Looking for car for £1500-£2k

Right, just got a new job with an insurance firm doing their IT. Probably will get insurance through them, but at the moment I have had some great quotes from Tesco's. Its a first car, but I have been driving before, took test 6 years ago failed and now I need to drive. Money is not a problem as I will be receiving a large compensation payout soon but I like any car with a quote of £1500 a year ~

The cars ive looked at are:

1.6 Ford Puma - £1,640.27 insurance + £2000 for car = £3640
2.0 Ford Focus Zetec ESP - £1,403.14 + £2000 = £3640
MG ZR 1.4 - £1,533.13 + £2000 = £3500
Mazda Mx-5 (90Bhp) - £1620.13 + £2000 = £3600
Toyota Celica (140)1.8 - £1735.67 + £2000 = £3700
VW Golf GTI 1.8 (125) - £1519.43 + £2000 = £3520


Not a bad selection, Ive looked at Alfa Romeo's, Fiats and other cars but these are what Im looking at, but I am open to suggestions.
 
Nope, but as i said i Have been driving before, so its mainly the money issue.

Driving of private land etc, never needed a licence until now. The reason I failed was because of someone else's fault, they cut me up on a motorway with a trailer and I "didnt" look in my mirror when i broke (yeah right but thats ancient history). Im doing my crash course in about 2 weeks when I get paid first.

The money for a car and insurance is irrelevant. My compensation is about £10k and I am starting a new job at £17k a year Monday. The firm specialises in insurance of EVERYTHING. They are the only insurers of the Bugatti Veyron in the UK. They do everything from normal cars to prestiege cars to boats and buildings. There is staff discount but I dont have my contract yet, will come in post tomorrow, but suffice to say all Im after is opinion of the cars I have laid out. Reliability, owners opinions etc.

That is true, you cannot drive on the motorways while learning, unless you are in a specific learning car suitable for driving on the motorways (something about not having the L stuff on the roof of the car).
 
better back away from the hatches, and save yourself a few nicker.
 
Yeah can't drive on a motorway until you pass, I know all this I'm 26. I realize most of these had been suggested by me before, but that was a fair amount of time ago and opinions shift.

Why stay away from hatches? I was planning on driving a 1.4 festa for a while. I have to drive from Sittingbourne to Whistable everyday, which is 14 miles, nothing really. I was gonna put £3000 in an ISA for a year, build some NCB then using the company insurance discount get myself something like an old GSR VI or an AE86.

Seriously don't know what to do, when insurance for a 1.4 focus zetec is almost the same as a 2.0ltr! Those figures quotes are directly lifted from confused, saying I am a brand new driver.
 
Badman: yes, i confirmed the Hatch=monstrously high insurance rates when I started a thread asking how the British Take on car insurance works.
 
ah yes, now i totally agree that Insurance for men in the UK is a total load of BS. Considering that I am now 26, and will have a licence, and will have a pass plus for motorway driving as well to drop some of the insurance.

The cars I have looked at are EQUAL to insure as a 1.2 ford fiesta, or a corsa by about £200~ a year.

A 1.6 ltr Ford focus zetec is what I am looking at now, its about £1000 to insure, maybe less with pass plus or with my sister on it as well, that way I can put £2-3000 in an ISA for a year, get a year of NCB and bobs your mothers brother Ill get a 325 or Focus ST/RS, or may even rebuild an RS turbo escort mkVI!
