Ralf Schumacher has claimed he is one top of the top three drivers in Formula 1 alongside Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen.

The 31-year-old German starts his 11th F1 season in Melbourne next week and has six grand prix wins to his name.

However despite not having won a race since the 2003 French Grand Prix, the Toyota driver is convinced that he should be classed in the same bracket as the sport’s recognised top two.

“You always depend on your car as a driver,” he told Germany’s Bild newspaper.

“In a Minardi for example, my brother would not have won a world title.

“I definitely count myself among the strongest three drivers.

“Clearly Alonso and Raikkonen are fast – but I must hide behind nobody.

“If I was not convinced, I would not be in Formula 1 any more.”

Schumacher’s chances of returning to the winner's circle in the early part of 2007 look slim, since Toyota has struggled for pace alongside its rivals in pre-season group testing.

But the German, in his third year with the Cologne-based squad, remains confident that the Japanese car giant is still on course to achieve its F1 ambitions – with a first win still not out of the question for this season.

“We must work to improve,” he said.

“I know that we are on the right path – the investment will bear fruit some time.

“I hope still in 2007.

“I intend to win the first race for Toyota.

“Toyota is and remains the team of the future," he added.

"This company, all the workers have only one goal – to lead Toyota to the top.

“The Formula 1 title is only a question of time."

Just made me giggle LOL

Himself, apparently.

Hey, Ralph! It's always great to start off the new season, which is one week away, with delusions of grandeur. But you'll come through once you hit that wall.

(BTW, nobody's cheering for you.)

Ralf responds to critics who suggest that he is not in 'the top three'...

Theres only one phrase that can be used for this:

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

****

“You always depend on your car as a driver,” he told Germany’s Bild newspaper.

“In a Minardi for example, my brother would not have won a world title.

so basically what hes saying is "put me in a better car and i will be in the top 3" I guess what he's really trying to say is that he cannot depend on his toyota

"In one of my brother's Ferraris, for example, I still would not have won a world title."

Funny.

But I disagree, Ralf probably could have won a world title if he had the best car in the field. As long as he didn’t have a really great team mate. He’s reasonably quick, and in the right car that could translate into results.

But he’s still not one of the top three drivers currently racing.

Ah, give the man a break. I had the pleasure of meeting him once and, although he may not be the most talented driver, he was a thoroughly nice bloke with his feet firmly on the ground.

Nah he just thinks that now his brothers gone he automatically gets to be a top three driver. Sorry Ralf, nice bloke but dream on

If he's a top-three driver, the question begs to be asked: why isn't he driving for a top-three team? Toyota are probably the most half-baked effort in the World Championship; Williams at least tried last year. Toyota are behind McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, Honda, BMW and probably the new Williams outift. If Ralf were as good as he claims, he'd be winning races as opposed to scraping a single podium. It's the driver that makes the car, not the car that makes the driver.

I think he proved that he will not be among the top three in his little quotes. He said that you have to depend on your car. He really has nothing to depend on, so I don't see how he can do decently.

What do I say to Toyota? Give some of that budget to a backmarker (Spyker, STR). I'm sure they can make excellent use of that money.

Right, with the RB chassis, new engine and all.

I do think Toyota probably has the worst performance per dollar, and I wonder what a smaller budget would do.

I've got the latest issue of F1 Racing here (don't know what you all think of it), and it breaks down each team's 2006 budget and compares the amount they spent with the number of points they earned. It claims Toyota spent the most of any team last year, racking up $418.50 million and won just 35 points, which comes in a $11.96 million per point. The next-biggest spender was Ferrari, who spent $406.50 million and won 201 points, costing 'just' $2.02 million peer point. The most efficient were Renault, spending $1.57 million for each point they won. The team Toyota probably compares themselves with the most would be Honda, who spent $380.50 million in 2006 and won 86 points, coming in at $4.42 million per point, almost three times more efficient than Toyota.

I'll just post all of them (including the ones I've already done). All dollar figures are in millions.

Toyota
Spent: $418.50
Points: 35
Cost per point: $11.96

Ferrari
Spent: $406.50
Points: 201
Cost per point: $2.02

McLaren
Spent: $402.00
Points: 110
Cost per point: $3.65

Honda
Spent: $380.50
Points: 86
Cost per point: $4.42

BMW-Sauber
Spent: $355.00
Points: 36
Cost per point: $9.86

Renault
Spent: $324.00
Points: 206
Cost per point: $1.57

Red Bull
Spent: $252.00
Points: 16
Cost per point: $15.75

Williams
Spent: $195.50
Points: 11
Cost per point: $17.77

Midland/Spyker MF1
Spent: $120.00
Points: 0
Cost per point: n/a

Scuderia Toro Rosso
Spent: $75.00
Points: 1
Cost per point: $75.00

Super Aguri
Spent: $57.00
Points: 0
Cost per point: n/a

Given the difference between budgets, this is a little misleading. Toro Rosso spent seventy-five million dollars for a single point, but Toyota had a budget five and a half times greater than the junior Red Bull squadron. If the statistics are evened out as the magazine did - although they didn't specify all of them and I can't remember how to right now - then Toyota have the worst performance for the year, with Honda being one of, if not the, best.

1. I don't think he really said that...Probably some magazine crap which tries to pull something out of their ass...

2. Just a few days ago, he said the curent Toyota sucked and that they only could drive in front of Spyker and Super Aguri

and 3. He's gonna get fired soon, he will be a retarted person, Toyota will leave F1 and kick some ass in Le Mans with their new GT-One and Trulli will be looking for a seat at STR...

There you have it 👍

and 3. He's gonna get fired soon, he will be a retarted person, Toyota will leave F1 and kick some ass in Le Mans with their new GT-One and Trulli will be looking for a seat at STR...

Nah, Coulthard will have a bad 2007 season and retire then Trulli wil race with Webber at RBR:p

I know that but what I was saying is that he will not stay very long at Spyker either since he's just a moron who moves from team to team, asking hufge amounts of money just to create a car...

Something is misleading here. Ralf is in top 3 salary wise which consists of Ralf (25m), Kimi (51m) and Alonso (22m). I somehow doubt he said he's in top three drivers in terms of performance. He's not that much of an idiot. Or maybe he is? :dunce:
