Hello:

Could someone please confirm that all the cars bearing an "LM" without a year to follow are just the asinine "creations" out of the wonderful mind and repressed desires of Mr. Yamauchi?

Why did they call them "LM"?

My God...

LM in a cars name means .. Le Mans nothing more . If i have understood you right.

Its a GT thing. GT1 didn't have many/any (I don't know of the satus of the Viper GTS-R, Nismo GTR LM, NSX GT2) licensed race cars, so PD created some fantasy race cars and usually tacked on the name "LM Edition" to distinguish the cars from street models (stands for LeMans Edition). In GT3 they were all redone and names changed to LM Race car. For the most part, they are wonderful creations.

My point is:

Why did those guys use the Le Mans name for their fantasy stuff?

Too much of an aspirational issue on their minds...

I guess it could be because Le Mans is a pretty well known racing event which has a whole load of classes, from LMP1 machines like the Audi R10 to GT3 (maybe GT4 too? Not sure) cars which are essentially road cars with roll cages, aerodynamic modifications and loads of stickers. I suppose if PD made, for example, a BMW M5 LM Edition it would be shorthand for BMW M5 GT2, or something like that, but without any legal complications.

Le Mans is more than just the annual event at Circuit de Sarthe - the ALMS is also very popular as are similarly classed events around the world.

I think PD's use of LM simply demonstrates the type of build/class of the cars in question.

LM is used for all real cars that are in the game who have run on 24 hours of lemans somewhere in history.

None of those cars is an invention of his mind...

Well, the cars from which that guy based his pantomime did race at Le Mans.

Now, the actual creations, e.g. Ford GT LM Spec II Test Car???

My God...

Does it have anything to do with the fact that at one point all cars at Le Mans had to be based on a street car. i was reading on one of the cars that it was built specifically as a street car so that the race car could compete at Le Mans but none were ever sold.

no 4th gen Camaro has never ran at Le Mans, yet the is a Camaro LM.

As recently as 12 years ago that was true, when GT1 (later LMPGTP which became today's LMP) class cars were running at LeMans. Now only GT class cars need to be road based.

The AMG CLK-GTR, Porsche 911 GT1, Toyota GT-One, and Nissan R390-GT1 were all sold as road cars briefly for homologation purposes. (although the latter two only had 3 road cars built between the two of them and only one made it out to the public).

Are you sure that the Camaro was not used in the GT class in the 1999-2002 American Le Mans Series?

You were probably reading about the LMGTP class of the late 90s. However, not ALL cars had to be based on road cars. There has always been some sort of a racing prototype class at Le Mans for the last 40 years+, whether it was Group 6, Group C, WSC or the modern LMP.
