"Bob Stein has just posted that the next version Windows, currently codenamed 'Longhorn', will in fact be named Windows Vista.

There is currently no confirmation or announcement from Microsoft on this, but as I am in Seattle meeting some people from Microsoft at the moment I will be asking around...

Update: Microsoft has just posted their 6AM PST Press Release confirming that Windows: Codename Longhorn will be called Windows Vista. Microsoft has also launched their official "Windows Vista" web page. Announced on the page: "Beta 1, targeted at developers and IT professionals, will be available by August 3rd 2005".

Update: Steven Bink along with numerous other Windows enthusiast site admins have suggested we nickname Vista "WinVi". "Vi is the first two letters of Vista, and Windows Vista is Windows NT 6.0. In Roman Numerals VI is the number six." ActiveWin is reporting that the official tagline for WinVi is "Clear, Confident, Connected: Bringing clarity to your world."

You can view the press release here (requires WMP10) and they've even already released logos for it here.

Thoughts?

I guess so. And keeping the name "longhorn" wouldn't have been very clever either.
One of the keys to naming an operating system (or any piece of software for that matter) is that it can be pronouncable by a wide array of people. People that speak English as a second or third language might have trouble pronouncing "Longhorn" whereas "Vista" is somewhat easier to pronounce.

Then they can outsource tech support to India.

I like Longhorn better, but maybe they should've named it XP 2.0 or just stick to the old format, Windows 2006.

"Asta la Vista, Baby."

"Do you use Vista or Macstercard?"

!!!

I remember where i've heard vista before now - isn't a company called buena vista something to do with films?

They should just call it Windows 6. It's like, contemporary, dude.

yay for me being a beta tester. Longhorn was awesome, but it was an insane resource hog.

That machine ran like Windows XP on a Pentium 233MHz. I hope they fix the laggyness of the OS.

That desktop is nice! obviously not the finished article but its smart! so does anyone know what the name will definately be vista? and when exactly will it be released ?

It will definately be called Vista, the current build is going to be sent to beta testers in august and it is expected out early-mid 2006.

Cheers - Will it work for 32 bit processors? i heard someone mention it will be for 64 bit processors??

the name sucks, longhorn sounds better.
i'm happy with xp, so i'm not interested in vista

Its built only for 64bit because it can handle more memory.

Plus the amount of memory it can handle will not work on 32bit CPU's.

Plus more and more vid games on PC will be using 64bit in the future, which means less games in about 3-4 years will be made for 32bit.

By 6-8 years time I could see 64bit PC games, and by 4-5 years time I could see news coming out of 128bit CPU's. In other terms 70%/80% of people could be upgrading to 64bit.

Please, do your research before you post. :)

Q: Will Windows Vista be a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system?
A: Windows Vista will ship in both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions. Microsoft expects the computer buying public to switch to x64 during Vista's lifetime. There will not be an Itanium version of Windows Vista.
