My wife has offered to get me a Driving Force wheel for Father's Day.

I've heard great things about the G27 but it's a bit expensive and it's not available off the shelf in any of the stores around here.

I've never used a wheel before, and as I'm pretty far into the GT5 game (level 35 A, 39 B) I thought it might be fun to "start again" using a wheel.

Is the DF wheel good enough to not put me off the game? Even though it's a lot cheaper, I still don't want to waste $170 or so on a gadget that will end up in the basement....

Any advice welcome (preferably before Father's Day!!).

Any of the wheels are worth buying, imo. I couldn't find the G27 new on the shelf but I finally found one used locally. I was about to give up on the G27 and buy the DFGT but most recommended waiting and spending the extra on the G27.

The DFGT is exceptional value and punches far above its weight. It is an excellent starter wheel if you don't want to lash out on a G27. The Force Feedback is very good indeed, and will introduce you to a completely new dimension of the game. The pedals aren't great, but comparable with other wheels in this price range. The wheel however is miles ahead.

The dfgt is great! I own a dfgt and it is a great starter wheel. However 170 is to much for that wheel. The most you shoud pay is 130. That is the normal price. If you catch a sale you can find it cheaper. I got mine for around 90 dollars shipped.

Thanks all.... looks like I'll take up the offer!

iGuitar, I know what you mean about the price, but we can't find it cheaper in the stores here.

What about online? Amazon is alaways a joy to buy from

I bought the DFGT a few months back thinking "I'll give a wheel a try". I was pretty much done with GT5 as it was getting boring with the controller. Now with the wheel I play pretty much everyday. I am very happy with this wheel. The only thing for me was I had to change views when I started using a wheel as the "chase" view just seems wrong now. Plus with a controller I never used manual transmission ... now that is the only way I drive.

Thanks for the feedback Permo.... the DGFT doesn't have a clutch pedal does it? Is it sort of Tiptronic gear changing (like using the DS3)?

I don't like using my CC online.... look at what happened with PSN!!

True. I always feel safe with amazon though. To each his own I guess.

You could try to get those stores to pricematch

Crikey... just looked at amazon.ca (Canada, to avoid import duties) and it's 235 bucks!! Are they in short supply or something???

Looks like amazon is out of stock so they had to use a third party seller (THE GREEN CHOICE). Sometimes those third parties charge way to much. Usually when it says ships and sold by amazon it is the cheapest.

I started my GT5 "career" with the DFGT. Its an excellent wheel. I just recently purchased a G27. Amazingly, I missed the feedback from the DFGT. The DFGT has better support from PD and actually provides a lot more sensation through the wheel. I would definitely recommend the DFGT.

My other recommendations would be to start with the feedback at a low number(1 or 2), and to add an 18" bungee cord around the back of the brake pedal. The pedals are a bit soft, but with the bungee mod it provides a good progressive feel.

Enjoy your wheel! It makes a drastic difference in the game play.

My first wheel since PS1, because that wheel was so bad I'd never considered another one.
It's fantastic. I haven't used more expensive wheels, but after a small amount of practice you'll be much faster and more consistent.

It is a great wheel for the price, no doubt about that.

But after driving approximately 25000KM with mine it is starting to fall apart, the wheel itself is now a bit off center when driving in a straight line, and I have had to strain down the brake pedal with a big rubber band so that it will release the brake 100% again after breaking, otherwise it will still be about 10% applied.

But with the rubber band it is defiantly still drivable, as the off center problem only seems to be a visual thing because the feel of the wheel is still the same.

Just bought one - what's happening with the braking? Can't seem to keep cars in a straight line when stopping from high speed.

Are you using ABS?

If not, then you're probably locking up your tires, try to be more gentle on the brake pedal.

The problems that I have found with the DFGT are with the sequential shifter for example when you change down and are a bit too vigorous the shifter will click back up into the gear that you were in, also the brake pedal is just too spongy however if you try the bungee cord mod: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Urlmz9ywns it should solve the problem, hope this helps 👍

Totally agree with the sequencial shifter. I will add that the wheel itself is not very confortable because of holes in the back. A bigger wheel would be perfect.

Except these minor discomforts, at the price, this is a great wheel...
