Bulgarian Chris" up and down the paddock due to his difficult-to-pronounce name, Vodenicharov is, according to the Bulgarian media, "The Hope of the Mother Country!" and is seen as leading the charge in Sofia's push for a Bulgarian Grand Prix. After making an impact in the World Series by Renault, he was rapidly promoted to Formula 1. While he is no doubt fast, he is extremely shy and introverted, and can often be seen socialising with the GP2 and even the GP3 drivers rather than his Formula 1 bretheren. During interviews, it is often difficult to get him to open up about his racing, though a savvy interviewer can often connect with him if they bring up the right subject, usually his love of the bass guitar. He often gets lost when faced with a lot of media attention. Vodenicharov is very stubborn, but self-efficacing; he tends to blame everyone else when he makes a mistake, largely because he knows his self-confidence is fragile, and he can eventually be talked around once he has had time to let his emotions reset themselves. Overall, he has had a difficult time adjusting to Formula 1. Pundits have noted that it took him a year or two longer than most drivers to adjust to Formula Renault, but once he was comfortable, he excelled. Several teams are reported to have their eye on him, but for the moment he is staying with his current team as qualifying is his currently weakest point.

-------

That's about what I'm looking for. It doesn't have to be that detailed, but you should at least find a weakness for your driver (ie qualifying, wet weather, low-downforce circuits, tyre preservation). I don't want somebody who is absolutely bullet-proof or another Lewis Hamilton (and if you write one like that, you're likely to be cast in a Hispania). If you're stuck for names, then I recommend Behind the Name and Behind the Surname. If you're truly stuck, you're welcome to use Vodenicharov, or I can write someone up for you. Once you've put up an entry, I'll contact you via private message with your team and you'll be free to start write-ups. Right now, we're concentrating on the pre-season, so driver moves and team changes (like Lotus parting ways with Cosworth) are the order of the day.

THE CAST

Hopefully we can get some interest going here. We don't explicitly need twenty-four players, though I would like at least one in each team. Any vacancies will just be filled up by additional characters created by me (though they'll be very brief; you'll be free to expand on them as the story goes).

Hmm, this sounds interesting. I think I want to play through campaign first. Then somewhere between the end of my campaign and Nov. 2 I'm game. This first season might be confusing for many(for me at least), but I guess we'll just see how it plays out. Put me on the list.

When are you planning on starting the season?

When do you want our bios by?

And are comedic characters accepted? :)

The first season will begin when everyone is ready. I don't know if you'll be able to take part in a single race separately to a career game, though. If you can't, the delay will be longer.

Comedic characters will be accepted, but it depends on your definition of comedic. If you want somebody like Sue Sylvester from Glee - slightly over-the-top and larger than life - then that's cool. But if you want someone wou would fit in more with the Monty Python crowd, then perhaps not. Your character's personality will come out in their interviews and statements to the press. Someone who is funny is good; someone who is just absolutely absurdist isn't. This isn't be any means serious, but we don't want it playing out like Gilligan's Island reruns.

As for when bios are due, well ... as soon as possible, really. The sooner you post one, the sooner I can assign a team to you. And while it will be random draw, you'll have a better chance of a good team if you post sooner rather than later. Remember, this is largely experimental right now, though I have every intention of following it through. I'm modelling it on narrative role plays I used to run and take part in on another forum, but it's been a while since I've done one and we never actually used a video game as the basis before. But it will happen.

I am interested in taking part in this project of yours Interludes. The thing is, school is rather busy for me right now and I want to get everything planted and under control before I can really take part in this. Although I have the Bio in the works (in my head right now) I would like to join as a third driver/ a driver that joins as a replacement if it is possible. If not, I'll try and try and get it working so that I can join at the start of the season. And the driver I have in mind is former Ravenwest driver; Nathan McKane. (If it can be done.)

That's okay. I have twelve storylines planned out in my head, one for each of the teams. One of these stories involves a regular driver being injured in a practice crash, and a replacement driver stepping in, only for the replacement driver to out-perform the regular. I can arrange it so that you are that replacement driver if you like.

That seems like it could work. Personally (and for Nathan) it won't matter where he ends up landing as said replacement. MAybe he can come in before the Belgian GP (since he knows the track from the IGA and it would fit the story for him doing better than the regular driver) Ok, here is the bio (includes stuff from the GRiD World that I made up in my head, so this Role Play could include many games that somehow converge into one game, with that Game being F1 2010.)

------

Nathan McKane

Once the "Left Wing" of the infamous Ravenwest Motorsports driver duo, Nathan McKane was one of the best drivers to take part in the IGA (International GRiD Association) before the huge series fell before the 2008 season. Him and his teammate, Rick Scott, were the poster-boys of the series with their amazing talent at all disciplines that the series ran. While Rick was better at the more production based disciplines in the series (like Touring Cars and GT1), Nathan was better in the more open-wheel series (like F3 and LMP1). While his dream was to race at the pinnacle of all of racing (Le Mans 24 or F1), his obligations at Ravenwest and the way the team ran forced him not to and only run in predetermined events by RW administration. In the last season of the IGA, his emotions began to get the best with him and he wanted to try and find away to get out of the series in the most logical way possible. While this wasn't the case, the team began losing it's domination with Lexar Motors (the team I use in GRiD) coming out of nowhere and taking it to RW with their driver combo of Josh Morgan (me) and Tony White. By the end of the season, he voided his contract with the series and RW, looking to join a major series that would take him in, although he has no personal sponsors (since the IGA don't allow them).

He went to Japan after the IGA fell and ran in the Formula Nippon for one season, so he could calm down after the high-stress environment that was the IGA. While the first few races where lackluster, he soon found his form and then began to make his presence known, ending the season tied for 4th in the series with Kohei Hirate. He then went back to Europe, and began racing in the Le Mans Series with the Spyker Squadron (to some success, although the racing wasn't his favorite). But after Henry Surtess past away during the F2 event at Brands Hatch, he saw his chance to jump start his possibility to race in F1. He became the driver who took Henry's place in the series, starting with the event at his favorite track Donnington Park. He made his presence known and won both events in the series with help of his much experience in F3. While he was somewhat anonymous the rest of the season, always fighting 1 or 2 points, his dream was beginning to be realized as F1 teams looked at his track history and wanted him as a third driver or test driver if possible (even Ferrari wanted him to drive for then after Massa got injured in Hungary). While that never happened, he got a personal sponsor (Gigawave) and got a drive in the 2010 GP2 series. He still thinks he could make it into F1 in the next 2 years, even if many still don't know the extent of his talent when he was at the IGA. The tracks he knew from the IGA he dominates at (including tracks that were instated for 2007 and 2008, look at the Le Mans Series, and other calendars for similar series), they all seem like a second home for him. While he remains a consistent driver all round, he wants to charge to the front as soon as possible, even if that means doing rather risky overtakes. He tends to overtake at unorthodox places, which tends to damage the car, and he tends to lose a lot of pace with damage (usually a front wing loss). He is still a hot prospect even if there is no one helping him get to the top (and very few know what happened with the IGA).

Took me a while to write, but it was needed (somewhat) to explain how GRiD works with the whole of motorsports. :)

Edit: 300th Post! Woo!

This looks rather cool, Though I've never done ought like this I'd like to give it a go :)
I'll just read the other bio's for inspiration & write one up.
Oh & someone wondered if you can play the career part & do single races aswell, You can.

Taiki Saruwatari (猿渡 大気 Saruwatari Taiki, born Tsukuba, January 15, 1988)
Known affectionately in Japan as "Monkey" due to his surname also because he is known for his imitation of a monkey around the paddock at race events, he is widely a fan favourite in his home country.
Saruwatari started his racing career in Karting in 1996 at the young age of 8. During the next seven years in Karting he began a close rivalry with his friend, fellow Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi, Saruwatari took the title three times in those seven years, one less than Kobayashi. In 2004, he won the ARTA Challenge & as a result got a test drive for ARTA, He then became the reserve driver in ARTA's 2004 & 2005 GT300 campaign. Saruwatari requested a move to the Formula Nippon series stating he felt he would be better suited to single seaters. His start to the year was wonderful as he was running 2nd in the extreme wet conditions of Fuji, Saruwatari had a good first season coming runner-up in the championship, although he wasn't happy with this & stated that it was his first time in a single seater & it would take him a while to get used to the car. Saruwatari showed great potential in extremely wet conditions his control was second to none. By the end of the 2006 season he had found his groove & started to show what he was capable of scoring a victory & a couple podiums. Aguri Suzuki notice this potential & in 2007 he decided to bring Saruwatari up into the recently formed Super Aguri F1 team as a test driver. Suzuki requested that Saruwatari continue to race in the Formula Nippon series to keep him fresh for if he was needed to race for any reason. Saruwatari had a great season getting 3 poles, although he never won a race he still won the championship due to great consistency, He only finished outside the points once. In 2008 when Super Aguri left the Formula 1 season due to financial problems Saruwatari concentrated on Formula Nippon competing for ARTA once again, this year he managed 6 poles, 5 wins & finished again in the points in all but one race (retired) again proving consistency wins championships. In 2009 ARTA pulled out of Formula Nippon & Saruwatari was yet again out of a seat. After looking around for a seat in Formula Nippon & in Formula 1 Saruwatari found himself a seat as a test driver for Toyota's Formula 1 team alongside old rival Kamui Kobayashi. Saruwatari did well as a test driver but unfortunately when Timo Glock got injured it was Kobayashi who got the chance to race at the end of the season. At the end of the 2009 season Saruwatari had once again found himself without a drive as Toyota withdrew from the Formula 1 series. This would make the third team in a row to withdraw from their series while having Saruwatari as a driver. This weighed heavily on his mind for several months untill Aguri Suzuki once again asked him to drive for his ARTA team, this time in GT500. He accepted & once again joined Yuji Ide in the ARTA team.

Recently there has been speculation that the BMW Sauber F1 Team has been looking into Saruwatari as a replacement for Pedro De La Rosa as he has been underperforming compared to his "rookie" team mate Kobayashi. Could this be a new chapter to the friends rivalry?

Hope people found it a decent read, its the first time I've done anything like this so it may be a bit boring

I can't join now but If this lasts a while I will be able to join, probably for f1 11. I'm in an exam year at school:(.

If it's successful, there may be a second season. However, it would also depend on me being able to come up with another twelve storylines. I have some great stuff for this one for now, though. I was actually kind of hoping you (and Peter) would jump on this.

It sounds really good though. I guess I will give it a go.:)
I'll come up with a backround story soon.

Dungeons and Dragons for racing?

blow%20yer%20head%20off.jpg

 :yuck:

I'm not going to be able to compete in this. I have too much schoolwork to focus on. I hope this works out and maybe I'll be back for the second season.

Ok, I really just can't play this so don't count me in as a maybe/3rd driver. It's just not happening. God I hate those exams.:(

This might be fun...

Name: Archibald Hobson
Place of Birth: Surrey,England
D.O.B: 21/10/79

Archibald Hobson first sat in a kart aged 4 when he set the best time ever recorded at the kart track near St Tropez while on a family holiday. Upon the family’s return to England, and despite much pleading from young Archie, the obvious natural talent was ignored as his father sent him to a private boarding school. Archie didn’t see his family, or a race track, for another 14 years.
When his family did finally meet him again they were disappointed to find that instead of being a budding young lawyer, as had been his father’s intention, Archie had a dream to be a racing driver. At first his parents were furious and Archie was thrown out of the house. Archie got a job as a bank Clarke, and with the money he made entered the Caterham Scholarship. Despite being the youngest driver in the championship, aged 19, Archie impressed coming first in 5 of the 9 events and winning the championship. Using some of the contacts he had made through the Scholarship, Archie was offered a drive in the 1999 Formula Vee championship in which he managed to win two races and won an award for best newcomer.
By this stage Archibald’s father was getting desperate for a return on his investment, and was beginning to recognise his son’s talent. Somehow Archie managed to convince him to fund a permanent Formula Ford drive and after a slow start Archie was soon regularly getting podium finishes. After3 years in Formula Fords, Archie progressed up the single seater ladder until he came third place in the 2007 GP2 championship. By now he was beginning to make an impression on F1 teams, but following the advice of his father turned down an offer for third driver at Force India, and instead became a driver in the ‘up and coming’ A1GP series for Team UK.
Archibald Hobson would not hear from another Formula 1 team again until 2010.
Archie’s early experiences have lead to him developing an envious dislike of the new breed of racing driver who have their careers decided before going to high school. He also has a short patience with people who let him down and does not respect authority

If you don't like it, don't play it.

Otherwise, keep your mouth shut.

I was just playing the part of the frustrated parent who can’t understand there children and never wanted to tell them what to do but want to pretend to be interested by asking questions, and this is the kind of respect you show your parents?

I'm afraid I won't be able to participate after all, I just don't want to start than lose all interest when GT5 comes out.
