Looking into getting first DLSR need advice ASAP

Good morning guys, I'm looking into jumping ship from the point and shoot to the DSLR range of cameras.

First and foremost there are a couple of things that I know I "want".

-Canon: due to lens selection
-Durability: Im a stickler for quality build - the magnesium construction in particular of the higher end models.
-I dont need video at all.

Locally there is a gentlemen on craigslist who is selling a Canon 50D. He is including the following along with the body.

Canon 18-55mm lens with image stabilization
HD 2x telephoto lens
HD 0.45x wide angle lens with Macro attachment
8GB Flash hard drive card
Three batteries w/ charger
Hard transport case
Original box + manuals

The camera is in mint condition and has been used by himself (teacher) to shoot family events and school sporting events.

He is looking for $800 cash.

Is there anything I should look for when purchasing a used mid-range DSLR? LIke I said, I am new to the DSLR world and have never purchased anything of "value" used.

I know I could jump ship and get a new t3i for around the same price with a larger sensor, video; however, I would lose auto-focus features as well as overall speed. Furthermore, the newly released 60D seems like an overall quality downgrade from the 50D. The 50D shoots faster and has a superior build.

Any and all suggestions would be great. I might be making this purchase tonight so any advice would be appreciated.

Lastly, can anyone recommend any good first time users DSLR books or online resources such as classes etc etc? I'm traveling to Europe at the end of the summer for a 12 day cruise and would like to maximize my experience with my camera. I have all the time in the world for the next 10 weeks to pick up tips/practice along the way.

There are a lot more people who know more than me.
But to really know the value of your craiglist ad, it would be great to know what lenses he offers with the cam.

as for the 50D. It's a good camera especially for beginners.

But I am always suspicious with used goods, especially for that price rage, but that is your shot.
