Hey Guys..

I was debating whether to put this thread in the steering wheel section but I though it was more about how to drive rather than the wheel its self.

So I got my self a G25, driving around, I have all aids off, so no TC or ASM. I tend to get slightly out of line and try to correct, but all that happens is I get the snap back effect and end up spinning around.

I am a nice 14 seconds slower that I am with a controller but thats with 1 or even 2 crashes per lep.

So my questions are:

1. As I am a beginner shall I put ASM and TC on?

2. If I leave them off what is the best way to drive with a wheel? I have been using a controller since GT1 days.

generally I don't want my G25 investment to go to waste, so any tips would be great so I can use it all the time.

It is quite a change to what you have been used to for all these game racing years, I personally don't recommend turning on aids, IMO the best tip really is

Practice
Practice
Practice

This is the advice I gave to my nephew when he made the jump to a wheel, he had trouble but now never looks back. Actually at the moment he is re-training himself to using a clutch and H shifter (he is 15 and never driven a manual in real life so it's a larger adjustment).

What I did when I got my wheel was to drive on standar physics until you are in control of the car, then change to the professional physics. Always all the aids off.

Might be coincidence, might be not, however!!

I just put my 22" LCD on my PS3, put it like only 1 meter in front of me on a table, went to the camera where you can't see the car.

Did a few laps and went well for some weird reason, I even beat my time with the controller, switched back over to my TV and went even faster.

It appears I can drive very well and what not when the screen is right in front of me, pick the corners better, I soon learn the car and track and then go well on my big LCD.

I understand that at first you didn`t drive with the TV in front of you, playing that way to any game has to be difficult, even more on driving games.

It is hard to drive with the outside view, bumber and cockpit views are the best for driving with a wheel.

The best way to learn how to use a wheel is to do the licenses, and do what Viper said.

Viper pretty much sums it up, there are no shortcuts its just practice, try to be smooth with minimal input on the steering and you'll soon start getting a feel for it 👍.

How much are you steering? It is trickier to recover from a tailslide using the wheel, but it sounds like you're steering too much.

Be smooth with it too like these 2 great drivers....

But don't do this...

That first guy is as smooth as a baby's bottom, seriously.

Anyhow, I am not as bad as the last guy. When i get in to it more next week will have to do some time comparisons with a few members if i can, see how I am going.

I'll get my girl friend to film me racing, see how I look, might post it if it ain't to embarrassing.

I feel I am not as smooth as the first guy, but fairly close to the second, maybe a tad worse, but not like the last, lol.

I'm the first guy. :D

The other two are VEXD. :D He's playing in the Hyundai rally car at the Ice Arena in the last one, so that is not indicative of his normal driving. He's not quite as smooth as me, but he is faster.

:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

You guys are gods.

If I did the Ice Arena I would be worse than the last guy, lol.

Will still try get a video tomorrow. Might do it of the GT:HD track, I love it :)

I see no gear shift
Those are DFPs with the gear lever attached to the side of the wheel. Vexd uses his all the time. They are in 900 degree mode though same as G25.

All I can say is, practice, practice and practice! I am 16 and never driven a car in real life.

At first, if the car loosed grip, I would spin out, but now I can fix that, how? By practicing! Just drive around in Arcade mode for a few hours and practice.

I don't drive with my wheel so often, but I am only 1 sec behind or so with a wheel now.

Wow, that guy on the first video is so smooth :)
Seriously, the guy in the last movie should never be allowed to drive a real car.

I've already explained what was going on there. The 2nd and 3rd videos are the same guy.

Wow, daan. You're a really smooth driver. 👍
I've only seen shots of you playing, but never vids. Very nice driving indeed.

I've never driven with a wheel before, will do so in a very short while as the G25 has just dropped in price here (from €247 to €197), so I'll start GT5P on a wheel straight away, so I get used to it faster.

1) Leave the driving aids OFF. As it will force you to develope some very nice car handling skills. And in several scenarios it will give you an advantage over others using the assist. (Also pays off in the real world driving too)

2) I use the the clutch with every car that allows it in GT5P. Hoever, unlike my personal car with a six speed manual when I'm accelerating as fast as possible in a straight line - my right foot fully depresses the gas pedal during gear shifts. (but not in the real world - and/or not with my car :dopey: )

3) Keep driving dude, keep driving.👍

This is a perfect example of what I've been saying for a long time. :sly:

"Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast", Way to go Daan!

Driving is more like dancing with the car, not boxing with it. Remember, there are many things that a game can't simulate, however all the theories apply to real life driving/racing can be applied to driving/racing in a game.
