HI everyone, I'm off to calgary in 3 weeks by the looks of it. We are going to be doing alot of road travelling to different areas of Alberta.

Are there any places I should go check out?

Any motorsport venues / monuments or museums?

I am gutted that GV's museum is in berthierville, quebec, manymanymany miles from where I am going!

cheers for any tips :)

There isn't a whole lot in Alberta. There's a decent sized shopping mall in Edmonton that has a few stores. If I remember, all of the exits are numbered so that you can figure out where you came in. If you can't, and get stranded, there's a hotel in there, too. I'm sure Calgary has some stuff, but I haven't spent more than a couple hours there. If you head west, the Rocky Mountains aren't too far away. Banff is a ski resort town that's fun to poke around for a bit.

Decent sized? Thats an understatement. It is, or atleast was, the largest in the world with a waterpark, indoor rollercoaster, and enough stores to supply you with anything you could ever need.

There really isn't much in Alberta though, its mountains on one side and flat land every where else. If your into dinosaurs, there is an amazing dinosaur museum/dig site that you can visit with skeletons still poking out of the rock. If your a history buff, there is the Cypress hills which is an old battle ground and fort which was used to help wipe out the native americans I believe. Unfortuantly you are going to miss the Calgary stampede, but you could still visit many events like (smaller scale, as in, much smaller) that happen throught out. Unfortuantly there really isn't much going on in the summer as its mainly a farming province, which means everyone is too busy in their combines to do anything worth while during the summer.

Don't know if you have this kind of money, or the interest, but there's a lot of great golf around Banff as well.

It is.
I can't recall where, but it is. Somewhere in south or central Alberta.

If you're going to be in Calgary, you might as well go to:

-Drumheller - South of Calgary. The fossil site that SRV mentioned. Badlands landscape makes for neat hiking, and there is the museum there as well.

-West Edmonton Mall - Edmonton - (Formerly) The biggest mall in the world. Includes a hotel, waterpark, indoor theme park including go-karts and a rollercoaster. Mini-golf as well.

-Fort Edmonton Park - Edmonton - The original Edmonton settlement from the 1800's - Still preserved and operated as a historical site. Staff play the part, too.

-Reynolds Alberta Museum - Wetaskiwin (My hometown) - Museum displaying antique cars (primarily) and farm equipment from the turn of the century to the 1940's and 50's. Special exhibits vary, not sure what's on now. Adjacent to RAM is an aviation museum showcasing antique and semi-modern aircraft, both civilian and military, most of which are still airworthy. During the summer months, you can also go for a ride in two restored vintage biplanes. It's about 20 minutes off Highway 2, which is the main connector between Edmonton and Calgary, and is about 35 minutes south of Edmonton. Would highly reccomend it if you're going to be anywhere near Edmonton. There is also a small paved oval track (called Edmonton Raceway) that holds races on the weekends a few minutes from the museum. Additionally, there is Castrol Raceway outside of Edmonton - 1/4 mile dragstrip, clay oval track, motocross track, and more.

That's the big ones off the top of my head, but there's lots more I'm probably not remembering. After all, I moved away from Alberta almost seven years ago.

"West Edmonton Mall (WEM), located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is the largest shopping mall in North America and third largest in the world. It was the worlds largest mall for a 23 year period from 1981 until 2004." - from here.

Oh Kyle how I enjoy you.

Okay, the mall in Edmonton is kind of big. But only two Hudson's Bay Company department stores, and only one underwater adventure? Puh-lease. I've seen better selection at the local farmer's market. And that mini-golf course is pathetic. I finished 9 under par. The challenge was barely worth the dooney.

Well, I Live In Calgary, and have my entire life, so I do know the city pretty well. And Id say there is a fair bit here to keep you entertained depending on what you like to do.

And In my opinion, West Edmonton Mall is overrated, unless you really LOVE to shop or really enjoy waterparks. As far as thrill rides, I'm getting my fix at the stampede right now (too bad you'll miss it as it ends this sunday) but if thats your thing you can always head to Calaway Park right here in calgary

As far as motorsport venues go, check out Race City Speedway:

And check out whats going on.

If you like animals, you can always check out the Calgary Zoo. Home to 1001 animals (does not include individual fishes or insects) and 290 different species. It is the second largest zoo in Canada. The Calgary Zoo's facilities are considered to be world-class. The featured animal exhibits are organized by geographic region in large, realistic, and natural enclosures.
