I'm trying to find something in the sub $500 range. I'm terrible with with carpentry and don't have welding materials, so building my own isn't a likely proposition. The reason I'm looking at a seat is my current solution — a computer laptop desk (kind of looks like a hospital tray basically) — is killing my knees.

I also want to avoid the style of having a bar between your legs.

Other considerations: I don't need a monitor stand, I have a 40" Samsung 1080p TV about three feet off the ground on a TV stand, I currently have a Driving Force Pro, but may upgrade in the future to the G27 (a clutch and real shifter would be nice), and I live in a rural area of Minnesota, so it's unlikely they'll be a pick-up solution available.

I've seen video reviews on some of them, but wanted a real world perspective.

So, my current contenders are:

And this [EDIT] rSeat Evo that is a bit out of my price range.

I guess my questions are between those, does anyone have a recommendation? Is the center pole in some of the other models a real problem for people or am I making too much of it? Does anyone have a modular solution that even a simpleton with tools could do-it-himself?

Rseat gets my vote. I think it's worth the money and it looks good. I don't like center poles either.

I hated the center pole.
For the money you're spending, I'd get the Obutto (and I did). But not before I check this one out.

Cool, I had done a search in my area, but came up with zilch. I'll call the guy and ask about it. Doesn't look like quite what I want, but can't hurt to call and ask about it.

You like the Obutto pretty well?

^It works for me/my equipment. Search the webz to see if DFPro would mount okay.

My vote would be the Obuuto. I like mine a lot and it comes with a lot of extras (monitor mount, shifter mount, keyboard table) its really good bang for the buck.

So, I elected to go a bit of a different route. I'm going to stick with my awesome office chair, decided to bite on the $209 G27 wheel on Amazon and ended up getting the http://www.granstand.com/ stand and shifter mount. It's nice that I'll be able to add a seat later on if I want to.

I realize you can make 80/20 constructs yourself, but I don't have pipe tools or knowhow. Figure the $300 shipped is a good price for the right.

Haven't decided if I want to sell my Driving Force GT or keep it for when friends are over on it's crappy stand.

Okay, I ended up canceling my Granstand and getting an rSeat GTR v2 and the Logitech G27. The Granstand looks to be a good product, but that GTR V2 was only $175 (including shipping) more, and it seemed like a much better overall deal. I'm hoping the G27 is a huge step up from the Driving Force GT, everyone says it is. But, if not, I'll just return that and then figure out a way to mount the DFGT to this stand (which I'm assuming should be simple provided the hooks line up). Either way, this looks like it'll be much easier on my knees.

Thanks all for the help!

And, I'll post pics of my setup once it's all ready to go.

Everything is bought and assembled. After figuring out the best seating situation, this thing plays like a dream.

I play GT5 sporadically online, and honestly have a tough time winning (lots of second places and lots of lasts depending on the room -- also I have a penchant for picking cars based on what I like vs. PP value/best chance to win the race), especially in rallies. Last night, I won my first against some pretty good competition in a shuffle race.

Thanks everyone for the awesome advice!

Completely irrelevant, I know, but I'm planning an 80/20 (it's actually FlexLink, but it's the same thing) cockpit build for myself at the moment. As far as I'm aware all you really need is a drill, a hacksaw, screws, a few brackets and time, and I suppose a few vices and clamps or whatever. I'm hoping it'll be more straightforward than the model I made of it, anyway.
