I'm looking to buy a new tv. My budget is $1000 max. My only real requirements are at least 40" screen and 1080p. I do not care about aesthetics, only picture quality and feature set. It will mainly be used for PS3 gaming/blu ray watching. I would also like it to double as my pc monitor, so I will need at least 2 hdmi ports. Any suggestions?

It would appear that I have 24 posts over the last few years either about a Vizio I've purchased or suggested to others.

Make that 25. :p

Are you looking only for a 40", up to a 40" or at least a 40"?

Just picked up a Samsung LN40C630. It's beautiful (both aesthetically and picture quality-wise). If you will have it in a room with no windows or anything you could get the glossy LN40C650 which supposedly looks a lot better, but is glarey. You can find them for less than $700 after Bing Cashback if you can take delivery of it. I had to bend over and pay $860 after tax for it at a B&M store since I don't want the delivery folk to leave an $800 TV on my porch until I get home.

also, you pretty much are forced to put it until game mode if you're going to play a game, there is too much input lag otherwise.

I've a 42" 1080p Vizio I got a couple years back that I am quite happy with as well, so toss down another "pro Vizio" vote.

Can't really go past the Sony Bravia EX400 or EX500 series LCD's, very solid all round TV's that are hard to fault in any one area.

Did you thought about a 3d tv. Samsung has one for 1000 bucks 40".
Sonys 3d 40" will be also around a 1000 bucks.

Futur proof

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have mentioned in my first post that I'm looking for at least a 40" screen. I'll change that. Anyone else have any suggestions? So far looks like Vizio isn't a bad choice...

Way back when I had the same requirements as you I would've recommended a V series BRAVIA. I ultimately went for the KDL-40Z4100 because of the Motion-Flow feature, which is a lot more common now, in some cases at 240Hz instead of 120. Although I'm a Sony guy mostly, I have to admit the Vizios look quite stunning.

For about $1000 you could easily find a 40" 1080p Plasma from Panasonic.

Vastly superior image quality compared to a comparable (price, size) LCD.

Like this:

If not Plasma, there are still a ton of deals on LCDs now, because of the "3D transition."

As with all TVs though. Read up on calibrating it. Because just about every TV you purchase is wrong out of the box.
