But is it meant to be green?

Luminous green, infact.

My mum just called me into the kitchen to look at something, so i did. When i got there, she points out that out biggest gas burner on our hob, is burning what looks to be green gas.

Now, WTF is going on?

We had a small fire the other day, which involved my mum putting a plastic bowl on one of the hobs, and not realising it was turned on. A few minutes later, the smoke alarm goes off, and we see flames coming from the hob.

We put that out and cleared it up, and all was well again. It wasn't on the same burner as the one glowing green, though.

If you look under the pan, you can see green and blue flames. Weird, huh?

There could be leakage into the pipe , a calcium deposit perhaps could be a contaminant , does her egg boil quicker ? then the flame @ the hob is hotter , int vid you also have a quite large flame licking the pot there , going to town on the old GAS are we? [TRANS] i have'nt a clue , waffle waffles , pm Famine [/TRANS]

We recon some plastic might have got onto it, as it's going weird colours on top now it's off.

Natural gas is colorless and the main component, methane, is odorless. They add sulfur dioxide to it so that you can smell it if there is a leak (smells like rotten eggs). If the flame is burning green instead of blue, that means that the flame is cooler, and would suggest that there is not enough gas coming through to your burner. If there is indeed a leak in your line, that definately needs to be fixed, unless you have a subconscious urge to collect the insurance money on your house. Leak or not, if the stove is suddenly doing something different than before, it needs to be checked out.
 
Yeah, the funny thing is, we had a pan on a burner behind it which was going fine. Normal flame, so escaping around the side.


We'll definately get this checked out - my brother is a plumber, so that shouldn't be hard.

Mmmmm... barium...

(Barium salts burn green).

There's probably some deposit on the hob, burning off.
 
There's no chance that that might be in either microwave safe plastic bowls, or baked beans, is there?
 
Seems weird to brun green. If it is plastic burning you should definetley get it checked out. Plastic gives off some really bad fumes.

Electric sucks. Ther's the whole having to leave the pan on the hob and non of the flamboyant dhef actions.

And don't i just know it. Our house stank of it for a day.
 
Who cares why it's green? Just enjoy it being green. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a green flame, you know.

I forgot to add, for cooking.

And think, you guys can't even have a cup of tea when the power goes out :sly: Gas maked a nice sound aswell :D
 
I've lived without eletricity for a couple of days.... that makes you THANKFUL for a gas burner... or charcoal.

Maybe some of that plastic got into that burner?
 
I know that if you heat copper for a few seconds it soon turns to a green flame.
